Position and rate of intestinal fermentation in adult ostrich evaluated by volatile fatty acid OAK

The study was conducted in Obihiro, Japan to examine the position and rate of intestinal fermentation in three adult ostriches (Struthio camelus) with mean liveweight of 103±4.7 kg. The ostriches were fed fresh leaves of orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata). At twenty five hours before the slaughter, they ingested 100 g fresh leaves mixed with 20 g oblong strips (2mm wide and 30 mm long) of a filter paper, in which chromium oxide was absorbed at a rate of 40 %. After the slaughter, small intestine, cecum and large intestine were cut into 3, 2 and 7 pieces, respectively, with the same length in each organ. Tensile and shearing properties of leaves in festulolium and perennial ryegrass OAK

The study was carried out to determine tensile and shearing properties of leaves in cultivars (Ba11356 and Ba11358) of festulolium (Festulolium loliaceum), compared with those of diploid (Ba11353 and Aurora) and tetraploid (Ba10855 and Prospero) cultivars of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne). Four successive samples of grass leaves were taken from pure stands of third-year swards during July to September, 2004 in Obihiro, Japan. Tensile strength was measured using a 100 N load cell of the breaking test machine. Shear strength was measured about 5 mm apart from a broken point in the tensile test using a pair of the scissors.
