Hide and seek in the Bay of Biscaya functional investigation of marine megafauna and small pelagic fish interactions ArchiMer
Lambert, Charlotte; Authier, Matthieu; Doray, Mathieu; Doremus, Ghislain; Spitz, Jerome; Ridoux, Vincent.
Prey and predator distributions influence one another. Understanding the scale and the orientation of predator-prey spatial correlations is crucial in foraging ecology. Growing evidence suggests that predator-prey interactions are more constrained by functional characteristics of both the predator and the prey. Unfortunately, in marine pelagic systems, the scale and orientation of spatial correlations between predators and prey have been only little explored from a functional point of view. We tested the existence of fine-scale association between predators and fish functional groups. Visual predator sightings and acoustic fish records were collected synchronously during oceanographic surveys from 2004 to 2014. Prey biomass was integrated by nautical miles...

Direct assessment of small pelagic fish by the PELGAS16 acoustic survey ArchiMer
Duhamel, Erwan; Doray, Mathieu; Huret, Martin; Sanchez, Florence; Lespagnol, Patrick; Doremus, Ghislain; Lemerre, Charlotte.
The Pelgas16 acoustic survey has been carried out with very good weather conditions (regular low wind, medium temperatures) for the whole area, from the South of the bay of Biscay to the west of Brittany. The help of commercial vessels (two pairs of pelagic trawlers and a single one) during 18 days provided about 120 valid identification hauls instead of about 60 before 2007 when Thalassa was alone to identify echotraces. Their participation increased the precision of identification of echoes and some double hauls permitted to confirm that results provided by the two types of vessels (R/V and Fishing boats) were comparable and usable for biomass estimate purposes. These commercial vessels participated to the PELGAS survey in a very good spirit of...

Favorites and leftovers on the menu of scavenging seabirds: modelling spatio-temporal variation in discard consumption ArchiMer
Depestele, Jochen; Rochet, Marie-joelle; Doremus, Ghislain; Laffargue, Pascal; Stienen, Eric Willem Maria.
Fishery discards subsidise the food supply of a large community of scavenging seabirds, thus significantly influencing seabird ecology. Seabird preference for certain types of discards determines the number and composition of discards available for non-avian marine scavengers. To quantify both portions of discards temporally as well as spatially, we have used a modelling framework that integrates the spatial and temporal variation in seabird distribution, seabird attraction to fishing vessels and discard distribution. The framework was applied to a case study in the Bay of Biscay, where a wide variation in discard consumption was observed across seabird foraging guilds, discard types, periods and locations. Seabirds removed about one-quarter of the Bay of...

Can modelling the drift of bycaught dolphin stranded carcasses help identify involved fisheries? An exploratory study ArchiMer
Peltier, Hélène; Dabin, Willy; Dars, Cécile; Demaret, Fabien; Doremus, Ghislain; Van Canneyt, Olivier; Laran, Sophie; Mendez-fernadez, Paula; Spitz, Jérôme; Authier, Matthieu; Delphine, Pierre; Ridoux, Vincent.
Between the 1st of February and the March 31, 2017, 793 stranded cetaceans were found along the French Atlantic coasts. Common dolphins made up 84% of these strandings, and most of these presented evidence of death in fishing gear. The aim of this work is to test an approach that could help identify the fisheries potentially involved in a given stranding event. To do this we examined how the distributions of likely areas of mortality of bycaught dolphins, inferred from carcass drift modelling, coincide with fishing effort statistics of various fleets, generated from the Vessel Monitoring System, in the area over the same dates. Using reverse drift modelling, two main mortality areas were identified. A total of 3690 common dolphins (IC95% [2230; 6900]) were...

Exploring Change in the Relative Abundance of Marine Megafauna in the Bay of Biscay, 2004-2016 ArchiMer
Authier, Matthieu; Doremus, Ghislain; Van Canneyt, Olivier; Boubert, Jean-jacques; Gautier, Gerard; Doray, Mathieu; Duhamel, Erwan; Masse, Jacques; Petitgas, Pierre; Ridoux, Vincent; Spitz, Jerome.
Conservation has moved from species-centered to ecosystem-based approaches: the Marine Strategy Framework Directive requires the maintenance or restoration of ‘Good Environmental Status’ of all European marine waters. Monitoring biodiversity at the scale of whole ecosystems is salient, but challenging owing to the large spatial scale involved and the large spatio-temporal heterogeneity of marine ecosystems. We capitalized on the integrated ecosystemic PELGAS survey carried out in spring in the Bay of Biscay to document patterns of change in marine megafauna relative abundance at the community level over more than a decade (2004-2016). The relative abundance of the twenty three most frequently sighted species (6 cetaceans and 17 seabirds) was estimated by...

