Fire, logging and establishment patterns of second-growth forests in south-central Chile: implications for their management and restoration Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
González,Mauro E; Szejner,Paul; Donoso,Pablo J; Salas,Christian.
Second-growth forests represent the greatest potential resource for forest management and large-scale ecological restoration in many regions. In south-central Chile, second-growth forests include those dominated by Nothofagus obliqua, N. dombeyi, Drimys winteri, and a mixture of evergreen species, especially hardwoods. This article examines the influence of fire and logging on the establishment patterns and development of second-growth forests in south-central Chile. We characterize the size structure and composition of these four types of forests with sampling plots. The identification of the type of disturbance and its date of occurrence was determined from evidence such as fire scars and even-aged pulses of tree establishment. The size, structure and...

Early individual growth of Eucryphia cordifolia and Laurelia sempervirens planted under different competition conditions in south-central Chile Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Uteau,Daniel; Donoso,Pablo J.
Few studies have focused on forest research in plantations with Chilean native species midtolerant to shade. Such species may use resources that intolerant species cannot, increasing the total site productivity. This study aimed to define the factors that explain the growth of Euctyphia cordifolia Cav. and Laurelia sempervirens (Ruiz et Pavón) Tul., two midtolerant species of southern Chile. We sought to determine the effect on these species of competition in mixed-species plantations. At the time of this study, the plantations were 4 to 22 years old . Two competition indices were analyzed for each species: the Growing Space Polygon (GSP) and the Canopy Overlap (CO). The GSP proved to be very useful in predicting the growth in the older plantations where...

Effects of early fertilization on the performance of Nothofagus dombeyi planted in the Coastal Range of south-central Chile Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Donoso,Pablo J; Soto,Daniel P; Schlatter,Juan E; Büchner,Carlos A.
Native Nothofagus dombeyi growth rates excel in secondary forests and in some plantations, and the species has good timber quality. However, few have reported on the effects of fertilization on N. dombeyi plantations. This is a key matter since fertilization has environmental and financial costs, and therefore its use to increase growth and survival for production or restoration must be carefully evaluated. Here we evaluated the early effects of fertilization (control and three levels) using several performance variables (leaf properties, growth, plant quality, and survival) in a N. dombeyi plantation at a low elevation in the Coastal Range of south-central Chile, which has a rainy temperate climate and medium fertility soils. Four years after plantation...

Determination of homogeneous edaphoclimatic zones for the secondary forests of Nothofagus dombeyi in central-southern Chile Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Esse,Carlos; Donoso,Pablo J; Gerding,Víctor; Encina-Montoya,Francisco.
C. Esse, PJ. Donoso, V. Gerding, and F. Encina-Montoya. 2013. Determination of homogeneous edaphoclimatic zones for the secondary forests of Nothofagus dombeyi in central-southern Chile. Cien. Inv. Agr. 40(2): 351-360. Nothofagus dombeyi grows in a wide variety of sites in Chile (30-47°S), but there is little knowledge about its productive potential. This lack of information hinders decision-making to better guide the production of goods and services from these forests. This study was conducted in central-southern Chile (39°S-41°S), where this species is prominent, especially in secondary forests. The aim of the study was to determine the homogeneous edaphoclimatic zones for secondary forests of N. dombeyi based on the integration of environmental factors....
