Polar Front around the Kerguelen Islands: An up-to-date determination and associated circulation of surface/subsurface waters ArchiMer
Park, Young-hyang; Durand, Isabelle; Kestenare, Elodie; Rougier, Gilles; Zhou, Meng; D'Ovidio, Francesco; Cotte, Cedric; Lee, Jae-hak.
The circulation of iron-rich shelf waters around the Kerguelen Islands plays a crucial role for a climatically important, annually recurrent phytoplankton spring bloom over the sluggish shelf region and its downstream plume area along the Antarctic circumpolar flow. However, there is a long-standing confusion about the Polar Front (PF) in the Kerguelen region due to diverse suggestions in the literature for its geographical location with an extreme difference over 10° of latitude. Based on abundant historical hydrographic data, the in situ hydrographic and current measurements during the 2011 KEOPS2 cruise, satellite chlorophyll images, and altimetry-derived surface velocity fields, we determine and validate an up-to-date location of the PF around the...

A review of the LATEX project: mesoscale to submesoscale processes in a coastal environment ArchiMer
Petrenko, Anne A.; Doglioli, Andrea M.; Nencioli, Francesco; Kersale, Marion; Hu, Ziyuan; D'Ovidio, Francesco.
The main objective of the LAgrangian Transport EXperiment (LATEX) project was to study the influence of coastal mesoscale and submesoscale physical processes on circulation dynamics, cross-shelf exchanges, and biogeochemistry in the western continental shelf of the Gulf of Lion, Northwestern Mediterranean Sea. LATEX was a five-year multidisciplinary project based on the combined analysis of numerical model simulations and multi-platform field experiments. The model component included a ten year realistic 3D numerical simulation, with a 1 km hor-izontal resolution over the gulf, nested in a coarser 3 km resolution model. The in situ component involved four cruises, including a large-scale multidisciplinary campaign with two research vessels in 2010. This...

Surface Salinity in the North Atlantic Subtropical Gyre During the STRASSE/SPURS Summer 2012 Cruise ArchiMer
Reverdin, Gilles; Morisset, Simon; Marie, Louis; Bourras, Denis; Sutherland, Graigory; Ward, Brian; Salvador, Joaquin; Font, Jordi; Cuypers, Yannis; Centurioni, Luca; Hormann, Verena; Koldziejczyk, Nicolas; Boutin, Jacqueline; D'Ovidio, Francesco; Nencioli, Francesco; Martin, Nicolas; Diverres, Denis; Alory, Gael; Lumpkin, Rick.
We investigated a 100 x 100 km high-salinity region of the North Atlantic subtropical gyre during the Sub-Tropical Atlantic Surface Salinity Experiment/Salinity Processes in the Upper-ocean Regional Study (STRASSE/SPURS) cruise from August 21, 2012, to September 9, 2012. Results showed great variability in sea surface salinity (SSS; over 0.3 psu) in the mesoscale, over 7 cm of total evaporation, and little diapycnal mixing below 36 m depth, the deepest mixed layers encountered. Strong currents in the southwestern part of the domain, and the penetration of freshwater, suggest that advection contributed greatly to salinity evolution. However, it was further observed that a smaller cyclonic structure tucked between the high SSS band and the strongest currents...

Comparison between Eulerian diagnostics and finite-size Lyapunov exponents computed from altimetry in the Algerian basin ArchiMer
D'Ovidio, Francesco; Isern-fontanet, Jordi; Lopez, Cristobal; Hernandez Garcia, Emilio; Garcia Ladona, Emilio.
Transport and mixing properties of surface currents can be detected from altimetric data by both Eulerian and Lagrangian diagnostics. In contrast with Eulerian diagnostics, Lagrangian tools like the local Lyapunov exponents have the advantage of exploiting both spatial and temporal variability of the velocity field and are in principle able to unveil subgrid filaments generated by chaotic stirring. However, one may wonder whether this theoretical advantage is of practical interest in real-data, mesoscale and sub-mesoscale analysis, because of the uncertainties and resolution of altimetric products, and the non-passive nature of biogeochemical tracers. Here we compare the ability of standard Eulerian diagnostics and the finite-size Lyapunov exponent in...

