This study examines some of the issues that are often encountered when analysing the socio-economic information of expenditure surveys using the Colombian 1985 urban expenditure survey as an example. This study discusses the problem of estimating prices when only information on expenditures and demographic characteristics is available, the options available when aggregating commodities and defining demographic or labour information, and the advantages and drawbacks in choosing total expenditure as a proxy for income or as the metric for poverty measurement. The study also applies non-parametric density estimation as a form of exploratory data analysis and as a means to learn from the data about the most proper parametric specification. |

An important source of growth for Australian broadacre agriculture has been technical progress. We compare alternative measures of productivity growth including the traditional Tornqvist-Thiel total factor productivity index; variants of this approach that allow decreasing returns to scale; the Fisher ideal index; other nonparametric measures that do not impose particular functional forms and an econometric estimate from a translog industry cost function. The annual growth in productivity in broadacre agriculture over the period from 1953 to 1994 was in the range of 2.4 to 2.6 per cent and hence was quite robust to measurement technique. |

The paper develops the implications of competitive market equilibrium for production and household behavior when some prices are endogenously determined. The properties of market equilibrium functions are explored, including the effects of pricing policy. A Slutsky-type equation relating compensated and uncompensated market equilibrium functions is derived. Implications for multi-market welfare analysis are presented, focusing on the effects of pricing policy and technical change. |

This paper develops the formulation of a spatial equilibrium model with intermediate products. The presence of intermediate products brings a better representation of the real world, accounting for the technological relationships among commodities in the several stages of production. Instead of the usual assumption of constant costs of transformation, positively sloped cost of transformation functions are assumed, reflecting increasing marginal costs of transformation. The model is implemented and validated in the analysis of the optimal allocation and pricing of animal products, grains and oilseeds in the MERCOSUR. |

A generalization of Shephard's distance functions is proposed, extending the usefulness of distance functions in economic analysis. Applications to efficiency measurements and productivity analysis are presented. New indexes of productivity, and technical, allocative and scale efficiency are proposed and analyzed. Interpretation of these indexes in terms of ray-average cost, ray-average revenue, and cost-to-revenue ratio is discussed. |

Nonparametric methods are used to measure the impacts of public research expenditures on Australian broadacre agriculture over the 1953-94 period. The data and methods used were unable to recover separate impacts due to extension under several alternative specifications. Preliminary results using both unrestricted and 30 year lagged specifications of the research impacts on productivity suggest that while certain aspects of the recovered multi-input/output technologies are quite robust to alternative specifications (in particular, the associated Malmquist total factor productivity indexes), other aspects are less stable (in particular, the indexes on input (and to a lesser extent, output) biased technical change). |

The objective of this paper is to develop an economic analysis of the impacts of further trade liberalization on Asian dairy markets. In order to achieve this, we first make a review of Asian dairy policies from the perspective of domestic support, market access and export subsidy. Then a world dairy model is employed, which reflects both vertical and spatial characteristics of the world dairy sector. We analyze the separate and combined impacts of eliminating Japan's domestic dairy subsidy, removing other Asian countries dairy trade policies excluding Japan, eliminating all Asian countries domestic dairy and trade policies, and multilateral dairy trade liberalization around the world. We find that Japan and Korea's producers will suffer much bigger losses... |

Many people share the view that too little is invested in R & D in agriculture. The relationship between several measures of productivity and research expenditure was estimated using data from ABARE's surveys of broadacre industries and a new data series on R & D expenditure for the period 1953 to 1988. The internal rate of return to research was estimated to be in the range of 15 to 40 percent which does not provide strong evidence that Australia is either under- or over-investing in public research. |

In a period of market liberalization and multilateral trade negotiations, price discrimination for commodities with distinct markets provides additional policy options to support farm income. While both the USA and Canada have implemented price discrimination policies in their domestic dairy sector, so far the European Union (EU) has not. This paper evaluates the options of developing a price discrimination policy in the EU dairy sector. The analysis is based on an interregional model of the EU dairy sector, involving milk production, dairy processing, and consumption of ten dairy commodities in nine regions. The paper shows that a price discrimination policy that increases prices for commodities with more inelastic demand (fluid milk, soft dairy products)... |
