Kalyptorhynchia (Plathelminthes Rhabdocoela) from the Kenyan Coast, with descriptions of four new species OMA
Jouk, P.E.H.; De Vocht, A.J.-P..
Sandy sediments and algae from the littoral and sublittoral zone of the coast near Mombasa were sampled. Eighteen species of Kalyptorhynchia were collected, of which four new species of Schizorhynchia are described here, two Cheliplana species, one Baltoplana sp. and one Carcharodorhynchus sp. Cheliplana asica terminalis Brunet 1968 described from the Mediterranean and also recorded from Somalia was found as well. Five out of 13 species of Eukalyptorhynchia were already recorded from Somalia. Polycystis ali Schockaert 1982, P. subcontorta Schockaert 1982 and Cinturorhynchus karlingi Schockaert 1982 were newly described from...

The anatomy and ultrastructure of the proboscis in Zonorhynchus-species and implications for phylogenetic relationships within the Eukalyptorhynchia Meixner, 1928 (Platyhelminthes, Rhabdocoela) OMA
De Vocht, A.J.-P.; Schockaert, E.R..
The ultrastructural morphology of the proboscis in species of the genus Zonorhynchus Karling, 1952 is investigated. The proboscis epithelia are organized in four belts. The apical cone epithelium has intra-epithelial nuclei, and the distal belt of the sheath epithelium is formed by numerous cells lacking a distinct pattern. Multiciliary receptors are lacking. The diversity in ultrastructural data on the proboscis is used to elucidate the phylogenetic relationships within the Cicerinidae and Eukalyptorhynchia. A bipartite cone epithelium as found in Zonorhynchus-species is a common feature for all eukalyptorhynch species investigated. A syncytial basal cone epithelium is a synapomorphic character for all species except...

Ultrastructure of the proboscis in Cystiplanidae, (Plathelminthes, Kalyptorhynchia) OMA
De Vocht, A.J.-P..
The fine structure of the proboscis epithelia and musculature of the kalyptorhynchs Cystiplex axi and Cystiplana paradoxa is described. The epithelia are divided into one cellular and four syncytial belts. The former lines the distal part of the cavity and in both species contains a circular groove which has ciliary receptors with modified axonemata. Apart from this cellular belt, two syncytial belts and a part of the belt covering the basal part of the cone form the sheath epithelium. The first two belts of the sheath epithelium, characterised by infoldings of the basal plasma membrane, have intra-epithelial nuclei. The proximal belt lining the cavity is characterised by numerous piercing gland necks. The cone is...

Ultrastructure and organisation of the proboscis epithelia in Cicerina remanei Meixner, 1928. (Turbellaria, Eukalyptorhynchia) OMA
De Vocht, A.J.-P.; Schockaert, E.R..
Ultrastructural data on the proboscis epithelia of Eukalyptorhynchia have been given by Rieger and Sterrer (1975) for Bertiliellidae, by Doe (1976) for Gnathorhynchidae, by Reuter (1975) and Schockaert and Bedini (1977) for Polycystididae. Only the latter authors dealt with the overall organization of the epithelia in the proboscis, and this for Polycystis naegelii. The anatomy of the proboscis is indeed an important element in the taxonomy of the Eukalyptorhynchia. It is to be expected that the ultrastructure will provide further clues to indicate phylogenetic relationships between the major taxa in Eukalyptorhynchia when more data become available. In view of further comparative studies on the ultrastructure of the proboscis of...

The ultrastructure of the proboscis in Psammorhynchus tubulipenis Karling, 1964 and Cytocystis clitellatus Karling, 1953 (Platyhelminthes, Rhabdocoela) OMA
De Vocht, A.J.-P..
The ultrastructural organization of the proboscis in two species of free-living Platyhelminthes, Psammorhynchus tubulipenis and Cytocystis clitellatus is very alike but differs from previously described species. Both sheath and cone epithelium are composed of two circumferential belts. Only the basal cone epithelium is syncytial, while no nuclei were found in the distal belt of the sheath epithelium. The sheath epithelium is characterized by numerous infoldings of the basal plasma membrane. The nuclei present in the bulb belong to the proximal belt of the sheath epithelium and the apical cone epithelium. Nuclei of the basal cone epithelium are located insunk behind the proboscis bulb. The insunk cell parts pierce the...
