Thirteen winter wheat composite cross populations originating from one population but with differing histories over six years and three reference varieties were compared for yield, disease occurrence, as well as phenotypic diversity. The populations performed similarly and often better than the reference varieties in terms of yield and had lower incidence of disease. The populations are also phenotypically diverse and differ among each other, indicating that they have maintained a high degree of diversity over time and in varying locations, but most likely also diverged from each other. |

Unpredictable climatic conditions and increasing pressure on non-renewable resources mean that alternative agricultural systems able to cope with increasing biotic and abiotic stresses, as well as external input costs, are needed. Sustainable agricultural systems should be self-regulating, characterized by a high degree of interand intra-specific diversity (Moreau 2010). Evolutionary breeding through the introduction of Composite Cross Populations (CCPs) increases intra-specific diversity, enabling CCPs to adapt to changing environmental conditions. Increasing interspecific diversity, through mixed cropping, also plays an important role in sustainable systems and suitable crops are needed that are able to cope with the increasing interspecific competition... |

Resistance of tomato fruits to Phytophthora infestans Late blight, caused by Phytophthora infestans (Mont) de Bary, is one of the important diseases in organic potato and tomato production. While some information on foliar disease resistance of tomatoes is available, virtually no information exists on the relation of leaf to fruit resistance. The central parameters of the infection chain, incubation and latency period were determined for 40 tomato varieties using three isolates of P. infestans. A total of 2858 fruits were drop inoculated in the lab and assessed daily for symptoms or sporulation for 16 days. There were significant variety by isolate interactions for incubation period, latency period and the interim time suggesting race specific... |

Foot rot is an important limiting factor in pea production in Germany (Pflughöft, 2008). The disease is caused by a pathogen complex consisting of Ascochyta complex pathogens (Mycospharella pinodes, Phoma medicaginis and Ascochyta pisi) and Fusarium spp. However, little is known about the specificity of single pathogens of the complex and their impact on plant performance. In order to address this problem pot experiments with five isolates each of Fusarium solani f.sp pisi, Fusarium avenaceum and Mycosphaerella pinodes were carried out in controlled conditions. Three weeks after sowing and inoculation disease symptoms were assessed and plant growth parameters measured. All pathogens caused root discoloration and development of disease symptoms on pea... |

An improved Decisions Support System (DSS) for the control of Phytopththora infestans in organic potatoes was developed in the frame of the CoFree Project. This work included as primary steps the development of an ontogenetic model (Simonto) based on the BBCH scale of potatoes, and its validation. Additionally, the soil mineral nitrogen dynamics in organic potatoes and nitrogen contents of tuber and leaves were modelled and integrated in the existing DSS Öko-SIMPHYT (www.isip.de). The DSS comprises a correction tool at BBCH 60 for the user to improve the quality of the prediction of potato growth and a termination of copper spraying when potential yield of 90 % is reached. This development was based on intensive data mining in existing data sets from... |

Plant parasitic nematodes may cause massive yield reductions in organic farming. Long rotations, often high amounts of weeds and a high frequency of legumes favour parasitic nematodes with a broad host range such as Meloidogyne spp. und Pratylenchus spp. The EU- Projekt OSCAR (Optimizing Subsidiary Crop Applications in Rotations) aims at improving soil conservation through minimum tillage combined with living mulches, cover crops and the use of suppressive composts. An experiment was set up with a rotation of 2-year grass-clover mix followed by wheat and then potatoes. Experimental factors were tillage, cover crops, and compost application. Until now Nematodes were sampled before and after wheat and before potatoes. Population dynamics over time were more... |

There is widespread concern over the damage caused by modern agriculture to soil structure and the ecosystem services provided. One approach to overcome this problem is conservation agriculture (CA) which aims to maintain soil structure by minimising soil disturbance, maximising soil cover and using crop rotation. However, despite recent legislation supporting minimum tillage and direct seeding, together with the efforts of pioneer farmers, CA is still practised on less than 4% of the agricultural land in Europe. This underlines the need for major improvements in the approach together with consolidation of, and access to, information about alternative cropping methods and their biological and economic value and performance. A new European FP7-funded... |

Soil properties at the beginning of the MEE (Multi Environment Experiments) were statistically analyzed in order to verify the field homogeneity. The initial soil properties represent the starting point to interpret the effect of CC and LM on soil fertility during crop cycle.Soil properties of the fields were quite homogeneous at the beginning of crop cycles (first and second). The soil properties of the experimental fields in the selected areas showed a wide variety of pedons to be used for the comparison of CC and LM effect in different climate zones. Soils from the Northern European sites are more acid and richer of nutrients and organic matter with respect to the soils in Southern sites. |

Introduction In order to be able to adapt to changing environmental conditions, crop plants need a certain degree of diversity (Stevens 1942, Finckh 2008). The development of genetically diverse populations (composite cross populations, CCPs) instead of breeding entirely homogeneous pure line varieties by standard pedigree breeding methods is a strategy that aims at creating flexible varieties. Material and Methods Three winter wheat CCPs from the UK based on 20 modern wheat varieties (A) or a subset of either 12 high quality varieties (Q) or 9 high yielding parents (Y) were used. Since the F5 the CCPs have been grown under organic (O) and conventional (C) conditions in two parallel sets at the University of Kassel without artificial selection... |
