| Biologische landbouw wordt algemeen erkend als een voorloper om te groeien naar een duurzamere land- en tuinbouw. De ontwikkeling van de biologische sector in Vlaanderen wordt echter beperkt door een aantal operationele en institutionele inefficiënties waardoor de Vlaamse biologische landbouw niet het gewenste succes heeft. Om bepaalde problemen binnen de sector op te lossen en te zorgen voor een verdere toename van de productiecapaciteit is het essentieel om een goede afstemming van kennisopbouw, -uitwisseling en -toepassing na te streven. | Organic products form a growing segment of the food market. Recent estimates speak about market shares between 1 to 4.25 per cent. In Belgium the share is only 1 per cent, but the market is growing exponentially. Organic farmers in Belgium often have to sell their products as conventional products because of non-efficient marketing systems. Marketing problems are also mentioned as one of the main reasons by conventional farmers for not converting. Most conventional farmers are not only rather sceptical about the long-term perspectives of getting a price premium for organic products, but consider the organisation of the supply chain as one of the main sources of uncertainty and therefore as a constraint for conversion. | Het initiatief voor dit boek is gegroeid uit een samenwerkingsverband tussen de Universiteit Gent Vakgroep Landbouweconomie, Faculteit Bio-ingenieurswetenschappen) en het Centrum voor Landbouweconomie (wetenschappelijke instelling van het Ministerie van de Vlaamse Gemeenschap) en het resultaat van diverse onderzoeksprojecten die voor het grootste gedeelte gefinancierd werden met IWT- middelen. Een derde partner is het voormalige Expertisecentrum agro-ecologische ontwikkeling (BLIVO) dat met veldexpertise een belangrijke toetssteen bood voor de wetenschappelijke analyses. | Networks are considered to gain potential for supporting innovation. To understand how networks can maximally support the grower’s innovation process, a conceptual framework was constructed based on five dimensions: (i) creative idea generation, (ii) knowledge assemblage, (iii) learning process, (iv) coalition building and (v) institutional innovation. This paper explores how recently established networks for creating and exchanging knowledge in organic horticulture in Flanders can contribute to the innovation capacity of the organic horticultural community.
