In order to examine the response of the surface flow to the regime in the Gibraltar Strait, the Alboran Sea is modelled in a large rotating channel mounted on the 14 m ''Coriolis'' rotating platform. The channel is divided into two basins connected by a strait. The currents are initialized and maintained constant in time by pumps. When flowing out of the strait, the Atlantic current forms an anticyclonic gyre in the Mediterranean basin. This gyre is related to the Western Alboran Sea Gyre and can develop until its diameter is as large as the width of the basin. Depending on the parameters, the flow exhibits different configurations, which we are able to characterize with the use of tracers (food dye, floats). A very consistent result is that the flow seems... |

Some experiments have been made with the large rotating tank at the Institut de Mecanique de Grenoble to reproduce a sinusoidal flow along a vertical wall, over a flat bottom, with or without slope, in a homogeneous fluid. The objective of these experiments was to simulate a tidal motion, restricted to its main harmonic component M2, parallel to a vertical coast; and to demonstrate a particular mode of generation of residual circulation near the coast as a result of the interaction between friction, background rotation of the system (Ekman pumping) and oscillatory motion (Stokes effects). Moreover, the stabilizing (or otherwise) effects of the Earth's rotation on this shear flow may modify the rectification process. The configuration is in a good agreement... |

The present paper describes the major results obtained from 1989 to 1992 by the EUROMODEL group in studying the circulation in the Western Mediterranean Sea. Particular emphasis has been given to the physical processes responsible for seasonal and mesoscale variabilities. Observations (in situ and satellite), together with theoretical, physical and numerical models, have been widely used in the course of these studies. Attention has been focused on the dynamics of the northern basin (deep water formation, dynamics of the Northern Mediterranean Current, circulation and shelf/slope interaction in the Balearic Sea) and of the southern basin (Alboran Sea circulation, instabilities of the Algerian Current). The straits dynamics have been studied with particular... |
