ANALYZING THE PERCEIVED IMPACT OF ISO 9000 STANDARDS ON U.S. AGRIBUSINESSES SITES AgEcon
Mumma, Gerald A.; Allen, Albert J.; Couvillion, Warren C.; Abdulkadri, Abdullahi O.; Mugalla, Constance Ileko.
We used a non-competitive market framework to assess the perceived impact of ISO 9000 standards on the operational efficiency of registered U.S. agribusiness sites. Kendall Coefficient of Concordance, W, was used to rank selected reasons for seeking registration to ISO 9000 standards. The results indicated that registered sites seem to be achieving their goals for registration.

AN ANALYSIS OF SELECTED PERFORMANCE INDICATORS FOR U.S. AGRIBUSINESS SITES REGISTERED TO ISO 9000 SERIES OF STANDARDS AgEcon
Mumma, Gerald A.; Allen, Albert J.; Couvillion, Warren C..
A factor analysis examined underlying relationships of selected performance indicators for U.S. ISO 9000-registered agribusiness sites. The factoring technique uniquely identified five of six primary factors-namely, improved quality performance, better training of personnel and document control, product prices, external audits, and cost of nonconformity. A sixth ill-defined factor is also identified. Each identified factor could influence the market position and/or profitability of an ISO 9000 registered agribusiness site.

DESIGNING GRADUATE EDUCATION FOR AGRIBUSINESS STUDENTS AgEcon
Phillips, Travis D.; Couvillion, Warren C.; Daughtrey, Zoel W.; Burckel, Daryl V..
For several years, universities in the U.S. have been struggling with defining and refining undergraduate and graduate agribusiness education programs. With the release of the recommendations of the National Agribusiness Education Commission, the search for the key ingredients of a Masters-level program has intensified. Mississippi State University has been among those universities attempting to define the parameters of a "cutting edge" agribusiness program. Faculty interest within the College of Business and Industry and the Agricultural Economics Department to develop a joint program has precipitated intensive efforts to achieve this goal. A nationally recognized agribusiness group of six academic leaders served as a Cooperative State Research Service...

MARKET STRUCTURE, MARKET SHARE, AND PROFITS IN THE SURFACE FREIGHT INDUSTRY AgEcon
Kari, Fatimah; Jaafar, Abdul H.; Allen, Albert J.; Couvillion, Warren C..
The surface freight industry was deregulated in 1980. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship between profitability and market power in the trucking industry that transport agricultural commodities. Fulfilling this objective would allow us to determine whether the market structure that has emerged is one that is based on competition. The research method will be based on the structure-conduct-performance paradigm. Results of this study indicated that efficiency is the driving force behind performance of firms. These suggest that the 1980 Motor Carrier Act had produced its intended purpose in the agricultural commodities transport industry.

SOYBEANS QUALITY PRICE DIFFERENTIALS FROM AN ELEVATOR'S PERSPECTIVE AgEcon
Murova, Olga I.; Mumma, Gerald A.; Hudson, Darren; Couvillion, Warren C..
Soybean prices are determined by interaction between various factors. At an elevator, discount prices for unique characteristics can range from 0.02 cents per bushel to 7.71 cents per bushel of soybeans. This variation suggests that producers of soybeans need quality-characteristic specific information concerning soybeans pricing at the market. This study uses a hedonic model to evaluate price differentials associated with soybean quality based on grain elevator data during the 1998 production period. Foreign material, moisture, bean damage, and net weight were found to significantly influence the cash price of soybeans.

A PRELIMINARY ECONOMIC ASSESSMENT OF ROUNDUP READY SOYBEANS IN MISSISSIPPI AgEcon
Couvillion, Warren C.; Kari, Fatimah; Hudson, Darren; Allen, Albert J..
The advent of genetically altered seed has had a revolutionary effect on the cotton, soybean, and corn seed industries. The basic premise for the use of these seed are to reduce costs through lower applications of chemicals and savings on trips through the field, thus, lowering production costs. Seed companies, however, charge a premium and a fee for use of the seed. This paper compares the costs associated with conventional and roundup ready soybeans. Data were collected from the ACost of Production@ survey of Mississippi producers that is administered by Mississippi State University through the National Agricultural Statistics Service. The survey is a random sample of producers fields that allows for a derivation of the cost of production for each field....
