Growth curves of meat-producing mammals by von Bertalanffy’s model PAB
Fernandes,Felipe Augusto; Fernandes,Tales Jesus; Pereira,Adriele Aparecida; Meirelles,Sarah Laguna Conceição; Costa,Adriano Carvalho.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate how the parameterization and the application of different allometric values affect the obtention of the most adequate fit of von Bertalanffy’s model, in the description of the growth curve of meat-producing mammals (bovine, pigs, rabbits, and sheep). Among the nonlinear models, von Bertalanffy’s has been very often applied in several areas, with different parameterizations. This model has been commonly used with an allometric value of m = 2/3; however, for mammals, it is believed that this value can be m = 3/4. The analyzed data referring to the mass of meat-producing mammals according to their age were obtained from research institutions and from the literature. The results showed that von Bertalanffy’s...

Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the development of the morphometric characteristics of Mangalarga Marchador horses through nonlinear models. The transversal method was used to collect data on height at the withers (HW), body length (BL), and thoracic (TP) and cannon (CP) perimeters from 200 horses (75 males and 125 non-pregnant females), aged between 6 and 153 months. The parameters of the Brody, Gompertz, logistic, and von Bertalanffy nonlinear models were estimated using the R software. Models were compared and selected using the coefficient of determination, the residual standard deviation, and the corrected Akaike information criterion. For adult females, HW, BL, TP, and CP ranged between 146.45-148.34, 148.59-151.64,...

Evaluation of the critical points of the most adequate nonlinear model in adjusting growth data of ‘green dwarf’ coconut fruits Rev. Bras. Frutic.
Silva,Édipo Menezes da; Fruhauf,Ariana Campos; Silva,Edilson Marcelino; Muniz,Joel Augusto; Fernandes,Tales Jesus; Silva,Victor Ferreira da.
Abstract ‘Green Dwarf’ coconut is a fruit of great economic interest, since all its components are used, in addition to water, its main component. It is a culture of humid tropics, widely produced in northeastern Brazil, being an important income source for the region. The phenology study of this type of fruit is extremely important, but there are few studies in literature. Regression models, especially nonlinear growth models, can be of great value to understand how fruit growth behaves. The scarcity of works of this nature may be linked to some difficulties in estimating parameters of nonlinear models, such as assigning initial values to the itterative process. Overcoming this difficulty, for regression analysis, linear or not, several steps need to be...

Furtado,Thais Destefani Ribeiro; Muniz,Joel Augusto; Silva,Edilson Marcelino; Frühauf,Ariana Campos; Fernandes,Tales Jesus.
Abstract Banana is among fruits most planted in tropical countries and belongs to the fruit group most consumed in the world; however, banana needs proper conservation techniques. The aim of this study was to describe the drying kinetics of ‘Prata’ and ‘D’água’ banana cultivars at temperatures of 40 and 70°C, comparing the Henderson, STPE, Lewis, Page and Fick regression models, estimating the Absolute Drying Rate (ADR). Parameters were estimated with R and SAS Studio softwares, using for comparison and selection models of the R²aj, RSD and corrected Akaike Information Criteria. The Page and Fick models did not adjust, and the others presented good adjustment to data. The Henderson model was the most suitable to describe data of ‘Prata’ banana at both...

Description of blackberry fruit growth by nonlinear regression models Rev. Bras. Frutic.
Silva,Édipo Menezes da; Tadeu,Maraísa Hellen; Silva,Victor Ferreira da; Pio,Rafael; Fernandes,Tales Jesus; Muniz,Joel Augusto.
Abstract Blackberry is a small fruit with several properties beneficial to human health and its cultivation is an alternative for small producers due to its fast and high financial return. Studying the growth of fruits over time is extremely important to understand their development, helping in the most appropriate crop management, avoiding post-harvest losses, which is one of the aggravating factors of blackberry cultivation, being a short shelf life fruit. Thus, growth curves are highlighted in this type of study and modeling through statistical models helps understanding how such growth occurs. Data from this study were obtained from an experiment conducted at the Federal University of Lavras in 2015. The aim of this study was to adjust nonlinear,...