Manual of fisheries survey protocols. PELGAS surveys (PELagiques GAScogne) ArchiMer
Doray, Mathieu; Badts, Vincent; Masse, Jacques; Duhamel, Erwan; Huret, Martin; Doremus, Ghislain; Petitgas, Pierre.
The PELGAS sea cruises aim at monitoring the Bay of Biscay pelagic ecosystem, in order to provide scientific data for the implementing of an ecosystemic management of Biscay living ressources. The spatial and temporal dynamics of small pelagic fish populations are specifically monitored, with a focus on anchovy populations. The cruise hence takes place in spring, during anchovy spawning, to allow for the assessment of both eggs and adult stages. The PELGAS ecosystemic cruise aims at collecting data at each level of the Biscay trophic chain. Data are collected continuously along parallel transects covering the whole Bay of Biscay, in order to thoroughly characterize the horizontal and vertical structures of the pelagic ecosystem. Multibeam and...

Fifteen years of data from the PELGAS integrated survey (2000-2015): what have we learned on the Bay of Biscay pelagic ecosystem? ArchiMer
Doray, Mathieu; Petitgas, Pierre; Romagnan, Jean-baptiste; Huret, Martin; Duhamel, Erwan; Dupuy, Christine; Spitz, Jérôme; Authier, Matthieu; Berger, Laurent; Doremus, Ghislain; Bourriau, Paul; Grellier, Patrick; Masse, Jacques; Sanchez, Florence.
The initial focus of the PELGAS integrated survey was to assess the small pelagic fish biomass in the Bay of Biscay in springtime, for fisheries management purposes. Sampling has been extended to produce long-term time-series of spatially-explicit data and indices, describing the main pelagic ecosystem components: hydrology, phytoplankton, mesozooplankton, fish and megafauna. A collaborative analysis of these datasets has brought new insights on the Bay of Biscay pelagic ecosystem summarized here. New results on single ecosystem components include an analysis of water samples to groundtruth the results of an ocean color algorithm aiming at detecting phytoplanktonic coccolithophores. New insights on mesozooplankton spatio-temporal distribution and energy...

Risk assessment reveals high exposure of sea turtles to marine debris in French Mediterranean and metropolitan Atlantic waters ArchiMer
Darmon, Gaelle; Miaud, Claude; Claro, Francoise; Doremus, Ghislain; Galgani, Francois.
Debris impact on marine wildlife has become a major issue of concern. Mainy species have been identified as being threatened by collision, entanglement or ingestion of debris, generally plastics, which constitute the predominant part of the recorded marine debris. Assessing sensitive areas, where exposure to debris are high, is thus crucial, in particular for sea turtles which have been proposed as sentinels of debris levels for the Marine Strategy Framework Directive and for the Unep-MedPol convention. Our objective here was to assess sea turtle exposure to marine debris in the 3 metropolitan French fronts. Using aerial surveys performed in the Channel, the Atlantic and the Mediterranean regions in winter and summer 2011–2012, we evaluated exposure areas...

The PELGAS survey: ship-based integrated monitoring of the Bay of Biscay pelagic ecosystem ArchiMer
Doray, Mathieu; Petitgas, Pierre; Romagnan, Jean-baptiste; Huret, Martin; Duhamel, Erwan; Dupuy, Christine; Spitz, Jerome; Authier, Matthieu; Sanchez, Florence; Berger, Laurent; Doremus, Ghislain; Bourriau, Paul; Grellier, Patrick; Masse, Jacques.
The Pélagiques Gascogne (PELGAS) integrated survey has been developed by a multidisciplinary team of Ifremer and La Rochelle University scientists since 2000, joined by commercial fishermen in 2007. Its initial focus was to assess the biomass and predict the recruitment success of anchovy in the Bay of Biscay in spring. Taking advantage of the space and versatility of R/V Thalassa II, sampling has been progressively extended to other ecosystem components. PELGAS therefore further developed the second objective of monitoring and studying the dynamic and diverse Biscay pelagic ecosystem in springtime. The PELGAS survey model has allowed for the establishment of a long-term time-series of spatially-explicit data of the Bay of Biscay pelagic ecosystem since...
