| The study aims to discriminate juvenile and adult concentration areas of white croacker Micropogonias furnieri and striped weakfish Cynoscion striatus in two different areas: Argentine-Uruguayan Common Fishing Zone (AUCFZ) and El Rincón (Buenos Aires Prov., Argentina). The length structure and the relative abundance of these two species were analyzed with data from a research cruise carried out by R/V Dr.E.L.Holmberg during November 1994. | The species, like other members of the Family Sparidae, has a hermaphroditic phase in its sexual development, affecting the population partially during the first period of life. The sexual differentiation mechanisms have been inferred by the way of macroscopic characterization and proportionality of the different stages observed during the first five year classes. The highest proportion of specimens with bisexual gonads is observed during the third year of life: from the macroscopical point of view, both sexes are equally developed or with predominance of the masculine crest; microscopically, both are functional and synchronous. | The species of the Genus Merluccius present in argentine waters, Merluccius hubbsi and M.polylepis are similar externally and it is very difficult to separate them in the capture. Knowing the importance of both species from the commercial point of view, and the need of a correct identification, some morphological characteristics have been compared, looking for external differences, useful for the identification on board. The samples have been taken from the total area of distribution of both species in argentine waters. A total of 154 specimen of Merluccius hubbsi and 105 of M.polylepis were analyzed. |

| Whitemouth croaker Micropogonias furnieri fishery during three intensive fishing seasons in the outer area of the La Plata River (Argentina-Uruguay) is analyzed. Resource exploitation in the South Atlantic area shows a general retraction of the distribution range and an isolation of the La Plata River stock where most of the fishing effort concentrates. The species market evolution brought about, for Argentina and Uruguay, an important shift in its dynamics as of 1992, when the product insertion in Asiatic markets generated an important commercial attraction and a subsequent increase in the fishing effort by the argentine inshore coastal fleet.
