Effects of farm heterogeneity and methods for upscaling on modelled nitrogen losses in agricultural landscapes Organic Eprints

The aim of this study is to illustrate the importance of farm scale heterogeneity on nitrogen (N) losses in agricultural landscapes. Results are exemplified with a chain of N models calculating farm-N balances and distributing the N-surplus to N-losses (volatilisation, denitrification, leaching) and soil-N accumulation/release in a Danish landscape. Possible non-linearities in upscaling are assessed by comparing average model results based on (i) individual farm level calculations and (ii) averaged inputs at landscape level. Effects of the non-linearities that appear when scaling up from farm to landscape are demonstrated. • Økologiske marker har mere ukrudtsbiomasse end konventionelle. • Der er flere blomstrende arter i økologiske hegn end konventionelle forudsat, at der er kontinuitet i den økologiske drift. • Der er flere små pattedyr i små økologiske biotoper end konventionelle. • Fjernmålinger fra fly eller satellit, kaldet remote sensing, kan skelne hvilken afgrødetype der dyrkes, samt forekomsten af småbiotoper. • Uanset driftformen er det vigtigt at inddrage naturhensyn i driften, dvs., at der findes ekstensivt drevne arealer (græsmarker, overdrev, enge) til natur og direkte afsatte arealer til natur.

The direct payment system of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) provides income transfers to European farmers. Recently, several countries including England and Sweden have advocated the elimination of direct payments after 2013. Økologisk jordbrug beskytter naturen med sin pesticidfri dyrkning og mindre brug af gødning, men en række andre faktorer er lige så vigtige for beskyttelsen af agerlandets biodiversitet, viser ny forskning. Det gælder fx beskyttelsen af småbiotoper, den tidsmæssige kontinuitet af økologisk drevne arealer, og udviklingen af nye driftsformer og produktionslandskaber, der i særlig grad tager hensyn til naturen.

Buffers for biomass production in temperate European agriculture: A review and synthesis on function, ecosystem services and implementation Organic Eprints

In addition to their potential for biomass production, buffer strips on agricultural land have been shown to protect surface water quality by reducing erosion and nutrient leaching, and can play a key role in nature and flood protection, and the design of bioenergy landscapes resilient to climate changes, and the environmental pressures from intensive agriculture. Use of conservation buffers by farmers outside of designated schemes is very limited to date, but the increasing demand for bioenergy and the combination of agricultural production with nature protection calls for a much wider implementation. The assessment of the impacts of growing genetically modified (GM) crops remains a major political and scientific challenge in Europe. Concerns have been raised by the evidence of adverse and unexpected environmental effects and differing opinions on the outcomes of environmental risk assessments (ERA). Organic farming is generally acknowledged for its positive effects on biodiversity and other landscape services. However, the intensity of farming has changed significantly through the last decade as ranks of traditional holistic organic farmers have been joined by much more economically-driven new organic farmers. At the same time there have also been steady improvements in farming methodology and crop types resulting in efficiency in organic farming which can often rival its conventional counterparts. Therefore, large variations occur between organic farms.

Energiforbruget i jordbrugsproduktionen er interessant både fra et ressource synspunkt og fordi udledningen af CO2 fra forbrænding af fossil energi bidrager til drivhuseffekten. Både i målsætningerne for den danske Landsforening for økologisk jordbrug (LØJ) og i landboorganisationernes oplæg til Godt landmandsskab år 2000 indgår desuden mål om at reducere forbruget af fossil energi og få den bedst mulige energiudnyttelse. Simulering af fossilt energiforbrug og emission af drivhusgasser. Tre scenarier for omlægning til 100% økologisk jordbrug i Danmark Organic Eprints

Formålet med rapporten er at beskrive og anvende en metode til at vurdere ændringen i landbrugets forbrug af fossil energi og emission af drivhusgasser ved omlægning til 100% økologisk jordbrug i Danmark. Situationen for dansk landbrug i 1996 er sammenlignet med tre scenarier for 100% omlægning: A) Fuld selvforsyning med foder (0% import). Herved begrænses den mulige svineproduktion. B) 15% import af foder til drøvtyggere og 25% import til enmavede dyr (15-25% import). Også her begrænses svineproduktionen, men dog mindre en i scenario A. C) Fastholdelse af den samme animalske produktion som i 1996 (ubegrænset foderimport).

Landscape Agroecology: managing interactions between agriculture, nature and socio-economy Organic Eprints

State of the art GIS and database technologies for landscape scale analysis and the modelling of land use and environmental impacts are presented. These methods have been developed at University of Aarhus in multidisciplinary collaboration with other research institutions throughout Europe; for example during the EU research projects www.mea-scope.org and www.sensor-ip.eu. Visions for organic bioenergy production in Denmark Organic Eprints

There is a large potential for organic bioenergy production, which can be combined with the present food production and the provision of multiple other goods and services required by society; i.e. a cleaner aquatic environment, or nature values in cultural landscapes. This paper presents six scenarios for bioenergy production from organic farming in Denmark, with a total energy production potential of around 6.7 PJ/yr. This potential is compared to the present energy use of around 2.5 PJ/yr, and the po-tentials for energy savings equalling 0.1-0.5 PJ/yr.

Leaf biochemistry and biophysical parameters are important for simulating soil‐vegetation‐atmosphere exchanges of energy, water, CO2 and ammonia. The accumulation of leaf nitrogen (N) in vegetation canopies is a major component of the ecosystem N balance, and leaf N concentration and leaf area index (LAI) are important determinants of the maximum CO2 uptake by plants and trees. In NEU, high spatial resolution remote sensing data from the SPOT satellite were acquired to prepare maps of leaf N and LAI for 5 European landscapes. The organic farming structure has been analysed for all farms in Denmark 2005-2010. In 2005, the average farm size for organic farms was 50 ha, compared to 40 ha for conventional farms. For organic farms the largest average farm size in on sandy soils and for cattle farms, whereas the for conventional farms, the largest farms are on loamy soils, and cash crop, and pig farms. The farms has been classified into farm types accoring to the EUROSTAT methods. Hobby farms are defined with a number of standard working hours under 1871 timer/år (typically under 10-25 ha). Biomass energy in organic farming - the potential role of short rotattion coppice Organic Eprints

One of the aims of organic farming is to “reduce the use of non-renewable resources (e.g. fossil fuels) to a minimum”. So far, however, only very little progress has been made to introduce renewable energy in organic farming. This paper presents energy balances of Danish organic farming compared with energy balances of conventional farming. In general, the conversion to organic farming leads to a lower energy use (approximately 10% per unit of product). But the production of energy in organic farming is very low compared with the extensive utilisation of straw from conventional farming in Denmark (energy content of straw used for energy production was equivalent to 18% of total energy input in Danish agriculture in 1996). Does organic farming enhance biodiversity? Complex issues and modelling approaches Organic Eprints