Summertime modification of surface fronts in the North Atlantic subpolar gyre ArchiMer
Despres, Agnes; Reverdin, Gilles; D'Ovidio, Francesco.
A 12-yearlong thermosalinograph data set from ships of opportunity was used to make an extensive study of meso-scale surface fronts in the western part of the North Atlantic subpolar gyre from 1997 to 2009. Fronts are identified on a sea-surface-salinity/sea surface temperature gradient criterion with a typical width of 20 to 60 km. The seasonal hydrographic properties of fronts are investigated. We find that, whereas salinity jumps across fronts are close to the larger scale variations, the temperature jumps across fronts are often smaller than the larger scale variations, in particular in summer-time. We also find in June vertical profiles that the relative weight of temperature over salinity in the density jump across fronts is smaller at the surface...

Impact of moderate energetic fine-scale dynamics on the phytoplankton community structure in the western Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer
Tzortzis, Roxane; Doglioli, Andrea M; Barrillon, Stéphanie; Petrenko, Anne A; D'Ovidio, Francesco; Izard, Lloyd; Thyssen, Melilotus; Pascual, Ananda; Barcelo-llull, Barbara; Cyr, Frédéric; Tedetti, Marc; Bhairy, Nagib; Garreau, Pierre; Dumas, Franck; Gregori, Gérald.
Model simulations and remote sensing observations show that ocean dynamics at fine scales (1–100 km in space, day–weeks in time) strongly influence the distribution of phytoplankton. However, only few in situ samplings have been performed and most of them in boundary currents which may not be representative of less energetic regions. The PROTEVSMED-SWOT cruise took place in the moderately energetic waters of the western Mediterranean Sea, in the southern region of the Balearic Islands. Taking advantage of near-real time satellite information, a sampling strategy was defined in order to cross a frontal zone separating different water masses. Multi-parametric in situ sensors mounted on the vessel, on a towed fish and on an ocean glider were used to sample at...

In situ estimates of submesoscale horizontal eddy diffusivity across an ocean front ArchiMer
Nencioli, Francesco; D'Ovidio, Francesco; Doglioli, Andrea; Petrenko, Anne.
In the last decade, the rapid advancements in computational power have favored the development of high-resolution numerical models capable of directly resolving small-scale structures such as fronts and filaments. Such models have greatly improved our understanding of submesoscale dynamics. At the same time, the small dimensions and short duration of these structures still pose major challenges for small-scale dedicated field experiments. For this reason, submesoscale studies from in situ observations are still relatively scarce and quantitative estimates of key physical parameters for high-resolution numerical models, such as horizontal eddy diffusivity, are still lacking. This study presents a novel approach for computing in situ horizontal eddy...

FUMSECK cruise report ArchiMer
Barrillon, Stéphanie; Bataille, Hubert; Bhairy, Nagib; Comby, Caroline; Coulon, Théo; Doglioli, Andrea; D'Ovidio, Francesco; Fuda, Jean-luc; Gregori, Gérald; Petrenko, Anne; Ricout, Anaïs; Rousselet, Louise; Thyssen, Melilotus; Tzortzis, Roxane.
The FUMSECK cruise was a one-week technological cruise, which took place in spring 2019, in the gulf of Genoa (NW Mediterranean Sea), onboard the R/V T´ethys II. Its aim was to perform several technological tests of some instruments used for the study of the fine-scale processes and dynamics. It was conducted in preparation of the BioSWOT-Med cruise in the SW Mediterranean Sea in 2022, planned as part of the “Adopt a Cross Over” initiative organising simultaneous oceanographic cruises around the world during the SWOT fast sampling phase. During FUMSECK we tested various technological innovations for the study of fine-scale dynamics and their coupling with biogeochemistry.

Chemometric perspectives on plankton community responses to natural iron fertilisation over and downstream of the Kerguelen Plateau in the Southern Ocean ArchiMer
Trull, Thomas; Davies, Diana M.; Dehairs, Frank; Cavagna, Anne-julie; Lasbleiz, Marine; Laurenceau Cornec, Emmanuel C.; D'Ovidio, Francesco; Planchon, Frederic; Leblanc, Karine; Queguiner, Bernard; Blain, Stephane.
We examined phytoplankton community responses to natural iron fertilisation at 32 sites over and downstream from the Kerguelen Plateau in the Southern Ocean during the austral spring bloom in October-November 2011. The community structure was estimated from chemical and isotopic measurements (particulate organic carbon - POC; C-13-POC; particulate nitrogen -PN; N-15-PN; and biogenic silica - BSi) on size-fractionated samples from surface waters (300, 210, 50, 20, 5, and 1 mu m fractions). Higher values of C-13-POC (vs. co-located C-13 values for dissolved inorganic carbon -DIC) were taken as indicative of faster growth rates and higher values of N-15-PN (vs. co-located N-15-NO3 source values) as indicative of greater nitrate use (rather than ammonium use,...
