Evolutionary analysis of apolipoprotein E by Maximum Likelihood and complex network methods Genet. Mol. Biol.
Benevides,Leandro de Jesus; Carvalho,Daniel Santana de; Andrade,Roberto Fernandes Silva; Bomfim,Gilberto Cafezeiro; Fernandes,Flora Maria de Campos.
Abstract Apolipoprotein E (apo E) is a human glycoprotein with 299 amino acids, and it is a major component of very low density lipoproteins (VLDL) and a group of high-density lipoproteins (HDL). Phylogenetic studies are important to clarify how various apo E proteins are related in groups of organisms and whether they evolved from a common ancestor. Here, we aimed at performing a phylogenetic study on apo E carrying organisms. We employed a classical and robust method, such as Maximum Likelihood (ML), and compared the results using a more recent approach based on complex networks. Thirty-two apo E amino acid sequences were downloaded from NCBI. A clear separation could be observed among three major groups: mammals, fish and amphibians. The results...

Scarcelli,Eliana; Piatti,Rosa Maria; Harakava,Ricardo; Miyashiro,Simone; Fernandes,Flora Maria de Campos; Campos,Fabíola Ribeiro; Francisco,Waldemar; Genovez,Margareth Élide; Richtzenhain,Leonardo José.
The objective of the present trial was to characterize genetically strains of Campylobacter jejuni subsp. jejuni isolated from humans and several animal sources (bovines, swine, dogs, primates, wild boars and poultry). A total of 828 different animal samples (feces, carcass, aborted fetus and hysterectomized uterus) were analysed by means of routine bacteriological methods, and 36 C. jejuni strains were isolated. Thirty strains of human fecal origin were obtained in clinical analysis laboratories in the city of São Paulo. The 66 C. jejuni strains isolated were submitted to genetic characterization. Primers based on fla A gene were used in a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and amplified a fragment of the 702 bp. PCR products were evaluated by means of...
