ABSTRACT Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) is a euryhaline species which, in marine systems, can provide animal protein where fresh water is scarce. As a result, adequate water management to maintain sustainability is essential, and the use of a salt water recirculating system would be an advantage at the present time. In addition, Arthrospira platensis is used in the diet of aquatic organisms, as it is rich in protein. The aim of this study, therefore, was to evaluate the use of A. platensis as a food supplement in the performance of Nile tilapia in a salt water recirculating system. ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate different levels of dietary supplementation with dried Arthrospira platensis meal during the breeding season of the tambatinga hybrid, using zootechnical performance, haematological parameters and percent composition of the fillet, and by measuring the parameters of water quality. Experimental breeding lasted 64 days. The fry, with an initial weight of 3.56 ± 0.02 g, received diets with two levels of supplementation (20 and 40%) and one control (commercial feed, without the addition of A. platensis meal). The water quality parameters over safe limits were total ammonia (NH3), nitrite (NO2-), and nitrate (NO3-), which increased as the level of supplementation increased, but did not cause any mortalities. ABSTRACT Each year, the amount of fish produced around the world increases, which contributes to several environmental impacts such as the disposal of effluents without treatment in the environment. This scientific work had as main objective the development of Spirulina platensis in fish effluents, a low cost medium for the production of biomass, in order to reduce the levels of some inorganic nutrients to reach the allowed parameters by the Brazilian environmental standards for effluent disposal and to enable reuse of the water. Teores de β-caroteno em suplementos e biomassa de Spirulina Ciência e Agrotecnologia

A cianobactéria Spirulina tem sido utilizada há séculos, tendo em vista suas propriedades nutricionais e medicinais. Neste trabalho, objetivou-se analisar os teores de β-caroteno tanto em suplementos alimentares a base de Spirulina comercializados em estabelecimentos de produtos naturais no mercado varejista, quanto em S. platensis cultivada em laboratório. Alguns pigmentos carotenóides possuem atividade de vitamina A e, dentre eles, o β-caroteno é o que apresenta maior atividade biológica. A extração de β-caroteno foi feita com metanol:água (90:10 v/v), seguida de saponificação e partição em n-hexano.
