Monitoring strategies and scale-appropriate hydrologic and biogeochemical modelling for natural resource management Organic Eprints
Bende-Michl, U.; Volk, M.; Harmel, D.; Newham, L.; Dalgaard, T..
This short communication paper presents recommendations for developing scale-appropriate monitoring and modelling strategies to assist decision making in natural resource management (NRM). These ideas presented here were discussed in the session (S5) ‘Monitoring strategies and scale-appropriate hydrologic and biogeochemical modelling for natural resource management’ session at the 2008 International Environmental Modelling and Simulation Society conference, Barcelona, Spain. The outcomes of the session and recent international studies exemplify the need for a stronger collaboration and communication between researcher and model developer on the one side, and natural resource managers and the model users on the other side to increase knowledge in: 1)...

Transition to renewable resources - energy balance comparisons of organic and conventional farming systems and potentials for the mitigation of fossil resource use Organic Eprints
Dalgaard, T..
Today, agriculture and food production has major implications for the use of fossil energy and other resources, and a sustainable development implies transition towards new systems, based on renewable resources. The reduction of external inputs to the farm through efficient management of materials and energy is a central part of the organic principles (IFOAM 2013), and in most countries standards are implemented in the form of nationally adapted, organic farming regulations, with significant implications for the potential energy and matter flows in- and out of the agricultural systems, and thereby the energy balance and the use of renewable resources. Consequently, it is important to develop new and more resource efficient production systems mitigating...

Can organic farming help to reduce N-losses? Experiences from Denmark Organic Eprints
Dalgaard, T.; Halberg, N.; Kristensen, I.S..
This study is in two parts. In the first part, nitrogen N)losses per unit of milk and meat in Danish conventional and organic pig and dairy farming were compared on the basis of farm data. In the second part, organic and conventional dairy farming were compared in detail, using modelling. N-surpluses at different livestock densities, fodder intensities, and soil types were simulated. Finally, simulated N-surpluses were used in national scenarios for conversion to organic dairy farming in Denmark. In Part one, pig farming was found to have a higher N-efficiency than dairy farming. Organic pig production had a lower N-efficiency and a higher N-surplus per kg meat than conventional pig production. The possibilities to reduce N-loss by conversion to organic...

Organic cash crop farms as net energy producers: Energy balances and environmental effects Organic Eprints
Halberg, Niels; Dalgaard, R.; Berntsen, J.; Olesen, J.E.; Dalgaard, T..
Organic farming (OF) principles include the idea of reducing dependence on fossil fuels, but little has been achieved on this objective so far in Danish OF. Energy use and greenhouse gas emissions from an average 39 ha cash crop farm were calculated and alternative crop rotations for bio-energy production were modelled. Growing rapeseed on 10% of the land could produce bio-diesel to replace 50-60% of the tractor diesel used on the farm. Increasing Grass-clover area to 20% of the land and using half of this yield for biogas production could change the cash crop farm to a net energy producer, reduce green house gas emissions and improve the nutrient management on the farm while reducing overall output of products only marginally.

A model for fossil energy use in Danish agriculture used to compare organic and conventional farming Organic Eprints
Dalgaard, T.; Halberg, N.; Porter, J.R..
Knowledge about fossil energy use in agricultural systems is needed, because it can improve the understanding of how to reduce the unsustainable use of limited energy resources and the following greenhouse gas emissions. This study describes and validates a model to assess fossil energy use in Danish agriculture; gives an example of how the model can be used to compare organic and conventional farming; and discusses the implications and potentials of using the model to simulate energy use in scenarios of agricultural production. The model is a development of an existing model, which was too coarse to predict measured energy use on Danish farms. The model was validated at the field operational, thecroptype, and the national level, and can supplement the...

Can organic farming help to reduce national energy consumption and emissions of greenhouse gasses in Denmark? Organic Eprints
Dalgaard, T.; Halberg, N.; Fenger, J..
Methods to investigate whether organic farming might help toreduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions areneeded. The aim of this study is for the first to present anupscaling procedure, where an existing farm level energyconsumption model, in combination with the IntergovernmentalPanel on Climate Change’s guidelines, is used to calculateagricultural energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissionson the national level. Secondly, this procedure is used to simulatescenarios for conversion to organic farming in Denmark.Three scenarios for conversion to organic farming with thepresent crop yield and an expected improved future crop yieldare compared to the 1996-situation in Denmark, whereconventional farming dominates. In all scenarios, fossil...

