Effects of exposure to petroleum hydrocarbons upon the metabolism of the common sole Solea solea ArchiMer
Davoodi, Fariba; Claireaux, Guy.
On December 12th, 1999, the oil tanker Erika sank off the southern coast of Brittany (France), releasing 20 000–30 000 tons of heavy oil in the open sea. Among the affected coastal habitats were important nurseries for numerous flatfish species and particularly for the common sole, Solea solea. To investigate the potential impact of the spill on this economically significant resource, we employed Fry's concept of metabolic scope for activity to assess the deleterious effect of fuel exposure on the functional integrity of juvenile sole. Fish were captured from uncontaminated areas and experimentally exposed to contamination conditions mimicking those encountered during the weeks that followed the Erika spill. Using respirometry techniques we measured basal...

Effect of exposure to petroleum hydrocarbons upon cardio-respiratory function in the common sole (Solea solea) ArchiMer
Claireaux, Guy; Davoodi, Fariba.
The long term consequences of oil exposure upon marine populations are still poorly evaluated. One particular missing piece of information relates to the link between oil exposure, individuals' ability to face environmental contingencies and populations' production and dynamics. In that context, the present paper investigates the impact of oil exposure upon fish cardio-respiratory performance, this performance being viewed as a key determinant of individual fitness. Experimental conditions replicated the contamination conditions observed during the weeks that immediately followed the Erika oil spill (west coast of France; December 1999). Sole (Solea solea), were exposed to number-2 oil for 5 days and were then challenged with an acute rise in temperature...

Influence of oil exposure on the physiology and ecology of the common sole Solea solea: Experimental and field approaches ArchiMer

Evaluating the ecological impact of an oil spill is a complex issue requiring coherently articulated examination of the sequence of interactions that link the cell, where contaminants exert their effects, to the ecosystem, where interactions with human activities arise. This sequence of interactions traverses the frontiers between scientific disciplines (chemistry, toxicology, physiology, and fisheries ecology). Using the common sole (Solea solea L.) as a model species for the coastal habitats polluted by the "Erika" oil spill, our research project attempted to define indices of functional integrity that characterised the consequences of fuel exposure at the different biological levels. The coupling of field observations with experimental laboratory work...
