Near-Inertial Energy Propagation inside a Mediterranean Anticyclonic Eddy ArchiMer
Lelong, M.-pascale; Cuypers, Yannis; Bouruet-aubertot, Pascale.
Motivated by observations of a strong near-inertial wave signal at the base of the semi-permanent anticyclonic Cyprus eddy during the 2010 BOUM experiment, a numerical study is performed to investigate the role of near-inertial/eddy interactions in energy transfer out of the mixed layer. A hybrid temporal-spatial decomposition is used to split all variables into three independent components: slow (eddy) and fast (inertial oscillations + waves), which proves useful in understanding the flow dynamics. Through a detailed energy budget analysis, we find that the anticyclonic eddy acts as a catalyst in transferring wind-driven inertial energy to propagating waves. While the eddy sets the spatial scales of the waves, it does not participate in any energy...

Surface Salinity in the North Atlantic Subtropical Gyre During the STRASSE/SPURS Summer 2012 Cruise ArchiMer
Reverdin, Gilles; Morisset, Simon; Marie, Louis; Bourras, Denis; Sutherland, Graigory; Ward, Brian; Salvador, Joaquin; Font, Jordi; Cuypers, Yannis; Centurioni, Luca; Hormann, Verena; Koldziejczyk, Nicolas; Boutin, Jacqueline; D'Ovidio, Francesco; Nencioli, Francesco; Martin, Nicolas; Diverres, Denis; Alory, Gael; Lumpkin, Rick.
We investigated a 100 x 100 km high-salinity region of the North Atlantic subtropical gyre during the Sub-Tropical Atlantic Surface Salinity Experiment/Salinity Processes in the Upper-ocean Regional Study (STRASSE/SPURS) cruise from August 21, 2012, to September 9, 2012. Results showed great variability in sea surface salinity (SSS; over 0.3 psu) in the mesoscale, over 7 cm of total evaporation, and little diapycnal mixing below 36 m depth, the deepest mixed layers encountered. Strong currents in the southwestern part of the domain, and the penetration of freshwater, suggest that advection contributed greatly to salinity evolution. However, it was further observed that a smaller cyclonic structure tucked between the high SSS band and the strongest currents...

Contrasted turbulence intensities in the Indonesian Throughflow: a challenge for parameterizing energy dissipation rate ArchiMer
Bouruet-aubertot, Pascale; Cuypers, Yannis; Ferron, Bruno; Dausse, Denis; Menage, Olivier; Atmadipoera, Agus; Jaya, Indra.
Microstructure measurements were performed along two sections through the Halmahera Sea and the Ombai Strait and at a station in the deep Banda Sea. Contrasting dissipation rates (𝜖) and vertical eddy diffusivities (K z ) were obtained with depth-averaged ranges of ∼[9×10−10−10−5] W kg− 1 and of ∼[1×10−5−2×10−3] m2 s− 1, respectively. Similarly, turbulence intensity, I=ϵ/(νN2) with ν the kinematic viscosity and N the buoyancy frequency, was found to vary seven orders of magnitude with values up to 107. These large ranges of variations were correlated with the internal tide energy level, which highlights the contrast between regions close and far from internal tide generations. Finescale parameterizations of 𝜖 induced by the breaking of...

The science guiding the \EURECA campaign and its measurements are presented. \EURECA comprised roughly five weeks of measurements in the downstream winter trades of the North Atlantic — eastward and south-eastward of Barbados. Through its ability to characterize processes operating across a wide range of scales, \EURECA marked a turning point in our ability to observationally study factors influencing clouds in the trades, how they will respond to warming, and their link to other components of the earth system, such as upper-ocean processes or, or the life-cycle of particulate matter. This characterization was made possible by thousands (2500) of sondes distributed to measure circulations on meso (200 km) and larger (500 km) scales, roughly four hundred...

Longitudinal contrast in Turbulence along a ∼ 19S section in the Pacific and its consequences on biogeochemical fluxes ArchiMer
Bouruet-aubertot, Pascale; Cuypers, Yannis; Doglioli, Andrea; Caffin, Mathieu; Yohia, Christophe; De Verneil, Alain; Petrenko, Anne; Lefèvre, Dominique; Le Goff, Hervé; Rougier, Gilles; Picheral, Marc; Moutin, Thierry.
Microstructure measurements were performed along the OUTPACE longitudinal transect in the tropical Pacific (Moutin and Bonnet, 2015). Small-scale dynamics and three-dimensional turbulence in the first 800m surface layer were characterized based on hydrographic and current measurements at fine scale and turbulence measurements at cm scale using a vertical microstructure profiler. The possible impact of turbulence on biogeochemical budgets in the surface layer was also addressed in this region of increasing oligotrophy to the East. The dissipation rate of turbulent kinetic energy, ε, showed an interesting contrast along the longitudinal transect with higher turbulence level in the West, i.e. the Melanesian Archipelago, compared to the East, within the South...
