Estimates of dry and wet deposition and resuspension fluxes of several trace metals in the Southern Bight of the North Sea OMA
Dedeurwaerder, H.L.; Dehairs, F.A.; Decadt, G.; Baeyens, W.F.J..
In this study we have investigated air-sea exchanges in the Belgian coastal area located in the Southern Bight of the North Sea. Since 1980 the tropospheric aerosol contents for the trace elements Cd, Cu, Mn, Pb, Zn and for the reference elements Al , Fe, Na have been monitored on an intermittent basis from a maritime sampling platform (Light-Vessel West-Hinder; position: 51°23.5'N- 2°21.5'E, fig. 1). During 1981 sampling campaigns at sea were paralleled by sampling campaigns on land, in the coastal area (natural reserve De Blankaert, located at 20 Km inland), in order to allow for a better evaluation of the specific source or sink role of the sea. No major source of pollution exists between the maritime and the continental sampling sites. During these...

The biological production of marine suspended barite and the barium cycle in the Western Mediterranean Sea OMA
Dehairs, F.A.; Lambert, C.E.; Chesselet, R.; Risler, N..
Suspended particulate barium was measured in the Western Mediterranean along 4 profiles sampled during the PHYCEMED 1 cruise in 1981. The non-terrigenous fraction of particulate barium (i.e. excess Ba; Baxs) can account for up to 96 % of the total barium. This fraction follows the barite settling and dissolution rate model we described earlier for the Atlantic Ocean, conforming barite as the carrier of excess barium. We propose that these Baxs concentrations, which are higher in the Western Mediterranean than in the overall Atlantic, may represent an adaptation of the microplankton to the high densities and density gradients of surface Mediterranean waters. A mass-balance for Ba in the Mediterranean Sea shows:...

Advective excess Ba transport as shown from sediment and trap geochemical signatures OMA
Fagel, N.; André, L.; Dehairs, F.A..
We report the results of a geochemical study of sediment and trap material. Major and trace elements (Zr, Ba, rare earth elements, and Th) were analyzed on bulk sedimentary material collected along the NE Atlantic margin. Our aim is to test the widespread use of Ba-barite as a proxy for paleoproductivity in a continental margin area. This environment is of great interest because atmospheric-oceanic exchanges are important. In sediments, the geochemical signatures remain close to an upper crust reference, with flat shale-normalized rare earth elements patterns and constant elementary ratios. The calculated biogenic fraction of Ba or excess Ba (20-45%) remains lower than the excess Ba record in trap material (80-99%). The evolution of the geochemical...

Phytoplankton nitrogen nutrition in the western Indian Ocean: Ecophysiological adaptations of neritic and oceanic assemblages to ammonium supply OMA
Mengesha, S.; Dehairs, F.A.; Elskens, M.; Goeyens, L..
The nitrogen nutrition of the phytoplankton community in the neritic and oceanic waters of the western Indian Ocean was investigated during the south-east monsoon (June-July) and intermonsoon periods (November-December). The region is very oligotrophic, characterized by very low nutrient concentrations (surface NO sub(3)<0.5 µM), low phytoplankton biomass (PON similar to 0.85 µmoll super(- 1)) and predominance of regenerated production (maximum f -ratio <0.47). Ammonium was the major nitrogen substrate during the two seasons, supplying 53-99% of the phytoplankton's nitrogen requirement. Nevertheless, both the uptake of nitrate and its relative contribution to total nitrogen removal (f -ratio) were significantly higher during the intermonsoon period...

