A BIOTIC CONTROL PERSPECTIVE ON NITRATE CONTAMINATION OF GROUNDWATER FROM AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION AgEcon
Erickson, Jon D.; Schlapfer, Felix.
Agronomists consider the continuity and nutrient capturing properties of cover crops as important determinants of nutrient cycling in agricultural systems. Managing for these biotic control functions can help limit nutrient loss and groundwater contamination between main crop harvests. This simulation study highlights the potential role of cover crop management in a welfare economics framework. The objective is to find the optimal combination of nutrient input to the main crop, the extent of off-season cover crops, and crop functional diversity to maximize the sum of benefits from agricultural production and groundwater protection.

From Ecology to Economics: The Case Against CO2 Fertilization AgEcon
Erickson, Jon D..
The effects of increasing concentrations of atmospheric carbon dioxide (C02) on agricultural yields are analyzed. It is argued that any positive effects on yields from C02 fertilization, demonstrated in controlled experiments, would be weak in farm conditions given water and nutrient limits. Furthermore, possible benefits would be more than offset by predicted consequences of climate change, ozone depletion, and additional gases created from fossil fuel combustion. The impact of including C02 fertilization on crop yield and economic welfare predictions is evaluated. The policy distorting potential of fragile claims is stressed

Photovoltaic Technology: Markets, Economics, and Development AgEcon
Erickson, Jon D.; Chapman, Duane.
Photovoltaic (PV) electricity has been widely supported as a remote energy source for developing countries. In response, the production and shipment of PV modules has steadily increased throughout the past decade, often marketed through the auspices of technology transfer and financed by international development aid. This paper investigates the motives, economics, and development implications of PVs in rural electrification. The implications of subsidizing a PV market rather than investing in further PV research and development are explored.
