| The sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus is an important exploited resource on the Mediterranean coast and has been the subject of much research. In the Bay of Biscay, the situation is different, as some studies have been conducted on the Spanish Basque coast but few on the French part of that coast. However, the Basque coast offers favourable conditions for the development of this species, and its exploitation could be a source of potential diversification for fishermen, especially in the context of difficulties with some other resources. | In 2008, were recorded for the first time Derichthys serpentinus in the Bay of Biscay, Kyphosus sectator in the Pays basque, Liparis montagui in the Charente-Maritime, Boops boops in Normandy. Some juveniles of Dentex dentex were observed in the bassin d'Arcachon in 2007 and 2008. We indicated also the catches of Tetragonurus cuvieri, Callionymus reticulatus, Seriola rivoliana and Brama brama. |

| Cystoseira baccata, a biological quality element for the implementation of the Water Framework and Marine Strategy EU Directives, is a dominant species in the subtidal rocky bottoms of the Basque coast. | The new protocol, established by Auby et al. (2012) to the seagrass monitoring under the Water Framework Directive, was used in Txingudi bay (Hendaye, France). Based on 3 metrics ("taxonomy", "extension" and "density"), the quality index of the water body for the angiosperm indicator, was "medium", while it was in "good condition" in 2012. These results are explained by a sharp drop in the density observed on the monitoring station. The cartography of the species distribution showed a decrease of the total area of seagrass, particularly in the southern part of the mudflat. However, further north, small intertidal seagrass spots appeared. Atypical weather conditions in 2013 (cold, heavy spring rain) with silting of this area, could explain this situation. |

| Under the WFD monitoring the “subtidal macroalgae” parameter is calculated for the second time on the Basque coast water body from the protocol used in Britain and adapted to local environmental context. In 2011, three stations were sampled instead of 5 in 2008. The result is the same to the one obtained in 2008 with a quality index "medium" for the whole of the water body. The main criterion penalizing the calculation of the index is "opportunistic species" for each station. There is variability between sites according to the criteria between the two campaigns reflecting the interest of monitoring every three years on the three sites. |

| Biodiversity conservation and response of benthic communities to pressures, related to global change and human activities, are a research priority. They also constitute a useful indicator to define the environmental status of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive as part of the European Water Framework Directive (WFD).
