Long-term stability and mineralisation rate of compost is influenced by timing of nutrient application during composting of plant residues Organic Eprints

The long-term nitrogen mineralization and stability of compost based on easily available plant residues was examined. Four different composts were prepared from wheat straw and clover-grass hay, one treatment receiving all material initially (100/0), two treatments where addition of 75% of the clover-grass was postponed for 3 weeks (75/25,3w) respectively 8 weeks (75/25,8w) and one treatment receiving only 25% of the clover-grass added to the other treatments (25/0). Mineralization and stability of the compost was followed for 24 weeks in leaching tubes, leached regularly by 0.01 M CaCl2. Crop yield, root growth, and nutrient dynamics in a conventional and three organic cropping systems with different levels of external inputs and N re-cycling through fertility building crops Organic Eprints

One core idea behind organic production is that cropping systems should be less dependent on resource import than conventional production and minimize negative environmental effects. This study aimed to test novel organic rotations, designed to reduce reliance on external resource import. We compared a conventional system (C) and an organic system relying on manure import (O1) to two rotations (O2 and O3), both relying on autumn cover crops for soil fertility, and in O3 green manure rows were left as intercrops. Resource import differed between 149, 85, 25 and 25 kg N ha-1 year-1 in C, O1, O2 and O3. Ved produktion af væksthuskulturer er der behov for tilførsel af meget store mængder næring. Da plantenæringsstoffer samtidig er en begrænset ressource i økologisk planteproduktion, kan det være vanskeligt at skaffe tilstrækkelig næring fra økologiske husdyrbrug, hvor gødningen til økologiske væksthuse hovedsagligt kommer fra. I ORCTOM-projektet er næringsmæssig kvalitet og struktur af kompost baseret på lettilgængelige planterester derfor blevet undersøgt.

Introduction Agricultural cropping systems generally have a limited use of water and nutrients from the soil below 1m depth. However, several plant species have much deeper root systems, and if included in cropping systems, these would allow for exploitation of otherwise unused resources from deep soil layers. Resultater fra forsøg med sortsvariation i tidlig rodvækst hos vårhvede, løg og salat. Seks moderne sorter af hver art blev undersøgt, og samlet rodvækst, rodfordeling i jorden og næringsstofoptagelse blev målt. Forsøget viste store sortsforskelle på rodvæksten inden for alle 3 arter.

Structural differences in wheat (Triticum aestivum), hemp (Cannabis sativa) and Mischanthus (Mischanthus ogiformis) affect the quality and stability of compost as growing medium Organic Eprints

Physical properties as well as process parameters were examined in three different composts based on plant residues. The wheat compost was a mixture of clover-grass and wheat straw in a ratio of 3:5, the Mischanthus compost was composed of the same materials and contained Mischanthus straw in addition in a ratio of 3:2.5:2, and the hemp compost was based on clover-grass, wheat and hemp straw also in a ratio of 3:2.5:2. The wheat and Mischanthus composts both had an initial C/N ratio of 26 and process parameters such as nitrogen losses and mineralisation pattern did not differ between the two compost types. Delayed nutrient application affects mineralisation rate during composting of plant residues Organic Eprints

The hypothesis that delayed addition of nutrient rich material to compost would influence the mineralisation pattern was investigated by studying N turnover in compost based on wheat straw and clover-grass hay. After 7½ weeks of composting almost twice as much N was mineralised when the addition of of some of the N-rich clover-grass hay was postponed, suggesting that this influenced the microbial succession. The delayed addition resulted in a second temperature peak and a decline in the pH. Despite the altered conditions no significant effect was observed on the weight loss or loss of C and N. Determining deep root activity in arable fields by the core-labelling technique (CLT) Organic Eprints

The aim of this study was to develop a method, the Core-Labelling Technique (CLT), to measure root activity down to 2.5 m of soil depth under field conditions. Materials and Methods: Two stainless steel ingrowth-cores, 0.1 m in diameter and 0.55 m in length, were filled with soil labelled with nutrient tracers, i.e., LiCO3, CsCO3, Na2SeO4, RbCO3 and 15NH4Cl. Identification of deep-rooting crop species in arable subsoil by the minirhizotron technique Organic Eprints

Our current understanding of the plant deep root system and its relevance for crop production is limited. A field trial was established in order to monitor the root growth of various deep-rooted crops down to 5 m of soil depth with the minirhizotron technique. Root intensity (RI: intersections m-1) and maximum rooting depth (m) of seven different crop species indicate varying degree of root penetration capacity among the tested crops. Overall, within one season over 89 % of RI was concentrated at 0-1.0 m of soil depth. Sugar beet (1.4 m) as an annual crop showed the most rapid root growth rate (10.6 mm day-1). Structural changes of plant residues during decomposition in a compost environment Organic Eprints

We investigated the actual degradation of plant material during composting by qualitative methods using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) combined with quantitative chemical methods. Decomposition of Mischanthus (Mischanthus oogiformis L.), hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) straw was observed by placing litterbags containing these materials in compost piles. Hemp and Mischanthus straw were more stable than the wheat straw, but the two materials differed in the way they were degraded despite similar chemical composition.
