The role of structuring benthos for juvenile flatfish ArchiMer

Within coastal nurseries, the distribution of juvenile flatfish may depend on small-scale habitat variability. The presence of ecosystem engineers is known to have important impacts in coastal sediments. Lanice conchilega is a well-known marine ecosystem engineer of shallow soft bottom ecosystems, shaping the macrobenthic community and attracting flatfish. The present study examines the relation between juvenile flatfish and L conchilega reefs through two experiments. In a field experiment in the Dutch part of the North Sea, the benthic habitat is evaluated by comparing relative differences in numbers of juvenile flatfish between ecosystem engineered habitats and adjacent bare sand (i.e. non-ecosystem engineered) habitats. The macrozoobenthos of an important wintering area of the common scoter (<i>Melanitta nigra</i>) OMA

In October 1994, 39 macrobenthic samples, divided between two areas, were taken on the western Belgian Coastal Banks. The two areas could not be clearly divided, concerning their macrobenthic communities. Intertidal zonation of macroinfauna on a dissipative, sandy beach at De Panne (Belgium): a pilot study OMA

To elucidate vertical (= from high to low water mark) macroinfaunal community patterns on little-studied Belgian dissipative sandy beaches, macroinfauna was sampled at eight stations along a seaward transect at De Panne. Mean sand particle size was 196 µm, and the beach slope was ca. 1 : 90. Nineteen species were collected (excluding non-quantitatively sampled species), nine of which were polychaetes and eight were crustaceans. Total macroinfaunal abundance per station ranged from 103 to 585 ind./ m². Polychaetes and crustaceans were numerically dominant, comprising more than 98% of total numbers. Community structure and intertidal zonation of the macrobenthos on a macrotidal, ultra-dissipative beach were studied. On the beach of De Panne, Belgium, six transects perpendicular to the waterline (each with five stations) were sampled in September 1995 (summer) and March 1996 (winter). The 30 stations were distributed across the continuum from mean high water spring to mean low water spring in order to sample the macrobenthos at different levels of elevation. The 39 species found had total densities up to 5,500 ind m<sup>-2</sup> in summer and 1,400 ind m<sup>-2</sup> in winter.
