Seasonal abundance and vertical distributions of macroplankton and micronekton in the Northwestern Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer
Sardou, J; Etienne, M; Andersen, V.
Based on monthly samplings over an entire year, variations of abundance, vertical distributions and diel vertical migrations are described in the 0-1000 m water column in a coastal area of the Northwestern Mediterranean Sea for the main pelagic invertebrates. Detailed results are given for 21 species of macrozooplankton and micronekton. On an annual basis, the most numerous species by numbers comprised the euphausiid Meganyctiphanes norvegica, the pteropod Cavolinia inflexa, the siphonophores Abylopsis tetragona and Chelophyes appendiculata, the crustacean decapods Sergestes arcticus and Pasiphaea sivado, and the salps Salpa fusiformis and Thalia democratica. Species of the same genus, such as Sergestes arcticus, S. corniculum and S. robustus or Pasiphaea...

Long-term fluctuations of Liriope tetraphylla in Villefranche bay between 1966 and 1993 compared to Pelagia noctiluca populations ArchiMer
Buecher, E; Goy, J; Planque, Benjamin; Etienne, M; Dallot, S.
Fluctuations in the abundance of developmental stages and adults of the medusa Liriope tetraphylla were monitored from 1966 to 1993 in the bay of Villefranche-sur-Mer, Northwestern Mediterranean Sea. L. tetraphylla exhibited large interannual variations in both mean abundance level and seasonality, Cluster analysis was applied to classify as ''poor'', years with medium to scarce populations evenly distributed the year; as ''normal'', years with a population maximum during autumn as frequently observed in the Mediterranean; and as ''special'', years with strong population maxima localized in spring or summer. The changing jellyfish abundance levels appeared not to be reliably linked to long-term changes in sea water temperature and salinity, even if...

Diurnal mesoscale patterns of 50-khz scattering layers across the ligurian sea front (NW mediterranean-sea) ArchiMer
Baussant, T; Ibanez, F; Dallot, S; Etienne, M.
Between March and June 1988, a series of diurnal acoustic records was carried out using a 50 kHz echosounder on a transect crossing the density front of the Ligurian Sea, off Villefranche-sur-Mer (Mediterranean Sea). The depth, thickness and pattern of the sound scattering layers were studied with respect to physical (temperature, salinity and density) and biological (chlorophyll a) measurements made along the acoustic transect. Seasonal differences were observed. A surface scattering layer (SSL), from 0 to 100 m, and a main deep scattering layer (MDSL), located between 250 and 550 m, occurred permanently during the study. In spring, an intermediate scattering layer (ISL), about 50 m thick, occurred between the SSL and the MDSL. The ISL, a permanent...

A co-modelling process of social and natural dynamics on the isle of Ouessant: Sheep, turf and bikes ArchiMer
Rouan, Mathias; Kerbiriou, Christian; Levrel, Harold; Etienne, M.
An interdisciplinary team has applied the multi-agent system formalism to study shrub encroachment in the Biosphere Reserve on the isle of Ouessant. The main goals were (1) to understand vegetation dynamics, and (2) to represent how main agents, or actors view the dynamics of natural resources in relation to their own living practices. The management strategies established for each type of stakeholders were formalised and the impact of these strategies on biodiversity was analyzed at various temporal and spatial scales. Following a short description of the model, three aspects of the modelling process are discussed in more detail: the use of the chough (Pyrrhocorax pyrrhocorax) population as a representative variable for the interactions between...
