Featuring innovation could be simpleness in the field application, allowing to account in the best of natural conditions. The new technologies increasing production are usually subordinate to climatic, geogaphic and mainly socio-economic conditions wre they are used, therefore they cannot be always directly tranferred to other countries. Another fact could be pointed out : in high productivity areas the innovations are quite unusual ; the influrence of farmers and the routine practices generally restrict the propagation of new ideas and their application ; on the other hand in the new countries or with a starting prodcution the new techniques get the best chances to be transferred. These last fifteen y the use of synthetic stuff has been one of the... |

The Prasinophyceae Tetraselmis suecica Butcher, was cultivated at a density of 2 to 3 million cells per ml and was concentrated with a decanting centrifugal extractor at 1 m3/hr flow. The samples, obtained in the form of a paste, were diluted to 50 x 10(6) cells per ml and mixed with two cryoprotective agents such as glycerol (10, 20, 30%) and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO, 5, 10, 15%), then frozen and stored a t -25 C. After a 1 month period, results by decreasing order of viability areas follows : glycerol, l0%, 20%, DMSO 15%, glycerol 10%, a starting culture of 0.69 x 10(6) cells per ml in 500 ml sea water enriched with Conway stock solution reached 5.49 x 10(6) cells per ml culture a t the end of 4 days. The aim of these experiments was to obtain a good... |

The Pacific Mani la clam (Tapes philippinamm) was introduccd in France be tween 1972 and 1975 by the SATMAR Corporation , and in England through the Conwy Laboratory in 1980. Initially. spat were introduced and later adults, both from the west coast of North America (Puget Sound area). Aquaculture production in France started from adults. Until 1975, experiments with the spat were conducted at half-industrial scale and research activities and plans to transfer the knowledge were set up. The breeding began at first on the French Atlantic coast in intertidal areas and at the same time in oyster ponds. Characteristics of the new cu lture are presented in th is paper. The diseases met wilh in larval production and growout are also discussed . Nalural... |

Introduction: Through the combined works of research, local communities and professionals, a new activity has been created, "vénériculture", i.e. clam farming. Thanks to the knowledge acquired in research as well as production in the shellfish field, clam production results followed shortly thereafter. Rightly so, only 10 years have elapsed since the beginning of the research and the actual production phase (500 t) involving about 300 professionals. Research conducted by IFREMER positively contributes to the creation of new trades as well as diversity within existing professions. Clams are marketed nationally as well as exported. French producers are truly competent, but the prospect of open borders and increasing competition requires maintaining a high... |

Innovations in the nursery culture and maturation of bivalves are being worked on at aIl levels of research and production, but transfer to the development stage must be effected differently in each case. Over the past twenty years, there have been a great many innovations in bivalve rearing, most of which may be described in terms of rearing conditions: higher and lower densities; confined or open environemnt; overflow; upwelling; floating, suspended, raised or ground systems, etc. The quality of an innovation is characterized by its influence on the efficient operation of the specific culture program and by how easily it may be transferred. |

The experimental hatchery of Argenton (Brittany, France), is described in details. The rearing techniques corresponding to each stage of Haliotis tuberculata are discribed: tanks without collectors, 20-day controlled production of algae, then artificial feeding until the third month and normal rearing with chopped natural red algae. The evolution of growth, mortality and juvenile production per tank are detailed per year. [NOT CONTROLLED OCR] |

The start of the mollusc, crustacean and fish artificial production programs required the creation of a room producing 300 litres of algal culture daily over 6 days, but able to reach 400 litres 3 days a week. The cultures are monospecific; 98 % of the produced algae are Prasinophyceae, Tetraselmis suecica Butcher (Parke and Dixon, 1964), a green flagellate alga measuring eight to ten [ ?] at its longest length. |

In order to determine the best strategy for manilla clam rearing, twenty seven batches of the species Rudilapes philippinarum (Adams, Reeve, 1850) were reared under various technical conditions, over periods of up to two and-a-half years. The numerous data conceming the length growth (sampling was donc every one-and-a-half months) allowed us to quantify, by means of the parameters appearing in a seasonaly modulated von Bertalanffy growth curve, several aspects of the growth process in each balch. Subsequently, on the basis of a stepwise multilinear regression technique, we searched for an ernpirical relation between the technical characteristics of the various rearing procedures (independent variables) and the previous growth pararneters (dependent... |

Due to the lack of regulation allowing commercial exploitation of abalone (Haliotis tuberculata), French research was directed towards a half extensive aquaculture starting from hatchery juveniles and using the natural production of macrophyte algue of rocky intertidal areas. Spat is produced in the Argenton hatchery (Western Brittany) with an original high density technique (4 000 juveniles of 8 months/m2). About 55 000 juveniles are produced each year and immersed in habitats of 3 types. |

This issue could be tackled from two different point of views: It was indeed possible to turn towards the Japanese techniques (semi-intensive experiments using large volumes superior to one cubic metre, providing immediate results but hardly repeatable, with a need for a large and non-specialized manpower), or to go for the enclosed system with a high controlled production (long implementation, heavier immediate investment, use ,in series, of small volumes with high concentrations, artificially produced natural food provided in known quantities, lower manpower needs but highly specialized). For a better knowledge of the issues raised and an easier future adaptation to the European socio-economic context, considering the knowledge brought by the Anglo-Saxon... |

A national program started in 1989 to drive researches on Ruditapes philippinarum brown ring disease correlated with a vibrio called P1. The researches have concerned epidemiological surveys on spats and adults, treatment methods, diagnostic techniques, and anatomical and functional studies about the vibrio-clam relations. The transmissions of the disease appeared mainly related to contaminated manila clam seeds, with secondary horizontal propagation. The brown ring formation appeared to be caused by a periostracum deterioration. Taking into account some of these results, an adapted cultural technique including special care of seeds and decreased densities was proposed to the farmers. |
