Mandibular Foramen Location and Lingula Height in Dentate Dry Mandibles, and its Relationship With Cephalic Index International Journal of Morphology
Fernandes,Atson Carlos de Souza; Loureiro,Raquel Pimentel; Oliveira,Leonardo; de Moraes,Márcio.
The mandibular foramen and its lingula is a major landmark when administering anesthetic or performing surgical procedures. The objective of this study was to determine whether the topological features of the mandibular foramen (MF) and lingula varied in mandibles from skulls of different cephalic indexes. The location of the mandibular foramen referred to the longitudinal borders of the mandibular ramus (MR), height of the foramen (Hf) referred to the occlusal line of the second molar, and the height of the lingula (Hl) were determined in a total of one hundred and five dry mandibles from skulls identified as dolicho- meso- and brachycephalic. On average MF in brachycephalic mandibles was closest to the anterior border of MR. Hf in brachy-, meso- and...

Parotid Gland with Double Duct: An Anatomic Variation Description International Journal of Morphology
Fernandes,Atson Carlos de Souza; Lima,Rafael Guimarães; Rossi,Marcelle Alvarez; Aguiar,Márcio Cajazeira.
The parotid is the largest salivary gland in humans producing an essentially serous secretion, which normally reaches the oral cavity through a sole duct (the parotid duct) after the latter making its way through the buccinator muscle to reach the mucosa lining the mouth at the level of the cheek. The present study reports on a rare case of double parotid duct found during the dissection the right side of the face of a cadaver of a 46-year-old male individual. The superior (Dl) and inferior (D2) ducts were 26.49 mm and 37.25 mm long, respectively. Based on the diameter of both ducts (Dl and D2) taken in the posterior (3.05 mm and 2.84 mm, respectively) and mid (2.84 mm and 2.68 mm, respectively) thirds, as well as on the histological findings, both ducts...

Potential Donor Sites of the Parietal for Bone Grafting and its Relationship to the Cephalic Index International Journal of Morphology
Fernandes,Atson Carlos de Souza; Costa,Raquel Strauch; Moraes,Márcio de.
The purpose of the present study was to chart the thickness of the parietal bone and establish its relationship with the cephalic index and sex aiming at improving current knowledge and guidance for obtaining calvarial bone auto-graft material. Both left and right parietal bones of 150 skulls of adult human cadavers classified as either dolicho-, meso-, or brachicephalic, and as either male or female had their thickness measured at 3 levels superior (S), middle (M) and inferior (I) and at 3 points anterior (a), middle (m) and posterior (p) in each level, all evenly laid out. No relevant differences in thickness whether comparing sex or cephalic index was evidenced. The thickest measurements were found at points located at superior and middle levels...

The Accessory Soleus Muscle: Case Report and a Review of the Literature International Journal of Morphology
Reis,Francisco Prado; Aragão,José Aderval; Fernandes,Atson Carlos de Souza; Feitosa,Vera Lucia Corrêa; Fakhouri,Ricardo; Nunes,Marco Antonio Prado.
An accessory soleus muscle was found in the left leg of a male cadaver in the dissecting room. The muscle was situaded posteromedially, between the soleus muscle and the flexor digitorum longus and flexor hallucis longus. The origin of the muscle was in the superior third of the anterior fascia of the soleus muscle and the insertion, was attached with separate tendon, in the anteromedial surface of calcaneus bone
