Restoring soil functionality in degraded areas within vineyards by organic treatments: the experimental layout of the RESOLVE Core-organic+ project Organic Eprints

Degraded areas are frequent in vineyards, even if managed by organic farming, mainly caused by soil truncation, soil erosion, or salts enrichment. Recovering strategies implemented in 19 degraded vineyards in 5 countries within the RESOLVE project concerned: (i) composted organic amendments, or seeding of cover crops (including legumes) for (ii) green manure or (iii) dry mulch. The relationships between vineyard management and pedo-climatic conditions are useful to better understand other contributions dealing with RESOLVE project reported in the present special issue. In Italian vineyards it is common to find more or less extended areas with chemico-physical or biological soil deficiencies and problems in plant vigor and grape production. A reduced agronomic functionality is caused by wrong soil managements and improper land preparation before vine plantations. A strong land transformation alters, in fact, the existing natural balance, causing loss of organic matter and nutrients, erosions, reduction of available water and metal accumulation. Improper or excessive land preparation methods in vineyards before planting can have a considerable impact on soil functionality. They include excessive levelling and deep ploughing leading to disturbances of the natural contour of slopes and destruction, truncation and burial of soil horizons. Manipulations may significantly modify chemical, physical, biological and hydrological balance of soils. The Resolve research project set up a multidisciplinary research work to evaluate the effects of possible errors in soil management during pre-planting and vineyard cultivation, leading to severe soil erosion. Different soil functionalities were considered, namely provision of grape yield and quality, water and nutrient supply, carbon sequestration, organic matter recycling, and soil biodiversity. The project involved 19 experimental organically farmed vineyards situated in Italy, France, Spain and Slovenia (wine grape), and in Turkey (table grape). The aim of the project was to understand the causes of soil malfunctioning and work out a proper strategy to restore soil fertility.

Il progetto ReSolve ha voluto testare tre diverse pratiche agronomiche biologiche per il recupero di aree di vigneto con suoli degradati, per cause legate allo scasso, ai livellamenti e all’erosione. L’obiettivo primario per il recupero di queste aree è quello di aumentare la dotazione di sostanza organica nel suolo, così da migliorarne la struttura, l’areazione, la fertilità chimica e l’attività biologica. Le pratiche testate sono state: la forte aggiunta di compost, in quantità di circa 40 tonnellate ad ettaro; un sovescio con leguminose e graminacee (in Italia orzo e favino); una copertura con leguminose riseminanti per il taglio pre-estivo e la pacciamatura secca dell’interfilare. Planning new vineyard needs accurate information about soil features and their spatial variability. The use of soil proximal sensors, coupled by few detailed soil observations and analysis allows to obtain high detailed maps of soil variability at affordable costs. The work showed the methodology to interpolate the proximal sensors data and to delineate homogeneous area by clustering, corresponding to likely soil units. The description and analysis of one profile for each homogeneous area allowed to describe the soil features of each soil typological units and to produce useful thematic maps for vineyard planning.
