The FETCH experiment: An overview - art. no. 8053 ArchiMer
Hauser, Danièle; Branger, H; Bouffies Cloche, S; Despiau, S; Drennan, W; Dupuis, H; Durand, P; De Madron, X; Estournel, C; Eymard, L; Flamant, C; Graber, H; Guerin, C; Kahma, K; Lachaud, G; Lefevre, J; Pelon, J; Petterson, H; Piguet, B; Queffeulou, Pierre; Tailliez, D; Tournadre, Jean; Weill, A.
The "flux, etat de la mer, et tele'de'tection en conditions de fetch variable'' (FETCH) was aimed at studying the physical processes associated with air-sea exchanges and mesoscale oceanic circulation in a coastal region dominated by frequent strong offshore winds. The experiment took place in March-April 1998 in the northwestern Mediterranean Sea (Gulf of Lion). Observations were collected with the R/V L'Atalante, with an air-sea interaction spar (ASIS) buoy, with waverider buoys, and with research aircraft equipped for in situ and remote sensing measurements. The present paper is an introduction to the following special section, which groups 12 papers (including this one) presenting results on turbulent flux measurements at the ocean surface, on the...

Determining ridge and runnel longshore migration rate using Spot imagery ArchiMer
Lafon, V; Dupuis, H; Howa, H; Froidefond, Jm.
High-resolution colour satellite imagery is used to map the morphology and to determine the longshore movements of intertidal ridge and runnel systems that characterise the Atlantic southwest coast of France. A couple of Spot images recorded during the summer of 1989 are processed to extract accurate geographical maps of the coastline defined. in this study, as the level corresponding to the lowest astronomical tide. The coastline extraction method is based on a reflectance model, providing depth measurements that were calibrated in the field. This method enables us to map the coastline regardless of the tide level above the lowest astronomical tide at the moment of the image capture. As this model can be extrapolated to a large area, hen sea water is...

Observation of irregular wave transformation in the surf zone over a gently sloping sandy beach on the French Atlantic coastline ArchiMer
Senechal, N; Dupuis, H; Bonneton, P; Howa, H; Pedreros, R.
The dissipation of the sea-swell frequency band energy (nominally 0.09 < f less than or equal to 0.3 Hz) and the distribution of low frequency band energy (nominally 0.005 less than or equal to f less than or equal to 0.09 Hz) on a transect crossing the surf and swash zones of a fine grained, gently sloping barred beach are investigated with data from a five element synchronous pressure sensor line deployed for 8 d. In this paper, we suggest a rational method to determine the frequency cut-off between the low frequency band and the sea-swell frequency band from the cross-shore evolution of the sea surface elevation energy density spectra. Sea-swell wave heights are depth limited, consistent with previous works whereas low frequency wave heights are...
