Many areas of life sciences research involve integrating terabytes of heterogeneous,
distributed and autonomous data available on the Web. The myGrid project has addressed
these challenging problems by developing and applying novel grid and semantic web
services technology to life science data integration, particularly genome annotation and
microarray analysis. This presentation outlines the past, present and future of the Taverna workflow system.

Chemical Entities of Biological Interest (ChEBI) [1] is a database and ontology that represents knowledge about more than 15,000 small molecules and their biochemistry. The database does not currently use description logic reasoning or OWL, but is investigating this possibility for better, cheaper and faster ontology development in the future. This poster describes four specific problems and solutions to reasoning in ChEBI: 1. Using necessary and sufficient conditions 2. identifying inconsistencies 3. Improving alignment with the the Gene Ontology (GO) 4. Reasoning with chemical structures. |

Chemical Entities of Biological Interest (ChEBI) is a database and ontology that represents biochemical knowledge about small molecules. Recent changes to the ontology have created new opportunities for automated reasoning with description logic, that have not previously been fully exploited in Chemistry. These changes open up the possibility of building an improved chemical semantic web, by making more use of necessary and sufficient conditions, allowing reasoning about chemical structure, highlighting ambiguous inconsistencies and improving alignment with the Gene Ontology (GO). This paper briefly discusses some of the problems with reasoning over the current version of ChEBI, to tackle these issues, and their potential solutions. |
