| In 2010, the BLE commissioned an evaluation of the Federal Organic Farming Scheme (BÖL), running since 2001. This paper reports on the approach taken in the evaluation of its research component, selected findings, and recommendations. An impact model of the BÖL scheme was developed to analyse how the various measures could contribute to the scheme’s overall aims and objectives. Data from the BLE research project database were analysed to assess the distribution of resources over time by topic and by research provider. | In Feldversuchen mit verschiedenen Zwischenfrüchten (Phacelia, Grünroggen, Sandhafer, Winterrübsen, Ölrettich, Inkarnat- und Perserklee) wurde das Potenzial zur Reduzierung der Nitratauswaschung über Winter für alle nicht-legumen Arten bestätigt. Aufgrund vglw. hoher Verluste an Stickstoff aus der Sprossmasse über Winter sowie einem weiten C/N-Verhältnis der Zwischenfruchtreste (v.a. Stängel), scheint das Potenzial zur Steigerung der Nährstoffmineralisation im Frühjahr relativ gering sein. |

| Data of comparative studies about carabid beetles in organically and conventionally managed winter cereal fields of central Europe, using the pitfall trapping method, were collected from the literature and unpublished data sources and were then pooled and analysed. According to an index, which was designed to calculate how much a species benefits from organic management, Carabus auratus turned out to benefit most. Some Amara species (A. familiaris, A. similata and A. aenea) as well as Pseudoophonus rufipes and Harpalus affinis also showed high index values. | Im Jahr 2010 wurde von der BLE eine Evaluation des seit 2001 bestehenden Bundesprogramms Ökologischer Landbau (BÖL) in Auftrag gegeben. Ziel der 2010 gestarteten Evaluation zum FuE-Bereich war es, die Relevanz der Forschung, ihre Wirksamkeit sowie die Effizienz des Mitteleinsatzes zu prüfen, zu bewerten und Empfehlungen zur Optimierung zu unterbreiten. Den Rahmen lieferten eine Analyse der Maßnahmen und Ziele des BÖL und ein daraus entwickeltes Wirkungsmodell. | In evolutionary plant breeding, crop populations with a high level of genetic diversity are subjected to the forces of natural selection. In a cycle of sowing and re-sowing seed from the plant population year after year, those plants favored under prevailing growing conditions are expected to contribute more seed to the next generation than plants with lower fitness. | The mouldboard plough is the traditional and proven method of preparing a seedbed for drilling and controlling arable weeds. However there is a downside; trials have shown deterioration in structural stability, losses of soil organic matter, poor moisture retention and infiltration rates (Riley et al 2008). | One of the objectives of the TILMAN-ORG Project is to improve weed management under conservation agriculture (reduced tillage and/or cover crops) in organic arable systems. The shift from ploughing to conservation agriculture should not only maintain crop yield but possibly improve weed community diversity.
