This document presents an analysis of the fishing fleet operating in the Southern Bay of Biscay, based on vessel characteristics and records of fishing activities during 1986, using multivariate ordination techniques. It reveals groups of vessels having similar fishing patterns with regard to utilization of various gears, areas fished and species caught. The results have potential interest for fisheries biologists, and also for economists and regional or national managers. An assessment of the sommon sole stock in the Bay of Biscay is presented, based on Jones's cohort analysis method on length composition data (1974) according to a computer program set up by De Verdelhan (1980). The results show that for the present fishing pattern, Fmax is overpassed and that a reduction of fishing effort would be necessary to come back to it. Furthermore, an increase in mesh-size of trawlers without modifying the shrimp fishery would lead to only small long-term benefits (15% maximum): the effect of shrimp trawling on the whole sole fishery appears to be very important. One the one hand, the cod, Gadus morhua, spawning during winter, one the other hand, the meagre, Argyrosomus regius and Senegalese sole, Solea senegalensis, spawning during summer were more numeros than usual. There are probably connections berween their higher relative abundance and temperatures of colder last winters, for the cod, and warmer summers, for the two other fishes. One witch, Glyptocephalus cynoglossus were caught in the south of 46°N. One double-headed foetus of spur-dog, Squalus acanthias is recorded. They give data on the distribution of T. atlanticus in the Atlantic and of E. brucus and N. ductor in the Bay of Biscay. They give data also on the catches of Zenopsis conchifer, Cyclopterus lumpus, Gadus morhua and Nesiarchus nasutus. To assess the potential fishery for Pandalus borealis, the R/V `CRYOS' made cruises, in 1970 off SW Newfoundland and in 1971 off Nova Scotia. The trenches where Pandalus is found and the 3 types of trawl (large mouth, balloon and flat) are described. Details of size of catches and of individuals, and also of fish species caught are given. Prawn stocks in these grounds seem to match those of grounds already being exploited. Significant fish catches may also be expected (e.g. skate, herring and cod).
