Species interactions between forbs and grass-clover contribute to yield gains and weed suppression in forage grassland mixtures Organic Eprints
Cong, W.-F.; Suter, M.; Lüscher, A.; Eriksen, J..
Grass-legume mixtures characterized by high productivity, efficient nitrogen (N) use and strong weed suppression were proposed to increase sustainability of grassland production. Adding competitive forbs to grassclover mixtures can be expected to further enhance the high productivity of grass-clover mixtures. This study investigates whether and to what extent adding forbs to a grass-clover mixture results in yield gains, and estimates the contributions of forb species (identity effect) and interactions with the grass-clover mixture (diversity effect) to these gains. It further examines the effectiveness of weed suppression in forb-containing grass-clover mixtures. Fifteen pure and mixed stands, all comprising the grass Lolium perenne L. and the legume...

The contribution of grass and clover root turnover to N leaching Organic Eprints
Rasmussen, Jesper; Helgadóttir, Á.; Frankow-Lindberg, B.; Loges, R.; Eriksen, J..
Sources of inorganic and organic N leaching from grass-clover mixtures at field sites in Denmark, Germany and Iceland were investigated. Grass or clover was labelled with 15N-urea four times (autumn 2007, spring, summer and autumn 2008) prior to the leaching season in autumn and winter 2008. Soil water was sampled at 30 cm depth and analyzed for 15N-enrichment of dissolved inorganic N (DIN) and dissolved organic N (DON). Most 15N was recovered in DON for both labelled grass and clover at all sites. At the Danish site, grass and clover contributed more to the DON pool than the DIN whereas the opposite was observed at the German and Icelandic sites. The results show that both clover and grass contribute directly to N leaching from the root zone in mixtures,...

Growth, competitive strength and herbage quality of herbs in multispecies leys Organic Eprints
Søegaard, K.; Eriksen, J.; Askegaard, M..
Herbs are established in many organic grasslands due to expected beneficially properties of nutritive value and biodiversity. However, knowledge about grassland herbs is limited. Three mixtures were therefore established at different grazing/cutting management and slurry application. The competitiveness of the species varied very much. Plantain (Plantago lanceolata) and lucerne (Medicargo sativa) competed best under cutting, opposite chicory (Cichorium intybus) that competed best under grazing. Caraway (Carum carvi), burnet (Poterium sanguisorba) and lotus (Lotus coniculatus) had a relative low competitiveness. Slurry application did not affect the proportion of non-leguminous herbs. The nutritive value differed very much. Caraway had the highest and...

Soil carbon storage and yields of spring barley following grass leys of different age Organic Eprints
Christensen, B.T.; Rasmussen, J.; Eriksen, J.; Hansen, E.M..
The inclusion of leys in arable cropping is generally found to improve soil fertility. The effect of leys depends on their botanical composition and management, but the significance of individual management factors remains confounded in most studies. We quantified the effects of one- to six-year-old pure grass leys on soil C (0-20 cm) and yields of three subsequent test crops of spring barley (Hordeum vulgare) under-sown with Italian ryegrass (Lolium perenne). Each ley was a mixture of four grass species (Lolium perenne, Festuca pratensis, Phleum pratense, Poa pratensis), exposed to three to four cuts annually. Only mineral fertilizers were applied (225 kg N ha-1 yr-1). The yield of barley was tested at six rates of N fertilizer (0 to 150 kg N ha-1). The...

Root biomass and carbon storage in differently managed multispecies temporary grasslands Organic Eprints
Eriksen, J.; Mortensen, T.; Søegaard, K..
Species-rich grasslands may potentially increase carbon (C) storage in soil and an experiment was established to investigate C storage in highly productive temporary multi-species grasslands. Plots were established with three mixtures: 1) a herb mixture containing salad burnet (Sanguisorba minor L.), fenugreek (Trogonella foenum-gruecum), chicory (Chicorium intybus L.), caraway (Carum carvi L.), birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus L.), chervil (Anthriscus cerefolium L.), plantain (Plantago lanceolata L.), lucerne (Medicago sativa L.) and melilot (Melilotus officinalis), 2) 50% of the herb mixture and 50% of a white clover (Trifolium repens L.)/perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) mixture, and 3) 5% of the herb mixture and 95% of the white...

Herbs in high producing organic grasslands – effect of management Organic Eprints
Søegaard, K.; Eriksen, J.; Askegaard, M..
In many organic grasslands herbs are established due to their expected beneficial properties for nutritive value and biodiversity. However, knowledge about grassland herbs is limited. Three mixtures were therefore established at different grazing/cutting and fertilization managements to examine the growth potential and feeding value. The competitiveness of the different species varied greatly. Chicory, plantain and caraway were competitive in mixtures with traditional grassland species. Lotus and salad burnet were weak competitors and chervil and sainfoin were very weak. The feeding value was also highly variable. Caraway had high digestibility of organic matter, also compared with the traditional grassland species, whereas plantain and salad burnet had...

Organic manures as sources of fertiliser sulphur Organic Eprints
Eriksen, J..
On a global scale, S excretion from domestic animals may be estimated to around 8 million t per year, corresponding to 80% of the World S consumption for mineral fertiliser manufacture. The utilisation of this potential source of fertiliser-S is discussed focusing on the use of manure from housing and manure storages applied to agricultural land. Especially in the developed countries the S content of manure collected from cattle and pigs (1 million t S per year) has a potential as S-fertiliser, as legal demands on the utilisation of manure N and/or P already require the use of animal wastes as fertilisers. Content and composition of manure-S from both monogastrics and ruminants may be extremely variable, depending on the S content of the feed. If the diet...