The leading role of ammonium in the nitrogen uptake regime of Southern Ocean marginal ice zones OMA
Goeyens, L.; Dehairs, F.A.; Tréguer, P.; Bauman, E.M.; Baeyens, W.F.J..
The nitrogen signature of marginal ice zones in the Southern Ocean often departs from the "classical" Antarctic nutrient profiles with high nitrate and low ammonium values in the surface layer. Weddell Sea marginal ice zones e.g. show enhanced nitrate depletions, amounting to similar to 500 mmol N m super(-2). Additionally, ammonium stocks in the upper layer can be up to 7% of the inorganic nitrogen pool. The corresponding nitrogen uptake regime suggests elevated nitrate assimilation during the early phase of the productive season and significantly reduced nitrate assimilation at a later stage. Absolute as well as specific nitrate uptake rates decrease by an order of magnitude when ammonium stocks exceed 1.7% of the total inorganic nitrogen. The...

Discrete suspended particles of barite and the barium cycle in the open ocean OMA
Dehairs, F.A.; Chesselet, R.; Jedwab, J..
Barite particles are a universal component of suspended matter in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. This is demonstrated by scanning electron microscope and electron microprobe analyses of samples collected during the GEOSECS program. These discrete particles, about 1 µm in diameter, account for by far the greatest part of the total particulate barium of most of the filters collected at different depths. Total particulate barium (mean value: 20 ng/kg seawater) was measured on the same filters by instrumental neutron activation analysis.Several observations indicate that biochemical, rather than purely chemical, processes are involved in the formation of the BaSO4 mineral in the water column. Sr/Ba molar ratios among the individual barite grains,...

Improved estimation of f-ratio in natural phytoplankton assemblages OMA
Elskens, M.; Goeyens, L.; Dehairs, F.A.; Rees, A.; Joint, I.; Baeyens, J..
Statistical properties in non-linear regression models of <i>f</i>-ratio versus nitrate relationships were investigated using a case study conducted at the European continental margin (Project OMEX). Although the OMEX data fit within the family of empirical models introduced by Platt and Harrison (1985) Nature 318, 55&#x2013;58), it is shown that the discrepancy between experimental and fitted values is larger than expected, assuming that the data are accurate. Since the ambient ammonium concentration plays a leading role in regulating new production, the present analysis was extended to include explicitly the effect of ammonium on <i>f</i>-ratio versus nitrate plots. Experimental results based on controlled ammonium additions...

Distribution of particulate trace elements in the Northeastern Atlantic OMA

From 1989 to 1992, five cruises were conducted in an area covering the English Channel, the Celtic Sea and the Gulf of Biscay. During these campaigns, suspended matter was collected by different techniques in order to analyze the spatial and vertical distribution of several particulate trace elements in relation to the global biogeochemical cycle of carbon. It appears that horizontal distribution varies strongly from one element to another and is mainly influenced either by anthropogenic and terrigenous inputs or by scavenging processes. On the other hand, the vertical distribution seems mainly linked to the primary production. In parallel to these trace element measurements, experiments were carried out to estimate the transfer rates of these elements...

Determination of barium in sea water by cation-exchange separation and electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry OMA
Dehairs, F.A.; Hoenig, M.; De Bondt, M.; Baeyens, J.; Van Den Winkel, P..
A method is described for the routine determination of barium in sea water by graphite-furnace atomic absorption spectrometry. Barium is separated from the main seawater cations by collection on a cation-exchange resin. The barium is extracted into nitric acid from a portion of the resin for injection into the pyrolytically-coated graphite furnace. The method is satisfactory for the low µg l-1 levels of barium present in ocean water, with recoveries more or equal to 99% and a relative standard deviation of <5%.

An automated method for the assessment of mercury adsorption rates on particulate suspended matter OMA
Baeyens, W.F.J.; Decadt, G.; Dehairs, F.A.; Goeyens, L..
A continuous filtration system connected to a mercury auto-analyzer has been constructed for obtaining mercury adsorption rates on particulate suspended matter. The capabilities of this device have been demonstrated by carrying out a series of experiments under controlled physicochemical parameter conditions on samples of the Scheldt estuary. Duplicate measurements showed coefficients of variation ranging from 1 to 6 %. Depending on the physico-chemical conditions, the initial adsorption rate per unit of dissolved mercury concentration varied between 1.2 and 8.1 x 10-2 mn-1.
