Information om produkters miljøbelastning efterspørges i stigende grad både som information mellem producenter, mellemhandlere og aftagere i kæden og blandt myndigheder og forbrugergrupper. Fødevarer udgør en vigtig del af en families samlede miljøbelastning og tidligere studier har vist at der er store forskelle imellem forskellige madvarers miljøbelastning pr. kg produkt (se f.eks. www.lcafood.dk). Dette skyldes både (uomgængelige) forskelle imellem produktionsprocesserne for forskellige produkter (f.eks. mælk vs. kartofler) og forskelle i ressourceforbrug og udledninger ved forskellige produktionsmetoder for det samme produkt. LCA of Soybean Meal Organic Eprints

Soybean meal is an important protein input to the European livestock production, with Argentina being an important supplier. The area cultivated with soybeans is still increasing globally, and so are the number of LCAs where the production of soybean meal forms part of the product chain. In recent years there has been increasing focus on how soybean production affects the environment. The purpose of the study was to estimate the environmental consequences of soybean meal consumption using a consequential LCA approach. The functional unit is 'one kg of soybean meal produced in Argentina and delivered to Rotterdam Harbor.

Environmental assessment tools for the evaluation and improvement of European livestock production systems Organic Eprints

Different types of assessment tools have been developed in Europe with the purpose of determining the environmental impact of various livestock production systems at farm level. The assessment tools differ in terms of which environmental objectives are included and how indicators are constructed and interpreted. The paper compares typical tools for environmental assessment of livestock production systems, and recommends selected indicators suitable for benchmarking. The assessment tools used very different types of indicators ranging from descriptions of farm management and quantification of input to estimates of emissions of, e.g., nitrate and ammonia. The indicators should be useful in a benchmarking process where farmers may improve their practices...

The environmental impact is one of the major pillars of concerns when addressing the sustainability of food production and sustainable food consumption strategies. To assess to what extent food production affects the environment, one needs to choose a proper environmental assessment tool. Different types of assessment tools have been developed to establish environmental indicators, which can be used to determine the environmental impact of livestock production systems or agricultural products. The environmen¬tal assessment tools can be divided into the area based or product based (Halberg et al., 2005).
