We aim to create an international network of farmers and scientists to jointly develop new and interdisciplinary approaches to health measurement and research in ecological agriculture. First, to establish common ground, we identified personal principles and strategies of best practice that make organic farmers successful in running healthy farm systems. Building on this practice experience and findings from a former research project (Vieweger & Döring, 2015), we aim to produce a set of transferable strategies to increase the direct translation of organic principles into practice and improve the understanding of health concepts in practice. For the identification of example farmers in three countries (Austria, Germany, UK), we used an online... |

The mouldboard plough is the traditional and proven method of preparing a seedbed for drilling and controlling arable weeds. However there is a downside; trials have shown deterioration in structural stability, losses of soil organic matter, poor moisture retention and infiltration rates (Riley et al 2008). Farmers have long been aware of these adverse impacts of mouldboard ploughing, but concerns over the greenhouse gas emissions associated with tractor usage have prompted a fresh look at cultivations. ORC researchers, Oliver Crowley, Jemima Showering and Thomas F. Döring consider the case for non-inversion tillage. |

Data of comparative studies about carabid beetles in organically and conventionally managed winter cereal fields of central Europe, using the pitfall trapping method, were collected from the literature and unpublished data sources and were then pooled and analysed. According to an index, which was designed to calculate how much a species benefits from organic management, Carabus auratus turned out to benefit most. Some Amara species (A. familiaris, A. similata and A. aenea) as well as Pseudoophonus rufipes and Harpalus affinis also showed high index values. When analysing the traits of the carabids, the habitat preference was the most important variable for the differentiation of organic and conventional management. The stronger the preference for open... |

In 2010, the BLE commissioned an evaluation of the Federal Organic Farming Scheme (BÖL), running since 2001. This paper reports on the approach taken in the evaluation of its research component, selected findings, and recommendations. An impact model of the BÖL scheme was developed to analyse how the various measures could contribute to the scheme’s overall aims and objectives. Data from the BLE research project database were analysed to assess the distribution of resources over time by topic and by research provider. At project level, a random selection of 83 projects was reviewed by external experts, including both scientists and other stakeholders to assess their quality and relevance. An online survey of 104 project leaders and interviews with 30... |

In evolutionary plant breeding, crop populations with a high level of genetic diversity are subjected to the forces of natural selection. In a cycle of sowing and re-sowing seed from the plant population year after year, those plants favored under prevailing growing conditions are expected to contribute more seed to the next generation than plants with lower fitness. Thus, evolving crop populations have the capability of adapting to the conditions under which they are grown. Here we review the current state of research in evolutionary plant breeding and concentrate on the ability of evolving plant populations to deal with stressful, variable, and unpredictable environments. This resilience of evolving plant populations is seen as a major advantage under... |

The EU project OSCAR (“Optimising Subsidiary Crop Applications in Rotations” [http://www.oscar-covercrops.eu]) aims to achieve comprehensive advances in conservation agriculture to improve sustainability of low-input, organic, and conventional farming systems. The research integrates living mulches, dead mulches, or cover crops with the main crops in rotations so as to simultaneously improve crop nutrition, health, and productivity. Coordinated field experiments in addition to three long-term experiments take place in different climatic regions in Europe and Brazil. Economic and ecological impacts including legume root health will be investigated. Private breeders and manufacturers of agricultural equipment are involved in finding adapted solutions by... |

One of the objectives of the TILMAN-ORG Project is to improve weed management under conservation agriculture (reduced tillage and/or cover crops) in organic arable systems. The shift from ploughing to conservation agriculture should not only maintain crop yield but possibly improve weed community diversity. This paper summarises the results on (1) weed abundance, (2) weed diversity and (3) crop yield obtained in the first year of the project (2012) in 13 trials scattered across Europe. |

Plant health is a frequently used but ill-defined term. However, there is an extensive literature on general health definitions and health criteria in human medicine. Taking up ideas from these philosophical debates, concepts of plant health are reviewed and a framework developed to locate these concepts according to their position in several philosophical controversies. In particular, (i) the role of values in defining plant health in a naturalist versus a normativist approach; (ii) negative and positive definitions of plant health; (iii) reductionist versus holistic perspectives; (iv) the focus on functionality versus resilience, i.e. the ability of the plant to perform under stress with or without human interference; (v) materialist versus vitalist... |
