The bacterial community structure in an alkaline saline soil spiked with anthracene Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Castro-Silva,Carolina; Ruíz-Valdiviezo,Víctor M; Valenzuela-Encinas,César; Alcántara-Hernández,Rocio J; Navarro-Noya,Yendi E; Vázquez-Núñez,Edgar; Luna-Guido,Marco; Marsch,Rodolfo; Dendooven,Luc.
Background: The application of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) will affect the bacterial community structure as some groups will be favoured and others not. An alkaline saline soil with electrolytic conductivity (EC) 56 dS m-1 was spiked with anthracene and acetone while their effect on bacterial community structure was investigated. Results: The percentages of Acidobacteria and Actinobacteria decreased over time, while the percentage of Proteobacteria, mostly Xanthomonadales, increased. The percentage of the phylotypes belonging to the Nocardioides, Rhodococcus and Streptomyces, known degraders of PAHs, was larger in the anthracene-amended soil than in the acetone-amended and unamended soil at day 14. The phylotypes belonging to the genera...

Optimization of worm-bed leachate for culturing of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill) inoculated with Glomus fasciculatum and Pseudomonas fluorescens Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Oliva-Llaven,María Ángela; Rodríguez-Hernández,Ludwi; Mendoza-Nazar,Paula; Ruiz-Sesma,Benigno; Álvarez-Solís,José David; Dendooven,Luc; Gutiérrez-Miceli,Federico A.
A response surface technique was used to analyze the effect of Glomus fasciculatum, Pseudomonas fluorescens and worm-bed leachate (WBL) on growth, yield and characteristics of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill). The treatments combined inoculation with or without P. fluorescensor G. fasciculatum and the application of WBL at 20% (v/v) each day or every three days. Plant height, number of leaves and yield of tomato fruits was not affected by the factors studied. However, plants with foliar application of WBL each day developed wider stems than those with an application every three days. The pH of the fruits was lower when WBL was applied every three days compared to a daily application. The soluble solids content of the fruits was higher when WBL was...

Effect of vermicompost, worm-bed leachate and arbuscular mycorrizal fungi on lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus (DC) Stapf.) growth and composition of its essential oil Electron. J. Biotechnol.
León-Anzueto,Elizabeth; Abud-Archila,Miguel; Dendooven,Luc; Ventura-Canseco,Lucía María Cristina; Gutiérrez-Miceli,Federico A.
The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of vermicompost, worm-bed leachate (WBL) and Glomus mosseae, an arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), on growth of lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus (DC.) Stapf). A response surface methodology, i.e. a three-level Box Benhen design with three repetitions and three blocks, was applied to optimize biomass production, essential oil yield and its composition. Application rates of Glomus mosseae were 0, 1 or 2 g plant-1, vermicompost 0, 5 or 10 g plant-1 and WBL 0, 10 and 20%. The AMF had no significant effect on the variables tested, but vermicompost had a significant effect on essential oil yield and WBL on essential oil yield, myercene concentration and shoot dry weigh (p < 0.05). It was found that...

Oliva,María A; Rincón,Reiner; Zenteno,Eucario; Pinto,Arturo; Dendooven,Luc; Gutiérrez,Federico.

INFLUENCE OF ARBUSCULAR MYCORRHIZAL FUNGIES AND A NATIVE DIAZOTROPHIC BACTERIA IN SURVIVAL AND TUBERIZATION OF EX VITRO POTATO PLANTS Gayana Botánica
Palacios,Gabriela; Abud,Miguel; Salvador,Miguel; Adriano,Lourdes; Dendooven,Luc; Gutiérrez,Federico Antonio.
The inoculation of several species of micropropagated plantlets with native diazotrophic bacteria and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi has been reported to increase growth and survival percentage compared to plantlets without inoculation. The survival of in vitro developed potato (Solarium tuberosum L. cv. Alfa) plantlets co-inoculated with Glomus fasciculatum (Thaxter sensu Gerd.) Gerd & Trappe, G. claroideum (Schenck & Smith emend. Walker & Vestberg) and a native diazotrophic bacteria was evaluated at room temperature (16-35°C) or in a growth chamber (20-22°C). Obtained plantlets for micropropagation were placed in a peat moss/agrolite (2:1 v/v) mixture, inoculated with arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi (2250 spores plant"') and...

Dynamics of 14C-labeled glucose and ammonium in saline arable soils Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Vuelvas-Solórzano,Alma; Hernández-Matehuala,Rosalina; Conde-Barajas,Eloy; Luna-Guido,Marco L.; Dendooven,Luc; Cárdenas-Manríquez,Marcela.
Organic matter dynamics and nutrient availability in saline agricultural soils of the State of Guanajuato might provide information for remediation strategies. 14C labeled glucose with or without 200 mg kg-1 of NH4+-N soil was added to two clayey agricultural soils with different electrolytic conductivity (EC), i.e. 0.94 dS m-1 (low EC; LEC) and 6.72 dS m-1 (high EC; HEC), to investigate the effect of N availability and salt content on organic material decomposition. Inorganic N dynamics and production of CO2 and 14CO2 were monitored. Approximately 60 % of the glucose-14C added to LEC soil evolved as 14CO2, but only 20 % in HEC soil after the incubation period of 21 days. After one day, < 200 mg 14C was extractable from LEC soil, but > 500 mg 14C...

Emission of nitrous oxide and carbon dioxide from semi-arid tropical soils in Chiapas México Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Ponce-Mendoza,Alejandro; Ceballos-Ramírez,Juan Manuel; Gutierrez-Micelli,Federico; Dendooven,Luc.
The semi-arid region of Chiapas is dominated by N2 -fixing shrubs, e.g., Acacia angustissima. Urea-fertilized soil samples under maize were collected from areas covered and uncovered by A. angustissima in different seasons and N2O and CO2 emissions were monitored. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of urea and of the rainy and dry season on gas emissions from semi-arid soil under laboratory conditions. Urea and soil use had no effect on CO2 production. Nitrons oxide emission from soil was three times higher in the dry than in the rainy season, while urea fertilization doubled emissions. Emissions were twice as high from soil sampled under A. angustissima canopy than from arable land, but 1.2 lower than from soil sampled outside the...
