Sources and transport of dissolved iron and manganese along the continental margin of the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Laes, Agathe; Blain, S; Laan, P; Ussher, S; Achterberg, E; Treguer, Paul; De Baar, H. J. W..
Dissolved iron (DFe; <0.2 mu m) and dissolved manganese (DMn; <0.2 mu m) concentrations were determined in the water column of the Bay of Biscay (eastern North Atlantic Ocean) in March 2002. The samples were collected along a transect traversing from the European continental shelf over the continental slope. The highest DFe and DMn concentrations (2.39 nM and 6.10 nM, respectively) were observed in the bottom waters on the shelf at stations closest to the coast. The release of trace metal from resuspended particles and the diffusion from pore waters were probably at the origin of elevated DFe and DMn concentrations in the Bottom Boundary Layer (BBL). In the slope region, the highest total dissolvable iron (TDFe), DFe and DMn values (24.6 nM, 1.58 nM...

Distribution of barium in the Weddell Gyre: Impact of circulation and biogeochemical processes ArchiMer
Hoppema, M.; Dehairs, F.; Navez, J.; Monnin, C.; Jeandel, C.; Fahrbach, E.; De Baar, H. J. W..
The Southern Ocean data base of dissolved barium (Bad) has been augmented with two densely sampled sections across the Weddell Gyre sampled by the icebreaker FS Polarstern during February and March 2005. Bad was found to be relatively high in the surface layer as compared to the adjacent waters north (Antarctic Circumpolar Current) and east (Antarctic Zone of the Indian sector). Compared to the inflowing water into the Weddell Gyre and also to the surface water, the deep water is characterized by a significant Ba-d enrichment. Depletion of Bad in the surface layer is associated with well-known biogeochemical processes, but we speculate that also sea-ice formation leads to the extraction of Ba from solution via barite (BaSO4) precipitation. The particulate...

The Surface Ocean CO2 Atlas (SOCAT), an activity of the international marine carbon research community, provides access to synthesis and gridded fCO(2) (fugacity of carbon dioxide) products for the surface oceans. Version 2 of SOCAT is an update of the previous release (version 1) with more data (increased from 6.3 million to 10.1 million surface water fCO(2) values) and extended data coverage (from 1968-2007 to 1968-2011). The quality control criteria, while identical in both versions, have been applied more strictly in version 2 than in version 1. The SOCAT website (http://www.socat.info/) has links to quality control comments, metadata, individual data set files, and synthesis and gridded data products. Interactive online tools allow visitors to explore...
