Effects of timing of sulfur application and nitrogen fertilization on yield and quality of barley Organic Eprints
Eriksen, J.
The effect of S and N application on the redistribution of S and the effect of N application and time of S application (from sowing to the middle of heading) on yield and quality of spring barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) was investigated in pot experiments. Nitrogen and sulphur had a clear interactive effect on the yield of all plant parts with little or no effect of S at low N application rates and similar low effect of N without S application. About 70% of leaf N was redistributed to the ears in plants growing at adequate S supply compared with about 35% of leaf N in S-deficient plants. The proportion of ear N and S originating from the redistribution of leaf N and S was 49% and 23%, respectively. Deficiency symptoms were observed already at the beginning...

Implications of grazing by sows for nitrate leaching from grassland and the succeeding cereal crop Organic Eprints
Eriksen, J.
Outdoor pig production may have benefits in terms of animal welfare but could be undesirable in terms of nutrient losses. In paddocks on sandy soil grazed by lactating sows, nitrate leaching was determined using the suction cup technique from the start of grazing in October to after the following barley/pea wholecrop with perennial ryegrass. The inorganic N concentration in soil was uneven after sow grazing with the highest values found near the feeding area. In contrast to low nitrate leaching in the year of grazing (25-30 kg N ha-1), losses were considerable in the following autumn and winter. Throughout the measuring period of 18 months, nitrate leaching inside paddocks was on average 320 kg N ha-1 with the major part near the feeding area. Ten m from...

The effect of catch crops on sulphate leaching and availability of S in the succeeding crop Organic Eprints
Eriksen, J; Thorup-Kristensen, K.
Sulphate leaching losses may reduce the long-term possibility of maintaining the S supply of crops in low input farming systems. The ability of catch crops (Italian ryegrass [Lolium multiflorum Lam], winter rape [Brassica napus L.] and fodder radish [Raphanus sativus L.]) to reduce soil sulphate concentrations in autumn and make it available to a succeeding crop was investigated in a field experiment on sandy loam soil. All catch crops reduced soil sulphate concentrations in the autumn compared to bare soil. Especially the cruciferous catch crops had the ability to deplete efficiently soil sulphate levels and thus, reduce the sulphate leaching potential. The S uptake in aboveground catch crop was 8, 22 and 36 kg S ha-1 for ryegrass, winter rape and fodder...

Forbs enhance productivity of unfertilised grass-clover leys and support low-carbon bioenergy Organic Eprints
Cong, W-F; Jing, J; Rasmussen, J; Søegaard, K; Eriksen, J.
Intensively managed grasslands are dominated by highly productive grass-clover mixtures. Increasing crop diversity by inclusion of competitive forbs may enhance biomass production and sustainable biofuel production. Here we examined if one or all of three forbs (chicory, Cichorium intybus L.; caraway, Carum carvi L.; plantain, Plantago lanceolata L.) included in ryegrass-red clover mixtures enhanced above- and below-ground productivity, and assessed their biofuel potentials, based on a three-year experiment with and without fertilisation as cattle slurry. We determined herbage yield, standing root biomass, and estimated methane energy output and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions per energy unit using life cycle assessment. Results showed that...

Nitrate leaching in an organic dairy/crop rotation as affected by organic manure type, livestock density and crop. Organic Eprints
Eriksen, J; Askegaard, M; Kristensen, K.
In dairy farming systems the risk of nitrate leaching is increased by mixed rotations (pasture/arable) and the use of organic manure. We investigated the effect of four organic farming systems with different livestock densities and different types of organic manure on crop yields, nitrate leaching and N balance in an organic dairy/crop rotation (barley – grass-clover – grass-clover – barley/pea – winter wheat – fodder beet) from 1994 until 1998. Nitrate concentrations in soil water extracted by ceramic suction cups ranged from below 1 mg NO3-N/l in 1st year grass-clover to 20-50 mg NO3-N/l in the winter following barley/pea and winter wheat. Peaks of high nitrate concentrations were observed in 2nd year grass-clover, probably due to urination by grazing...

Short-term residual N unaffected by forbs in grass-clover mixtures Organic Eprints
Dhamala, NR; Rasmussen, J; Cong, WF; Carlsson, G; Søegaard, K; Eriksen, J.
We determined the effect on residual nitrogen (N) of including forbs (chicory, ribwort plantain and caraway) in perennial ryegrass-red clover mixtures. Although soil N inputs during the grassland phase differed markedly between mixtures, in a pot experiment we found no differences in the potentially mineralizable N of the soil or in the dry matter production and N content of the spring barley test crop. The fertilizer value of the grassland mixtures corresponded to 10 g N/m2, irrespective of forb inclusion. Thus, the inclusion of nonlegume forbs did not negatively affect short-term residual N fertility of legume-based grasslands.

Redistribution of sulphur during generative growth of barley with different sulphur and nitrogen status. Organic Eprints
Eriksen, J; Nielsen, M; Mortensen, JV; Schjørring, JK.
The effect of S and N application on the distribution and redistribution of S compounds in spring barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) was investigated in pot experiments by determination of changes in the content of total-, sulphate- and thiol-S in leaves, ears and stems during the grain-filling period. Nitrogen and sulphur had a clear interactive effect on the yield of all plant parts with little or no effect of S at low N application rates and similar low effect of N without S application. The sulphate concentration in the different plant parts was markedly affected by the S application rate. This effect was most pronounced in leaves, less in stems and least in ears. In S-replete plants leaf S decreased during grain development by an average of 28%, while in...