Souza,Felipe Amorim Caetano de; Muniz,Joel Augusto; Fernandes,Tales Jesus; Cunha,Fabiana Oliveira; Meirelles,Sarah Laguna Conceição; Souza,José Camisão de; Moura,Raquel Silva de.
ABSTRACT The objective was to evaluate the accuracy of six body weight (BW) estimating methods in Mangalarga Marchador horses (MM) (n = 318): method A - tape placements at three different positions around the thoracic girth; B - Crevat and Quetelec's formula; C - Hall's formula; D - Hintz and Griffiths’ table; E - Santos’ table; and F - Cintra's formula. For additional analyses, gender, age, and gestational stage were considered. Estimated average BW was compared to the actual scale weight by the paired T test, mean predicted error, and determination coefficient. In the general population, methods A (position 3), B, and C estimated BW that were different from that of the scale. Method A, at positions 1 and 2, was more accurate in predicting the scale...

Study on the growth curve of the internal cavity of ‘Dwarf green’ coconut fruits Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Prado,Thalita Kelen Leal do; Savian,Taciana Villela; Fernandes,Tales Jesus; Muniz,Joel Augusto.
ABSTRACT The aim of the work was to evaluate the adjustment of the logistic and gompertz model with structure of first-order autoregressive errors in the study on the ‘Dwarf green’ coconut fruit growth based on longitudinal and cross-sectional internal cavity diameter data (DLCI and DTCI). Model adjustments showed positive residual autocorrelation, according to the Durbin-Watson test and for both variables, DLCI and DTCI, the residue was modeled according to first-order autoregressive process (AR1). The analysis was performed using the least squares method in the PROC MODEL of the SAS software and results indicated that for both characteristics under study, the logistic model was the most appropriate in describing fruit growth and, according to the model,...

Double sigmoidal models describing the growth of coffee berries Ciência Rural
Fernandes,Tales Jesus; Pereira,Adriele Aparecida; Muniz,Joel Augusto.
ABSTRACT: This study aimed to verify if the growth pattern of coffee berries, considering fresh mass accumulation over time, is double sigmoid and to select the most suitable nonlinear model to describe such behavior. Data used consisted of fourteen longitudinal observations of average fresh mass of coffee berries obtained in an experiment with the cultivar Obatã IAC 1669-20. The fits provided by the Logistic and Gompertz models were compared in their single and double versions. Parameters were estimated using the least squares method using the Gauss-Newton algorithm implemented in the nls function of the R software. It can be concluded that the growth pattern of the coffee fruit, in fresh mass accumulation, is double sigmoid. The double Gompertz and...

The use of the nonlinear models in the growth of pears of ‘Shinseiki’ cultivar Ciência Rural
Ribeiro,Thais Destefani; Savian,Taciana Villela; Fernandes,Tales Jesus; Muniz,Joel Augusto.
ABSTRACT: The goal of this study was to elucidate the growth and development of the Asian pear fruit, on the grounds of length, diameter and fresh weight determined over time, using the non-linear Gompertz and Logistic models. The specifications of the models were assessed utilizing the R statistical software, via the least squares method and iterative Gauss-Newton process (DRAPER & SMITH, 2014). The residual standard deviation, adjusted coefficient of determination and the Akaike information criterion were used to compare the models. The residual correlations, observed in the data for length and diameter, were modeled using the second-order regression process to render the residuals independent. The logistic model was highly suitable in demonstrating...

Temperature and light intensity interaction on Cercospora coffeicola sporulation and conidia germination Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Silva,Marília Goulart da; Pozza,Edson Ampélio; Lima,Caio Vitor Rodrigues Vaz de; Fernandes,Tales Jesus.
ABSTRACT Difficulty in obtaining abundant sporulation in culture of many species of Cercospora may be the limiting factor for studies of biology, systematics, and inoculation of the genus. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the nutritional and environmental requirements that influence mycelial growth, sporulation and germination. As it is difficult to obtain conidia of Cercospora coffeicola in vitro, different temperatures (17, 22, 27, and 32 °C) and light intensities (80, 160, 240, and 320 μmol m-2 s-1) were evaluated to optimize pathogen sporulation and assess favorable conditions for spore germination, aiming for a strategy of disease control. The dark treatment (0 μmol m-2 s-1) was added for sporulation. A significant interaction was found...