Anaerobic co-digestion of grass and forbs – Influence of cattle manure or grass based inoculum Organic Eprints
Cong, W.-F.; Moset, V.; Feng, L.; Møller, H.B.; Eriksen, J..
Anaerobic co-digestion of agricultural by-products or wastes with complementarity characteristics is commonly used to enhance methane yield. This study firstly explores the possibility of co-digesting grass and forb species (white clover, chicory and plantain) differing in nutrient composition in enhancing methane yield. This was examined with two inocula (a cattle manure-based inoculum and a grass-based inoculum) in a batch assay. Results showed that co-digesting grass and forbs synergistically enhanced methane yield potential on average by 31 L kg−1 volatile solids (+11%) and reduced lag phase time by 0.8 day in the grass-based inoculum, but not in the cattle manure-based inoculum. Mixtures containing plantain showed more consistent synergistic effect...

15Nitrogen transfer from legumes to neighbouring plants in multi-species grassland Organic Eprints
Pirhofer-Walzl, K.; Høgh-Jensen, H.; Rasmussen, J.; Rasmussen, J.; Søegaard, K.; Eriksen, J..
This study investigates the N transfer from legumes to neighbouring plants, grasses, legumes and herbs in a temperate grassland. In a field experiment white clover (Trifolium repens), red clover (Trifolium pratense) and lucerne (Medicago sativa) were leaf-labelled with 15N enriched urea. The 15N tracer was measured in above-ground plant tissue of eight neighbouring plants in two subsequent harvests in 2008. The three legumes donated 15N to all neighbouring plants, of which grasses, white and red clover were strong receivers. Results show that N transfer increases with N application and from the 1st to the 2nd cut.

Hvordan undgås svovlmangel i økologiske sædskifter Organic Eprints
Eriksen, J..

Management affects nitrate leaching from organic farms Organic Eprints
Askegaard, Margrethe; Eriksen, J..
Management decisions significantly affect nitrate-N leaching (N-leaching) from comparable organic fields. The main concern is field management during autumn and themanagement of grass leys. After ploughing-in fertility building crops, like grass-clover leys, effective catch crops are important during autumn and winter for at least two years on sandy soils. On farms with grazing animals the occurrence of “hot spots” should be avoided. These hot spots develop with uneven concentrations of animal manure combined with limited N-uptake in the ley. Management measures to minimize N-leachingmay conflicts with the farmers aim to produce high quality feed and/or to combat yield limiting perennial weeds. It may also conflict with the organic regulations for the...

Effecs of including forbs on N2-fixation and N yield in red clover-ryegrass mixtures Organic Eprints
Dhamala, N.R.; Rasmussen, J.; Carlsson, G; Søegaard, K.; Eriksen, J..
Background: Legume biological nitrogen (N2)-fixation is stimulated by neighboring non-fixing species, but studies of legume N2-fixation in temporary grasslands including non-leguminous forage herb (forb) species are rare. Methodology: We investigated N2-fixation and N yield in a range of species mixtures consisting of three forb species  chicory (Cichorium intybus L.), ribwort plantain (Plantago lanceolata L.) and caraway (Carum carvi L.)  mixed into a traditional perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) and red clover(Trifolium pratense L.) mixture at two fertilisation levels. Results: The percentage of red clover N derived from the atmosphere (%Ndfa) was higher in mixtures than in pure stand, but did not increase with inclusion of forbs. Red clover...

Breeding forb species for intensively managed multi-species mixtures Organic Eprints
Cong, W.-F.; Meyer, V.; Klitgaard, G.; Grønbæk, O.; Eriksen, J..
Adding certain forbs such as chicory (Cichorium intybus L.), caraway (Carum carvi L.) or plantain (Plantago lanceolata L.) to grass-clover mixtures can further enhance or largely maintain the high productivity of grass-clover mixtures (Cong et al., 2018). This study aimed to screen varieties of three competitive forbs - chicory, caraway and plantain with high yield and quality performance, and to examine whether these varieties perform well when grown with traditional grass-clover mixtures.

Biomass production and N2-fixation in seven grass-legume mixtures Organic Eprints
Rasmussen, J.; Søegaard, K.; Eriksen, J..
Inclusion of forage legumes in low-input grassland mixtures improves biomass production and soil fertility trough addition of nitrogen (N) from N2-fixation. The impacts of different mixture of legumes and companion grasses on the N production of the forage mixture have rarely been investigated under comparable soil and climatic conditions. We conducted a field experiment on a sandy soil at two nitrogen levels with seven two-species grassland mixtures: alfalfa (Medicago sativa), bird’s-foot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus), red clover (Trifolium pratense), or white clover (Trifolium repens) in mixture with perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne), and white clover in mixture with meadow fescue (Festuca pratensis), timothy (Phleum pratense), or hybrid ryegrass...

Integrated nitrogen input systems in Denmark Organic Eprints
Olesen, J.E.; Sørensen, P.; Thomsen, I.K.; Eriksen, J.; Thomsen, A.G.; Berntsen, J..
Cycling of N in agriculture through the use of mineral fertilizers, manures and N-fixing crops gives rise to many forms of N emissions to the environment, including nitrate (NO3) leaching, ammonia (NH3) volatilization and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions, resulting in ground water pollution, eutrophication of surface waters, soil acidification and contributions to global warming. The high rates of N input in intensive North European agricultural systems have given rise to high loss rates, and the focus in Danish agriculture during the past two decades has been on increasing the N use efficiency with the aim of reducing losses. The N use efficiency at the system level can be increased by improved handling of manure, targeted application of fertilizers and...