N transfer in three-species grass-clover mixtures with chicory, ribwort plantain or caraway Organic Eprints
Dhamala, NR; Rasmussen, J; Carlsson, G; Søegaard, K; Eriksen, J.
Background and aims There is substantial evidence that legume-derived Nitrogen (N) is transferred to neighboring non-legumes in grassland mixtures. However, there is sparse information about how deep rooted nonlegume forage herbs (forbs) influence N transfer in multi-species grasslands. Methodology Red clover (Trifolium pretense L.) was grown together with perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) and one of three forb species: chicory (Cichoriumintybus L.), ribwort plantain (Plantago lanceolata L.) or caraway (Carum carvi L.) in a field experiment. During the first year after the establishment, red clover leaves were labeled with 15N-urea to determine the N transfer from red clover to companion ryegrass and forbs. Results On an annual basis, up to 15...

Nitrogen fixation in red clover grown in multi-species mixtures with ryegrass, chicory, plantain and caraway Organic Eprints
Dhamala, NR; Rasmussen, J; Carlsson, G; Søegaard, K; Eriksen, J.
While many studies have investigated effects of species composition and management on N2-fixation dynamics in simple clover-grass mixtures, there is a lack of knowledge about the performance of legumes and their N2-fixation in more species-rich grassland including non-legume forbs. This study investigated N2-fixation and total N yield in grassland mixtures including different combinations of red clover, perennial ryegrass and three deep rooted forbs: chicory, ribwort plantain and caraway, managed without and with slurry application. The percentage of clover N derived from atmosphere (%Ndfa) increased in mixtures, but was unaffected by inclusion of forbs. However, forbs affected the quantity of N2-fixation and total N yield by affecting the red clover...

Dry matter yield, chemical composition and estimated extractable protein of legume and grass species during the spring growth Organic Eprints
Solati, Z; Jørgensen, U; Eriksen, J; Søegaard, K.
BACKGROUND: Knowledge of the variation of extractable protein amount in legumes and grasses as affected by harvest time is important for identifying optimal combinations to enable a high protein production in a biorefinery. The extractability of protein was estimated using the Cornell Net Carbohydrate and Protein System across six harvests during the spring growth. RESULTS: The estimated extractable protein [g kg−1 dry matter (DM)] defined as the easily available fractions B1+B2 was significantly higher in white clover and lucerne at all harvests while, if the more cell wall attached fraction B3 can be extracted, white clover had the highest extractable protein amongst all species. Total yield of B1+B2 per ha was higher in white clover and red clover at...

The fate of nitrogen in outdoor pig production Organic Eprints
Eriksen, J; Petersen, SO; Sommer, SG.
There may be a conflict between animal welfare and nitrogen pollution in outdoor pig production. In response to concern about nitrogen being lost to the atmosphere and ground water we quantified spatial variation and temporal dynamics of mineral N, ammonia volatilization, denitrification and nitrate leaching from outdoor pig production at three commercial farms in Denmark. From paddocks containing farrowing sows substantial nitrogen losses were observed, particularly around the feeding areas. Gross ammonia emission rates varied between 0.08 and 1.26 kg N ha–1 d-1 and increased with animal density and N intake. The mean annual loss of ammonia per sow was 4.8 kg N. Denitrification rates averaged 0.52 kg N ha–1 d-1 in autumn following summer grazing with...

Nitrate leaching and growth of cereal crops following cultivation of contrasting temporary grasslands Organic Eprints
Eriksen, J.
Intensive dairy farming with low N use efficiencies may have adverse environmental impact through nitrate leaching. The residual effects of six different temporary grasslands (1994-96) on yield and nitrate leaching in the following cereal crops (1997-99) were investigated on a loamy sand in central Jutland. The grasslands were unfertilized grass-clover and fertilized ryegrass subject to cutting or continuous grazing by dairy cows with two levels of N in feed supplements. In the first year there was sufficient residual effect of the grazed grasslands to obviate the need for supplementary fertilizer, but in the following years gradually more fertilizer N was required to obtain optimal yields. Nitrate leaching decreased as a function of time after cultivation...

Nutrient excretion by outdoor pigs: a case study of distribution, utilisation and potential for environmental impact. Organic Eprints
Eriksen, J; Kristensen, K.
An increasing number of breeding sows is kept outdoors in Europe. Outdoor pig production has benefits in terms of animal welfare but may have hidden costs through nutrient losses. We investigated the distribution of nutrients in sow paddocks and the consequence for losses and utilisation in the succeeding crop. Significant correlation between soil inorganic N and the distance to feeding sites was observed after the paddocks had been used by lactating sows for 6 months (P<0.01). Near to feeders inorganic N levels became extremely high whereas 30-40 m from feeders some patches had N levels in the topsoil corresponding to the levels in the reference area without sows. In the following spring only a minor part of inorganic N was still present in the top...

Anaerobic mono-digestion of lucerne, grass and forbs - Influence of species and cutting frequency Organic Eprints
Wahid, R; Feng, L; Cong, WF; Ward, A; Møller, HB; Eriksen, J.
In the present study, biogas potentials of multispecies swards including grass, lucerne, caraway, ribwort plantain and chicory from two- and four-cut regimes (Mix-2 and Mix-4) for mono-digestion applying batch and continuous modes under lab-scale conditions were investigated. The gas yields in terms of volatile solids (VS)loaded from Mix-2 and Mix-4 were compared with pure stand lucerne from the four cuts regime (Lu-4). The batch test results indicate that methane yield on a VS basis was highest from Mix-4 (295 L kg−1), followed by Mix-2 (281 L kg−1) and Lu-4 (255 L kg−1). The results were confirmed with continuous experiments, during which the reactor digesting Mix-4 was stable throughout the experiment with low ammonia and volatile fatty acid...
