A new version of a hyperbenthic sledge with four superposed nets was used from 346 m to 3070 m depth in the southern part of the Bay of Biscay. This gear collects the near-bottom swimming macrofauna. The dominant zoological groups are asellot isopods and gammaridean amphipods. Two types of animal density gradient are observed: a vertically decreasing gradient from the lower to the upper level of the sledge at each station; and a depth-related decreasing gradient from the upper continental slope to the lowest stations in the Cap Ferret Canyon. Three different assemblages can be distinguished: between 346 m and 523 m on muddy sand; between 600 m and 1100 m on mud; and in Cap Ferret Canyon between 3040 m and 3070 m on mud. These results are compared with... |

The dynamics and growth of Owenia fusiformis juveniles were studied over a period of three months under different edaphic conditions in the eastern part of the Bay of Seine. Post-larval settlement was synchronous and showed the same high densities in different communities with or without adult populations. There was a rapid disappearance at the juvenile stage in the unfavourable bottoms. The distribution of the juveniles was gregarious. Growth was slow during the first month ; it was also highly variable. Growth differences were observed between stations: growth was higher in the station located just seaward of the Seine estuary. The relationships between edaphism, recruitment and growth of juveniles are discussed in relation to the changes in space and... |

The species composition and spatial distribution of macrofaunal assemblages in intertidal sands of Arcachon Bay, on the southwestern Atlantic coast of France, were investigated through a quantitative sampling of twenty stations representative of the various sandy habitats found in the bay, excluding the exposed beaches. Sampling was done on a single occasion, during the winter of 1988. A total of 150 macrobenthic species (> 1 mm) were collected. The abundance of macrofauna ranged from 89 to 52000 ind.m-2 (with a high dominance of the gastropod Hydrobia ulvae in some sites) and the biomass ranged from 1.3 to 42.5 g.m-2 dry weight. Thirteen additional species (belonging to temporary meiofauna and small macrofauna) were also sampled in the sieving fraction... |

Along the coast of France in the English Channel, muddy fine-sand communities are restricted to bays and estuaries, but in the southern North Sea they stretch out to larger areas (mesoscale continuum). We studied three regions containing these communities, each subject to different hydrological conditions and contrasting trophic structures of the water column. The Bay of Morlaix was strongly affected by the "Amoco Cadiz" oil spill of 1978 and recovered slowly. The Bay of Seine is influenced by high levels of nutrient input from the River Seine. A retention structure exists in the eastern part ensuring recruitment stability. The Gravelines area in the southern North Sea was invaded by the American jackknife clam (Ensis directus), which became a key species... |

Statistical analysis of long-term changes in marine communities generally involves recourse to multivariate methods. Some of these, such as Correspondence Analysis (CA), are very sensitive to the presence of rare species in the data, whereas other methods, such as Principal Components analysis (PCA) or Multidimensional Scaling (MDS) are only sensitive to the dominant species. Thus, it is necessary to identify rare species. We used an original method of species determination, based on a multinomial scheme and permitting the generalization of the classical presence/absence coding from a probabilistic viewpoint. This selection method was applied to the identification of the different categories of species (rare, intermediate or dominant) that constitute the... |
