Sustainability of Malaysian Smallholder Banana Farming: an Energy Efficiency Use-Based Audit CIGR Journal
El Pebrian, Darius.
Banana (Musa spp.) is one of important food crops that contributes to the Malaysia’s economy from agro-based industry sector. This study aims to inspect the sustainability of banana cultivation by smallholder in Malaysia based on auditing the energy  efficiency use on its crop upkeep operation. Data were collected based on oral interviews with the owner of smallholder banana farming   at  off the coast of the state of Sabah in East Malaysia, Malaysia.   Energy efficiency use for fertilizing, spraying herbicide, irrigation, pruning and harvesting in banana cultivation were audited  in the study.   The findings showed  total energy input use...

Exploring Mechanization Degree and Capacity in Malaysia’s Oil Palm Plantations CIGR Journal
El Pebrian, Darius; Ak. Mohiddin, Dk. Norhajijah.
Development of mechanization is a crucial element in oil palm plantations in Malaysia since its significant role in reducing of highly dependence on manual workers. Nonetheless, the recent mechanization degree and capacity in oil palm plantations in this country is still rarely studied.  This study aims to determine the mechanization degree and capacity in oil palm plantations in Malaysia. Determining mechanization degree and mechanization capacity were computed based on the available secondary data from a recently survey on 4541 oil palm estates in Malaysia.  The findings showed that average mechanization degree and capacity of field operations in Malaysia’s oil palm plantations were 10.88% and 11.04%, respectively, and considered as low when compared to...

Analysis of human energy expenditure in harvesting sugar palm (Arenga Pinnata Merr) in Malaysia CIGR Journal
El Pebrian, Darius; Yusof, Zakiah binti.
Sugar palm (Arenga pinnata Merr) is an indigenous plant in Malaysia, which has a great potential to be expanded into large scale plantation crop for the production of sugar and other sugar-based products. Until today, harvesting of sugar palm tree is a laborious operation, without application of any mechanization systems. It takes the largest demand for labor and time spent in the sugar palm cultivation. The main objective of the study was to investigate human energy expenditure in harvesting sugar palm in Malaysia. Workers’ workload and productivity in harvesting sugar palm were also analyzed. Relevant physical properties of sugar palm tree, heart rate, and human energy expenditure and worker productivity as well as in harvesting sugar palm were recorded...

The characteristics of the repair and maintenance costs distribution of rice combine harvester in Malaysian paddy fields CIGR Journal
El Pebrian, Darius; Ismail, Mohammad Izwan.
The main objective of this study is to characterize the repair and maintenance (R&M) costs distribution of rice combine harvesters in the Malaysian paddy field.  The survey method through face-to -face interviews was used to collect the data and relevant information from the owners of sampled combine harvester at rice granaries in Langkawi and Kota Setar districts of Kedah state, in Northern Region of Peninsular Malaysia. The data and information collected includes annual R&M costs and activities, components to be replaced, and their portion of the total R&M costs. The findings showed that the mean R&M costs distribution of combine harvester during off-season was 3.92 times higher than the on-season. Repairing pump bush track, wheel,...

Factors affecting farmers’ satisfactions with mechanized rice harvesting in Malaysian paddy fields: A case study of hiring custom operators CIGR Journal
El Pebrian, Darius.
Shortage of labor during the harvest season is one of the problematic situations for farmers in the Malaysian paddy fields.  Thus, combine harvester has been utilized massively in Malaysian paddy field for the purpose of assisting the farmers to overcome the problems.  Majority use of combine harvesters in the country was provided by the state farmers’ organization that offers custom operators to be hired by the farmers during harvesting seasons.  A case study was conducted to identify and rank the factors that affect farmers’ current satisfactions with mechanized harvesting using combine harvesters that offered by custom operators.  A group of farmers comprising of 336 respondents at rice granaries in Tanjung Karang district, Selangor, Malaysiawas chosen...
