THE USE OF VOCALIZATION SIGNALS TO ESTIMATE THE LEVEL OF PAIN IN PIGLETS REA
Cordeiro,Alexandra F. da S.; Nääs,Irenilza de A.; Baracho,Marta dos S.; Jacob,Flávia G.; Moura,Daniella J. de.
ABSTRACT Pain is considered a condition that most affect the welfare of animals and its measurement is seen as a difficult task. This research aimed to determine the level of pain in pigs by their vocalization. It was recorded the vocalizations of 20 male piglets under normal circumstances (I), marking by Australian method (II), tail trimming management (III), and castration (IV). A unidirectional microphone and a digital recorder were used to record the sound signals. The results suggested that Pitch frequency (Hz), the maximum amplitude (Pa), and intensity (dB) increased from pain-free pigs to the marking procedure; and from marking to both tail trimming and castration The tail trimming and castration vocal response did not differ.

Using data mining to identify factors that influence the degree of leg injuries in broilers REA
Cordeiro,Alexandra F. da S.; Baracho,Marta dos S.; Nääs,Irenilza de A.; Nascimento,Guilherme R. do.
Locomotor problems prevent the bird to move freely, jeopardizing the welfare and productivity, besides generating injuries on the legs of chickens. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of age, use of vitamin D, the asymmetry of limbs and gait score, the degree of leg injuries in broilers, using data mining. The analysis was performed on a data set obtained from a field experiment in which it was used two groups of birds with 30 birds each, a control group and one treated with vitamin D. It was evaluated the gait score, the asymmetry between the right and left toes, and the degree of leg injuries. The Weka ® software was used in data mining. In particular, C4.5 algorithm (also known as J48 in Weka environment) was used for the...

Energy expenditure in vocalizations of pigs under stress REA
Cordeiro,Alexandra F. da S.; Naas,Irenilza A.; Medeiros,Brenda B.; Maia,Ana Paula de A.; Pereira,Erica M..
Modern swine production faces many challenges nowadays, among which are productivity growth, meat quality improvement, decrease of environmental damage and reduction of cost production. Pigs spend energy to vocalizing, especially when they undergo stress. The waste of energy can increase the cost of production and lead to greater environmental damage. The goal of this study was to estimate the energy spent by pigs under the stress of castration and its effect on the animals' weight gain. Two groups of ten animals each were castrated, being one group with local anesthetic and the other without anesthetic. The piglets' vocalizations were recorded during different stages of the neutering process and then estimated of the amount of energy emitted during each...

Efficiency of distinct data mining algorithms for classifying stress level in piglets from their vocalization REA
Cordeiro,Alexandra F. da S.; Nääs,Irenilza de A.; Oliveira,Stanley R. de M.; Violaro,Fabio; Almeida,Andréia C. M. de.
Among the challenges of pig farming in today's competitive market, there is factor of the product traceability that ensures, among many points, animal welfare. Vocalization is a valuable tool to identify situations of stress in pigs, and it can be used in welfare records for traceability. The objective of this work was to identify stress in piglets using vocalization, calling this stress on three levels: no stress, moderate stress, and acute stress. An experiment was conducted on a commercial farm in the municipality of Holambra, São Paulo State , where vocalizations of twenty piglets were recorded during the castration procedure, and separated into two groups: without anesthesia and local anesthesia with lidocaine base. For the recording of acoustic...
