ABSTRACT Variation in the physicochemical conditions of the sea can influence the distribution and abundance of seabirds by affecting the trophic structure of the pelagic environment. For this reason, we aimed to evaluate the association between the abundance of three developmental stages (chicks, juveniles, and adults) of the Brown Booby (Sula leucogaster etesiaca) and the sea surface temperature (SST) and its thermal anomaly (ANOM) in Gorgona Island, Colombian Pacific. These trends were assessed by performing cross-correlations and generalized linear models. Each developmental stage showed a different abundance tendence linked to SST and ANOM variation. Bird observations were made during five days between 2004 and 2006 on Isla Fuerte and Isla Tortuguilla, two continental shelf islands of the Colombian Caribbean coast. On both sites 83 species were recorded. Isla Fuerte is larger and has a more complex array of habitats, supporting a larger and more complete bird community. Noteworthy species and aspects on the conservation of these insular environments are discussed. El conocimiento de la distribución geográfica de las aves en el Caribe colombiano tiene grandes vacíos de información. Algunos de los ambientes menos estudiados y de mayor importancia por su alta riqueza de aves son los humedales costeros. Desde 1998 se vienen realizando inventarios y monitoreo de las poblaciones de aves de la parte baja del río Sinú. Hasta julio de 2005 se han registrado 296 especies de aves, de las cuales 41 son nuevos registros para esta parte del Caribe, y para ocho especies migratorias se adicionan nuevas localidades de invernada. Se comprobó la reproducción de 98 especies en el área. Tres especies se encuentran en alguna categoría de amenaza a nivel nacional y seis tienen distribución restringida.