Remote sensing based mapping of leaf nitrogen and leaf area index in European landscapes using the REGularized canopy reFLECtance (REGFLEC) model Organic Eprints
Boegh, E.; Houborg, R.; Bienkowski, J.; Braban, C.; Dalgaard, T.; van Dijk, N.; Dragosits, U.; Holmes, E.; Magliulo, V.; Schelde, K.; Di Tommasi, P.; Vitale, V..
Mapping was conducted using the REGFLEC model which is an automatic and image-based methodology developed for regional chlorophyll (Cab) and LAI estimation (i.e., Houborg et al., 2007; Houborg and Boegh, 2008; Houborg and Andersen, JARS 3, 2009). REGFLEC combines models for atmospheric correction (6S), canopy reflectance (ACRM) and leaf optics (PROSPECT). The REGFLEC tool corrects for impacts of atmospheric scattering and absorption, soil background reflectance and species specific vegetation characteristics (ie. leaf angle distribution). In this study, the REGFLEC model tool is applied to high spatial (10-20 m) resolution SPOT satellite data for mapping LAI and leaf N of agricultural landscapes located in Denmark, Poland, Scotland, the Netherlands and...

BioConcens: Biomass and bioenergy production agriculture – consequences for soil fertility, environment, spread of animal parasites and socio-economy Organic Eprints
Oleskowicz-Popiel, P; Ambus, P; Carter, M.S.; Dalgaard, T.; Hauggaard-Nielsen, H; Johansen, A; Jørgensen, U; Nielsen, A.M; Nielsen, H.B.; Nielsen, L.H; Olesen, J.E.; Roepstorff, A; Skytte, K; Schmidt, J.E.; Thomsen, A.B.; Thomsen, M.H.; Jensen, E.S..
The research programme called “international research cooperation and organic integrity” was commenced for a period 2006-2010. It is coordinated by DARCOF (The Danish Research Centre for Organic Farming). The whole programme, with acronym DARCOF III, consists of 15 projects (http://www.darcof.dk/research/darcofiii/index.html). One of them is BIOCONCENS - Biomass and bioenergy production in organic farming – consequences for soil fertility, environment, spread of animal parasites and socio-economy (http://www.bioconcens.elr.dk/uk/). The production of bioenergy in organic agriculture (OA) can reduce its dependency of fossil fuels and decrease green house gasses emission; consequently it will increase sustainability of organic farms. Biorefinery concept based...

Hvordan kan økologisk jordbrug være med til at styrke vækst og udvikling i landdistrikterne? Organic Eprints
Dalgaard, T.; Kjeldsen, C.; Kristensen, I.T..

SOME METHODOLOGICAL DIFFICULTIES OF CONDUCTING AGROECOLOGICAL STUDIES FROM A STATISTICAL PERSPECTIVE Organic Eprints
Bianconi, A.; von Zuben, C.J.; Habberman, G.; Govone, J.S.; Dalgaard, T..
It is widely accepted that statistical analyses are essential tools for improving agronomic techniques, and our goal was to discuss the importance of such tools to alternative agronomic approaches. Effective comparisons between organic and conventional production systems are not as common as they could be, because it is usually difficult to meet the assumptions of traditional statistical approaches in making such comparisons. In this context, the current paper indicates that alternative approaches (such as organic farming) should be promoted not only by encouraging farmers to deploy agroecological techniques, but also by providing agroecologists with robust analyses based on rigorous statistical procedures. Keywords: agroecology; multivariate statistics;...

Production of biomass and bioenergy in organic agriculture and its consequences for soil quality, environment, biodiversity and socio-economy Organic Eprints
Johansen, A.; Hauggaard-Nielsen, H.; Ambus, P.; Dalgaard, T.; Jørgensen, U.; Nielsen, A.M.; Nielsen, L.H.; Olesen, J.E.; Roepstorff, A.; Skytte, K.; Smith, J.E.; Thomsen, A.B.; Carter, M.S.; Jensen, E.S..
Production of bioenergy in organic agriculture may be implemented in the future to reduce the reliance on non-renewable fossil fuels and minimize greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Therefore it is important to assess the potential effect this may have on soil quality and biological parameters. This project aims at designing and evaluate a combined concept for biomass and bio-energy production in OA, while considering soil bio-geo-chemical cycling of plant nutrients and biodiversity of the soil microbiota.
