Their reproduction period, early stages and biology are known through previous works (cf. especially the works by L. Bianco (1), R. S. Clark (2), Ehrenbaum (3), etc.). On the contrary, their growth and longevity, their age and size when reaching their first sexual maturity, the variation of the number of their vertebrae, are, to our knowledge, not or hardly known. We aimed to fill this gap, at least partially, with this work. Concurrently, we made an inventory of the North Atlantic stock over the winter 1932-1933. |

The Lisbon Commission had decided, in 1930, that the laboratory of the Marine Fisheries Scientific and Technical Office of Lorient will take part in the study of the sardine on the French Atlantic coast. Following are the results obtained in 1932 on the sardine caught with salted cod-roe. This work is the continuation of those published in this journal by J. Le Gall (1) for the coasts of Brittany and of the English Channel, and by G. Belloc (2) for the area located between the Loire and the Gironde rivers. Our studied area stretches from the mouth of the Loire, to the South, to the city of Concarneau, to the North. |

The bluntnose sixgill shark is a shark which is easily recognizable through its six gill slits and the presence of a single dorsal fin with a posterior insertion. This shark cruises the waters of the Atlantic Ocean: to the West, it has been observed near Cuba; to the East, it cruises from the coasts of Mauritania, the Canaries and Madeira, to the Mediterranean Sea, the eastern entrance of the English Channel and more rarely in the North Sea. The Saint-Pierre or John Dory (Zeus faber L.) abounds on the West coast of Africa. Its presence in the waters of Madeira has been noticed as early as 1837 by Lowe (2); in the Canaries in 1844, by Valenciennes (4), and later by Steindachner (6), then Vinciguerra (8). It has been observed as far as the Azores (cf. Fowler (25), p. 1 262). In 1906 Pietschmann (11) reported its presence on the Moroccan coast (Mogador, Agadir. Azamor). Between the White Cape and Dakar, Gruvel and Bouyat (1906.10) reported that local fishermen trawl fish the "rose or poisson de Saint-Pierre (Zeus faber)". Pellegrin (1907.12) observed it in Rufisque and Dakar. Studying the area located between Saint-Louis and Bissao, the professor Gruvel (1908,13) reports the presence on the rocky... |

Among the North and Western European countries, France is the one that fishes whiting the most: in 1937, our fishermen caught 36% of the total tonnage. In the same year, France is followed by Scotland with 18%. According to the Department of Merchant Navy, in 1937, 26,813 tons of whiting (worth 70 millions Francs) were unloaded in French harbours. These figures represent a thirteenth of the total tonnage of sea fish unloaded in France. From this point of view, whiting comes after cod, herring and sardine, but before hake and mackerel. Tonnagewise, whiting is the fourth French fish. In 1937, North Sea and Channel French harbours received 21,918 tons of whiting, the third largest tonnage after cod and herring for this coast. The Atlantic coast harbours... |

We presented in a previous work our results on the growth, longevity, size and age of the first sexual maturity, and the vertebral formula of the North Atlantic goatfish, obtained in 1933. Its growth has been calculated based on the position of the winter striate on the scale (Lea method) and checked using the frequency chart of the sizes measured in the winter (Petersen method). We aimed to find a confirmation of these data on the growth and the migrations of the species through marking. |
