Grassland management, soil biota and ecosystem services in sandy soils Organic Eprints
Eekeren, N. van.
Recent legislative restrictions on the use of fertilizers and irrigation, and a quest for sustainable farming systems have drawn renewed attention to the functioning of the soil and the ecosystem services it provides. Soil biota play an important role in the provision of these ecosystem services, which may be influenced by grassland management. The two objectives of this thesis were 1) to gain insight into the effect of different grassland management measures on soil biota in sandy soils; and 2) to explore the effect of grassland management on the ecosystem services provided by soil biota.

Roots and earthworms under grass, clover and a grass-clover mixture Organic Eprints
Eekeren, N. van; Bokhorst, J.G.; Brussaard, Lijbert.
White clover has a lower root biomass and a higher abundance of earthworms than grass. This might have an impact on the ecosystem services soil structure maintenance and water regulation when white clover is introduced in a grass-clover mixture. We investigated the root biomass, the abundance of earthworms and a selection of soil physical parameters in white clover, grass-clover, and grass with and without inorganic N fertilizer. The treatment with clover-only had a lower root biomass, a lower C/N-ratio of the roots, a higher abundance of earthworms, a higher number of earthworm burrows, a lower penetration resistance at the 20-30 cm soil layer and a lower proportion of crumbs in the soil, than the other treatments. This confirms the literature that pure...

Combining agro-ecological functions in grass-clover mixtures Organic Eprints
Haas, Brechtje, de; Hoekstra, Nyncke; Schoot, Jan Rinze, van der; Visser, Eric J.W.; Kroon, Hans, de; Eekeren, N. van.
Grass-clover mixtures show many benefits for sustainable agriculture. In the Netherlands, organic farmers often work together in a so-called partner farm concept, with the aim to close nutrient cycles on a regional level. In this system, arable farms grow one-year grass-clover leys, as fodder for a livestock farm, in exchange for, e.g., manure. This practice could also be used in the transition of conventional farms towards a more circular regenerative and nature inclusive agriculture. In the current experiment we assessed the effect of a range of grass (Lolium perenne: Lp, Lolium multiflorum: Lm) and clover (Trifolium pratense: Tp and Trifolium repens: Tr) monocultures and mixtures on both below- and aboveground parameters in light of benefits for...

Survey of the marketing concept for organic goat meat in the Netherlands Organic Eprints
Loefs, Renske; Eekeren, N. van.
(Organic) goat meat is a new product for the Dutch consumer. Establishing this new market requires entrepreneurial skills and persistency. In the Netherlands there is a small group of pioneers who has gained a fair amount of experience with rearing goats and marketing goat meat. This study specifically maps their experience. The survey included short questionnaires and interviews by telephone. It is to be expected that (organic) goat meat will more often appear on the menu in the near future, given the enthusiasm and positive comments of the group of trendsetting consumers and cooks. Q fever unfortunately has tarnished the image of goat meat somewhat, but it is expected that organic goat meat will gain popularity step by step, slowly but surely. Joint...

Lucerne (Medicago sativa) or grass-clover as cut-and-carry fertilizers in organic agriculture Organic Eprints
Burgt, Geert-Jan H.M.; Eekeren, N. van; Scholberg, Johannes; Koopmans, Chris.
On-farm nitrogen fixation is a driving force in organic agriculture. The efficiency with which this nitrogen is used can be increased by using lucerne (Medicago sativa) or grass-clover directly as sources of fertilizer on arable land: cut-and-carry fertilizers. In two arable crops, the use of lucerne and grass-clover as fertilizers was compared with the use of poultry manure and slurry. The nitrogen-use efficiency at crop level was comparable or better for the cut-andcarry fertilizers as compared to the animal manures. The relative P and K content of these fertilizers came closer to the crop demand than that of the poultry manure. Crop yields were comparable or better when using lucerne or grass-clover as fertilizer. It is concluded that cutand-carry...

Genetic differences in root mass of Lolium perenne varieties under field conditions Organic Eprints
Deru, Joachim; Schilder, Henk; Schoot, Jan Rinze, van der; Eekeren, N. van.
Although grasses have dense rooting systems, nutrient uptake and productivity can be increased, and N-leaching reduced, if rooting is further improved. The variation in root mass of 16 varieties of Lolium perenne was studied under field conditions in two experiments on sandy soil in The Netherlands. The chosen varieties differed in genetic and aboveground characteristics such as ploidy, productivity and grass cover. Root dry matter (RDM) was measured in the 0–8, 8–16 and 16–24 cm soil layers. In summary, we found that RDM of perennial ryegrass differed significantly between arieties under field conditions. These differences were not linked to grass yield, which indicates that it is possible to select perennial ryegrass varieties that combine high...

Organic farmers grow grassclover in nature areas to remove soil phosphate for development of specious rich grasslands Organic Eprints
Timmermans, B.G.H.; Eekeren, N. van.
While worldwide the current reserves of phosphate rock are being exhausted, many agricultural and former agricultural soils in The Netherlands have been enriched by large quantities of phosphorus as a result of fertilization. In current nature development projects on former agricultural lands, it is thought that this phosphorus prevents development of target-nature types. Therefore nature organizations currently seek ways to remove it. We tested grassclover, organically managed by local farmers, as a tool to extract excessive soil phosphate from nature areas and reimport it into the mineral cycle agricultural farms. In a small scale experiment we have shown that grassclover with potassium fertilization can remove more than twice the amount of soil...

Bi-cropping fodder maize in an existing (grass)clover sward Organic Eprints
Prins, U.; Eekeren, N. van; Oomen, G.J.M..
Organic cultivation of fodder maize is still considered to be difficult. Weed pressure, soil structure degradation during harvest and low nutrient efficiency are some of the common problems. Directly sowing maize in a (grass)clover sward using special-ized drilling machines can solve these problems. In a bi-cropping experiment under organic conditions we found similar yields as the reference treatment (ploughing) when the maize was sown in a clover sward, the roots of the remaining sward were cut one week after sowing and an additional fertiliser was applied.

Optimal length of the grass-clover period in crop rotations: results of a 9-year field experiment under organic conditions Organic Eprints
Boer, H. de; Eekeren, N. van; Pinxterhuis, Ina; Stienezen, M.W.J..
A nine year crop rotation experiment was carried out in the Netherlands from 2002 through 2010 to (1) determine the optimal length of the grass-clover (mixture) and maize period in crop rotations and (2) to determine which crops should receive slurry application with priority in case the availability of cattle slurry is limited. The results show that dry matter yield decreased for all treatments over the experimental period, due to a decrease in plant-available N (from N fixation by the clover, applied slurry and mineralization of soil N). The relative yield increase (increase relative to the negative trend) due to slurry application was largest when all crops received slurry application, and the effects of slurry application increased over time.
