A New Look at the Agricultural Community as Extension Clientele in the West AgEcon
Tranel, Jeffrey E.; Hewlett, John P.; Weigel, Randolph R.; Rahman, Tauhidur; Teegerstrom, Trent; Ehmke, Cole.
This report presents the preliminary results of a statistically valid 2006 survey of small agricultural producers (sales of less than $50,000) in three Western states (Wyoming, Colorado and Arizona). The West has undergone significant change, and the composition of farm managers has changed with it. This report provides information from farm operators in the rural West on their perceived threats as well as characteristics of themselves and their operations. Topics of interest were demographics, reasons for involvement in agriculture, income, resource management (crops and livestock), and preferences for information delivery. The project was supported by the Western Center for Risk Management Education.

Profiling the Evolving Characteristics and Needs for Risk Management Education of Commercial Agricultural Producers in the Intermountain West AgEcon
Hewlett, John P.; Ehmke, Cole.
The rural West has experienced dramatic demographic and economic transformations during the past several decades. The makeup of farm operators has changed significantly, and enterprises are increasingly at greater production, financial, marketing, human, and institutional risks. Given the importance of university outreach education to the future of agriculture, a better understanding of farm operators, including what they perceive to be the greatest threats to their operations, is required to effectively design risk management education. This project has resulted in improved understanding of agricultural producer needs for risk management education, through the results of two surveys completed over the past three years. These surveys targeted both small...

TEACHING NOTE TO ACCOMPANY WHICH WAY TO GROW AT MBC FARMS? AgEcon
Ehmke, Cole; Dobbins, Craig L.; Boehlje, Michael.
This teaching note accompanies the case study "Which Way to Grow at MBC Farms?" The case was published in the Review of Agricultural Economics, Volume 26, Number 4, 2004. Like many farm operations, MBC Farms is trying to determine what strategic actions to take to remain competitive. The farm produces corn and soybeans, contracted specialty corn, and milk. The crops and dairy managers are considering growth opportunities, but have not decided on a strategy. There are a number of possibilities, but the management team is seriously considering expanding either the dairy to take advantage of a milk contract or contract crop production. With the MBC Farms case, instructors can teach farm business managers how to use strategic and financial planning tools to...

THE MARKET FOR E-COMMERCE SERVICES IN AGRICULTURE AgEcon
Ehmke, Cole; Ernst, Stanley C.; Hopkins, Jeffrey W.; Tweeten, Luther G..
We report results of a survey of 608 Ohio agribusinesses in 1999 and show them to be divided in their attitudes and acceptance of e-commerce. Half of the respondents report that their business has a web site, although many had taken a negative stance toward such a move. Nearly all say that the internet will significantly change their sector, and the majority of managers report that e-commerce has significantly affected the way they view their business.
