In wet season, rainfed area in Lower Northern of Thailand has has an abundance of soil and water availability which is suitable for growing a photoperiod-sensitive rice with high yield potential. However, favorite rice varieties often have low yield and are susceptible to rice pests. Breeding for high yield and resistance to disease and insect pests while maintaining good eating quality is, therefore, the major approaches in changing rice varieties for good qualities, increased yield and adequate consumption. A promising lines, PSL97060-17-CNT-1-2-1, was obtained from three-way cross between KLG88028-22-1-2-2 and F1 of SPR88096-17-3-2-2 and IR60 at Phitsanulok Rice Research Center. Selection in F4-F6 was subsequently conducted at Chai Nat Rice Research...

Relationship of rice disease epidemics and climate change for study the effect of climate change on the disease epidemics and pathogens. Cultivated rice variety RD31 and RD41 every month since January 2012 - December 2013; observed disease incidence and disease severity in seedling, tillering and panicle stage. The results showed that found rice diseases all months in RD31 and RD41 such as bacterial leaf blight disease (BLB), brown spot disease, narrow brown spot disease, dirty panicle disease, false smut disease, orange leaf disease, rice grassy stunt disease and ragged stunt disease. BLB is the major disease in these areas and found almost year in tillering to panicle stage. Severe epidemics in August and December. BLB infected RD41 more than RD31, that...

Bacterial leaf blight disease (BB) caused by Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae. (ex Ishiyama). In 2007 was a severe outbreak in Phitsanulok 2 and ChaiNat 1 variety in the central region and lower north region of Thailand. The farmers’yield has been damaged. Integrated disease management (IDM) by applied the tillage combined with bactericide to reduce the disease severity in paddy field, that cultivated non-resistant variety to BB. To maintain yield meet potential of rice varieties or reduce damage to a minimum. In dry season 2010, research in paddy field of ChaiNat Rice Research Center by broadcasting ChaiNat 1 variety. Results showed that, applied the rate of seed and fertilizer according to the advice of Rice Department (RD) combined with sprayed bacbicure...

Blast and bacterial leaf blight diseases are major diseases, which cause damage to yield and quality of rice in Thailand. Evaluation of rice lines/varieties from rice gene germplasm bank (Rice Department) and rice germplasm from International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) under the International network for genetic evaluation of rice (INGER). Reaction test to blast and bacterial leaf blight diseases, with the objective for blast and bacterial blight evaluation resistance of rice lines/varieties, were conducted at Chainat Rice Research Center in 2008 – 2014. 1,200 rice germplasms were used for reaction test to blast disease. Blast disease evaluation at seedling stage was conducted under the upland short row conditions (natural infections). The results...

Disease assessments were also conducted in the farmers’ fields in 16 provinces responsible by participating offices in the Upper and Lower North, Central, East and South of Thailand. The main objective was to investigate the relationship between meteorological data and disease epidemics through field survey and carried out experiment on continuous rice cultivation by sowing popular rice variety every month. The major rainfed rice growing area in the Lower North region of Thailand has good soil fertility. It has high potential to produce good rice varieties including aromatic rice. However, at present, Nahng Mon S-4 is the only aromatic, intermediate amylose content rice variety being officially released. Therefore, a selection for an aromatic, intermediate amylose content, high yield and resistant to major disease and insect pest is needed to provide the alternative for farmers. The promising line designated PSL04106-28-1-2-1-1-1 was obtained the double cross being HPSL1/Mudgo//HSRN/SPR90116-15-2-2-1-1///SPR90116-15-2-2-1-1 during 2002-2004. F1 and F2 were massively sown in 2005-2006, respectively. F3 and F4 were tested against brown plant hopper (BPH)...

Irrigated paddy fields are the rice growing areas having high yield potential. Two significant factors enhancing high yield are the well-adapted variety and good in rice production management. PSL05101-93-1-32 is a promising rice line derived from the 3-way cross of PSL00508-3-1-1-4/IR66738-118-1-2//IR67966-188-2-2-1 in 2005. It had as high yield as 965 kg/rai (6.03t/ha).The average grain yield was 730 kg/rai which was greater than PSL2, CNT1 and RD47 by 14, 13 and 7%, respectively. The maturity was 115 days after sowing by transplanting method. Plant height was 83-90 cm. This promising line is a non-glutinous long grain rice having straw-color husk. The paddy rice seed dimensions was 10.4×2.61×2.10 mm. by width x length x thickness, respectively. The paddy...

Effect of cultivated methods and pests management to reduced pests outbreak was evaluation at Chai Nat Rice Research Center, Chai Nat province. Experimental design was split plot in RCB with four replications. Main plots were 4 cultivated methods including direct seedling using the Rice Department recommend rate, manual transplanting, machine transplanting and parachuting method. Sub plots composed of 2 pest management including application with IPM-controlled treatments and without pest management controlled treatments. The results found that cultivation methods effected the degree of pest outbreak. Rice thrips (Stenchaetothrips biformis) outbreak more severe than the economic threshold was detected only in cultivation with direct seedling method....
