A total of 807 Dipturus chilensis specimens (448 males and 359 females) caught in research cruises performed by the National Institute for Fisheries Research and Development (INIDEP) during 2011 and 2012 were analyzed. The cruises were carried out between (34°S-48°S) and 50-313 m depth. Mean size at first maturity (TL50) was estimated at 780 mm and 908 mm TL for males and females, respectively, values that represented about 80% of the respective maximum total length observed. Besides, latitudinal differences in sexual maturity estimates were detected. The total number of 4-7 reproductive seasons and 42-52 follicles or individuals of maximum annual potential fecundity estimated in this paper allow to suggest that each female would produce less than 300 eggs...

The life history of Chondrichthyans results in a low capacity to recover from the fishery human impact, Mustelus schmitti is the most landing shark in Argentina (SW Atlantic)where reductions in the abundance have been detected. The sustainability of M. schmitti to exploitation using a demographic analysis, was examined. The intrinsic rate of population increase (r)and extinction risk under several harvesting strategies were estimated. For this purpose a stage-structured female-only matrix model was applied, considering the mortality and reproductive parameters to each stage. The estimate of length at maturity from the logistic curve was 56.04 cm. The fertility per female ranged between 1 and 15 pups and it was increased with total length. The Mortality...

Polanco-F., A.; Quintero-Gil, J.A.; Cortés, F.; Duque, G..

The relationship between environmental variables (depth, temperature and salinity) and the abundance of sharks (Mustelus schmitti and Squatina guggenheim) and skates (Sympterygia bonapartii, Rioraja agassizi and Atlantoraja castelnaui) was analyzed in the Southwestern Atlantic coastal waters (between 34~'S and 42~'S at depths of less than 50 m from the coast line). Data were collected during research Cruises carried out by the National Institute of Fisheries Research and Development (INIDEP) during winter and late spring. Due to differences in the continental water discharges, salinity spatial distribution and in the environmental condition seasonality, data from the Río de la Plata and El Rincón were independently analyzed. Shark and skate species shows...
