On Bourletiella (Cassagnaudiella) pruinosa (Tullberg, 1871) and its allies (Collembola: Sminthuridae) Naturalis
Ellis, Willem N..
In dry dune vegetations in the Netherlands a species of Bourletiella occurs that is closely related to B. pistillum Gisin, 1946, and B. radula Gisin, 1946. The species is characterized by a virtually obligatory sexual neutralisation of all males throughout the summer. A study of type material proved the identity of this species with Bourletiella pruinosa (Tullberg, 1871). A lectotype is selected for B. pruinosa as well as for B. agreni Stach, 1956. B. agreni, created for B. pruinosa sensu Ågren, 1903, Linnaniemi, 1912, is proved to be a junior synonym of B. pistillum. B. pistillum incisa n. ssp. is described from the Pyrenees and the Ardennes. Bourletiella cruciata Haybach, 1972, is shown to be a sexually neutralized form of B. pistillum, and is a junior...

Ellis, Willem N..
Ceratophysella engeli n. sp. is described from Guatemala. The species belongs to the communis-group, and is closely related to C. succinea (Gisin, 1949) and to C. orizabae Yosii, 1962.

Studies on neotropical Collembola, I. Some Collembola from Guatemala Naturalis
Ellis, Willem N..
Eight species of Collembola are recorded from an ant nest in Guatemala. Two species, described by Denis (1931a) from Costa Rica are redescribed more extensively. A new species of Pseudosinella is described.

To make a meadow it takes a clover and a bee: the entomophilous flora of N.W. Europe and its insects Naturalis
Ellis, Willem N.; Ellis-Adam, Albertine C..
An analysis of the anthophilous fauna of N.W. Europe is presented, stressing the role plants play for insects. The study is based on some 29,000 relations between about 2,600 insect species and 1,300 plant species (569 genera). The data are derived from our database (“CrypTra”) of biotic relations between Cryptobiota and Tracheophyta, that is based on published sources. It is suggested that a ratio of 2 to 5 anthophilous insect species per entomophilous plant species is the rule in N.W. Europe, where other types of zoophily are virtually absent. A small minority of the plant species/genera play a disproportionally important role as hosts to flower visitors; many of these so-called cornucopian taxa belong to the commonest entomophilous plants in the region,...

The spring fauna of Collembola (Insecta) from Rhodos, with descriptions of some new taxa Naturalis
Ellis, Willem N..
An account is given of the collembolan fauna of the Greek island Rhodos, from material collected in early spring 1970. Altogether 52 taxa were recognized, constituting the first faunal list for the Greek isles. Six new species are described in this material, viz. Lathriopyga hellenica, , Folsomides nanus, Pseudosinella ciliata, Orchesella sporadica, Deuterosminthurus pandayi and Dicyrtomina (Calvatomina) articulata; moreover the new subspecies Acherontiella bougisi rhodia and Deuterosminthurus sulphureus mediterraneus, and the new forma Deuterosminthurus pallipes fenyesi f. pallida. Heteromurus sexoculatus Brown, 1926, is reduced to a form of H. major (Moniez, 1889), Deuterosminthurus fenyesi Stach, 1926, is reduced to a subspecies of D. pallipes Bourlet,...

Some Collembola from Ibiza with descriptions of three new species, and a note on Hypogastrura serrata (Ågren, 1904) Naturalis
Ellis, Willem N..
A first list of Collembola from Ibiza is presented, based on material extracted from two soil samples in midwinter. Out of the 13 species that are recorded three are new to science, viz.: Hypogastrura pityusica, Lathriopyga ibicensis and Neosminthurus natalicius. The latter species forms the first European record of the genus Neosminthurus Mills, 1934. Another interesting discovery was that of Folsomides marchicus (Frenzel, 1941); arguments are brought forward that this species is a senior synonym of Subisotoma petiti Delamare Deboutteville, 1948. The holotype of Hypogastrura serrata (Ågren, 1904) has been studied and some additions to the original description are presented. It is found that the specimen was heavily infected by Sporozoa; it is suggested...
