Long-term variability of the Abra alba community in the southern bight of the North Sea ArchiMer
Carpenter, P; Dewarumez, Jm; Lepretre, A.
The Abra alba community from the Gravelines area has been studied since 1976. During this period, sudden and unpredictable variations of the species composition have been observed. These important changes affect a limited number of species without changing the bionomical structure of the community. The species in question are found to be characteristic of this community, and are the more abundant ones. Multivariate statistical methods were used to study quantitative data on the benthic population collected from 1978 to 1992. This analysis was performed in association with air temperature data. Results showed the existence of a six- or seven-year cycle, and this is confirmed by the observation of two complete periods. This cycle, which is found to be...

Long-term changes (1979-1994) in two coastal benthic communities (English Channel): analysis of structural developments ArchiMer
Davoult, D; Dewarumez, Jm; Migne, A.
The long-term variations of two coastal benthic communities (Eastern English Channel, France) were studied between 1979 and 1994 by means of factor correspondence analysis (FCA), trophic structure and rank-frequency diagrams (RFD). FCA identified periods of relative homogeneity and periods of strong variation in the structure of the two communities. The first community, established on heterogeneous sand, showed a multi-annual cycle Linked to grain-size variations in the sediment. As passive supplies of organic matter were not important and suspension feeders could hardly live in these conditions, the community remained poor and stable and was dominated by deposit-feeders and carnivores. The other one, a rich and diverse mussel (Mytilus edulis) bed, showed...

The influence of tidal-induced variability on the distribution of meroplankton larvae in the Southern Bight of the North Sea ArchiMer
Belgrano, A; Dewarumez, Jm.
Tidal currents proved to be the major force determining the changes in the density distribution of meroplankton larvae in the Southern Eight of the North Sea. Path analysis showed that the larvae are strongly correlated with the tide and with tide-coupled environmental factors. Hydrodynamic processes and physical advective factors exert a strong control over meroplankton pattern distribution at different scales.

Influence of spatial scales of observation on temporal change in diversity and trophic structure of fine-sand communities from the English Channel and the southern North Sea ArchiMer
Ghertsos, K; Luczak, C; Dewarumez, Jm; Dauvin, Jc.
Along the coast of France in the English Channel, muddy fine-sand communities are restricted to bays and estuaries, but in the southern North Sea they stretch out to larger areas (mesoscale continuum). We studied three regions containing these communities, each subject to different hydrological conditions and contrasting trophic structures of the water column. The Bay of Morlaix was strongly affected by the "Amoco Cadiz" oil spill of 1978 and recovered slowly. The Bay of Seine is influenced by high levels of nutrient input from the River Seine. A retention structure exists in the eastern part ensuring recruitment stability. The Gravelines area in the southern North Sea was invaded by the American jackknife clam (Ensis directus), which became a key species...
