Content of 137Cs, 40K, 90Sr, 210Po radionuclides and some chemical pollutants in the Black Sea mussels, Mytilus galloprovincialis Lam. IBSS Repository
Egorov, V. N.; Lazorenko, G. E.; Mirzoeva, N. Yu.; Stokozov, N. A.; Kostova, S. K.; Malakhova, L. V.; Pirkova, V.; Arkhipova, S. I.; Korkishko, N. F.; Popovichev, V. N.; Plotitsyna, O. V.; Migal, L. V..
The concentrations of 137Cs, 40K, 90Sr, 210Ро radionuclides, mercury and polychlorbiphenyls were determined in the Black Sea mussels collected in four different areas of the Crimean coast depending on places of sampling, the shell length of mollusks and the stages of their gonads development. The study was carried out in the framework of CIESM “Mussel Watch” Programme.

Observation of microbial carbonate build-ups growing at methane seeps near the upper boundary of the gaszhydrate stability zone in the Black sea IBSS Repository
Gulin, S. B.; Greinert, J.; Egorov, V. N.; De Batist, M.; Artemov, Yu. G..
Extensive dredge sampling carried out in May-June 2004 in the deeper part of the Dnepr paleo-delta area (NW Black Sea) yielded for the first time chimney-shaped carbonate microbial build-ups, which occur at methane seeps close to upper boundary of the gas-hydrate stability zone (~ 700 m). Carbonate samples taken with a benthic trawl represent fragments of the uppermost, middle and lowest parts of the build-up; they are similar morphologically to those found previously at the shallower and deeper methane seeps in the Black Sea. At the same time, the perforated, plate-like carbonates in the lowest parts of the build-up provide first indications that gas channels are formed during the earliest growth phase of these microbial structures. Stable carbon isotope...

Estimation of 90Sr and 137Cs transfer from the Black Sea to the Mediterranean Basin after the Chernobyl NPP accident IBSS Repository
Egorov, V. N.; Polikarpov, G. G.; Stokozov, N. A.; Mirzoyeva, N. Yu..
The 90Sr and 137Cs inputs from the Black Sea to the Mediterranean Basin through the Bosporus Strait after the Chernobyl NPP accident were estimated. It is obtained that the 90Sr and 137Cs fluxes from the Black Sea to the Sea of Marmara are decreased with an effective exponential half-lives (T05) 9.5 years and 6.4 years, respectively. The estimations have shown that 110 TBq 90Sr and 250 TBq 137Cs in 1986-2000 was delivered from the Black Sea to the Mediterranean Basin after the Chernobyl NPP accident. The radioactive pollution of the Mediterranean Basin will continue for 5 half-lives, i.e. 47 years for 90Sr and 32 years for 137Cs. The total 90Sr and l37Cs inputs from the Black Sea into the Mediterranean Basin have been assessed as 168 TBq and 311 TBq,...

Methane emission to the hydro- and atmosphere by gas bubble streams in the Dnieper paleo-delta, the Black Sea IBSS Repository
Artemov, Yu. G.; Egorov, V. N.; Polikarpov, G. G.; Gulin, S. B..
To estimate methane flux from natural gas bubble streams (seepages) a combined approach was applied, inclusive of detailed echo survey of investigated area and data analysis with the use of specialized software, GIS technique and mathematic simulation. A precise location map of methane seepages in the Dnieper paleo-delta region was obtained. In total 2200 seepages were identified at the investigated area of 378.1 sq.km, which release 16.74 106 m³ at atmospheric pressure (STP), or 12.0 10-3 teragram (Tg) methane a year. Statistical distribution of individual seepage methane flux rates conforms to the lognormal law. We found that 1.9 % of methane from gas bubble streams reaches the atmosphere in gas phase, while 98.1 % dissolves in the water column. Thus,...
