Whole-system metabolism and CO2 fluxes in a Mediterranean Bay dominated by seagrass beds (Palma Bay, NW Mediterranean) ArchiMer
Gazeau, F; Duarte, Cm; Gattuso, Jp; Barron, C; Navarro, N; Ruiz, S; Prairie, Yt; Calleja, M; Delille, B; Frankignoulle, M; Borges, Av.
Planktonic and benthic incubations (bare and Posidonia oceanica vegetated sediments) were performed at monthly intervals from March 2001 to October 2002 in a seagrass vegetated area of the Bay of Palma (Mallorca, Spain). Results showed a contrast between the planktonic compartment, which was on average near metabolic balance (-4.6 +/- 5.9 mmol O-2 m(-2) d(-1)) and the benthic compartment, which was autotrophic (17.6 +/- 8.5 mmol O-2 m(-2) d(-1)). During two cruises in March and June 2002, planktonic and benthic incubations were performed at several stations in the bay to estimate the whole-system metabolism and to examine its relationship with partial pressure of CO2 (pCO(2)) and apparent oxygen utilisation (AOU) spatial patterns. Moreover, during the...

Phytoplankton chlorophyll a distribution and water column stability in the central Atlantic Ocean ArchiMer
Agusti, S; Duarte, Cm.
The relationship between the vertical distribution of phytoplankton chlorophyll a and the physical structure of the upper central Atlantic Ocean was investigated based on results from a cruise across the tropical Atlantic (27 degrees N to 36 degrees S). The thermocline was very sharp and shallow in the northern part of the transect, off the coast of Mauritania and Senegal, and deepened progressively to reach > 150 m deep between 20 degrees S and 30 degrees S. There was a deep chl a maximum associated with the thermocline throughout the transect, reaching chl a concentrations up to 50 fold greater than those in surface waters. The chl a concentration was greatest off the NW African coast and declined towards the south, parallel to a progressive deepening...

Plankton metabolism and dissolved organic carbon use in the Bay of Palma, NW Mediterranean sea ArchiMer
Navarro, N; Agusti, S; Duarte, Cm.
A study was conducted to assess the annual variability in planktonic metabolism and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) utilization in an oligotrophic Mediterranean Bay (Bay of Palma, Spain) and to test the role of elevated DOC concentrations in driving planktonic metabolism off balance. We examined, at monthly intervals over 17 mo, gross primary production (GPP), community respiration (R), net community production (NCP), DOC concentration, total chlorophyll a (chl a) concentration, and, for a smaller subset of 11 to 14 mo, net DOC fluxes, bacterial abundance (BA) and bacterial respiration (BR). The community was net heterotrophic in autumn, winter and the first summer studied, and shifted to net autotrophic towards the end of the study period. This period of...
