Risk Management Strategies for Producer-Owned Peanut Shelling Cooperatives AgEcon
Byrne, Robert J.; Smith, Nathan B.; Fletcher, Stanley M.; Barnett, Barry J..
The 2002 Farm Bill altered the peanut program. Peanut producers have indicated interest in a New Generation Shelling Cooperative (NGSC). This study simulates inherent risks and potential risk management strategies for a NGSC. These strategies are ranked using various metrics to understand their impact on risk and return.

Can Rank-Order Tournaments Improve Efficiency of Quality Differentiated Crop Markets Under Marketing Loan Program Operation? The Case of U.S. Peanuts. AgEcon
Nadolnyak, Denis A.; Fletcher, Stanley M.; Revoredo-Giha, Cesar.
In the paper, alternative contractual arrangements between crop producers and processors are evaluated with a view of addressing the major issues present in peanut markets in the U.S., the major EU supplier of high quality peanuts. The issues are the thinness of the spot markets and the absence of quality premiums, both of which impair market efficiency. Results indicate that introducing contracts with a system of quality differentials creates incentives for producer self-selection to participate in the post harvest cash market. Moreover, in the presence of sufficiently high common production risk, tournament contracts are more efficient and preferred by the producers than the standard fixed premium schedules.

A VALUATION OF PUBLIC DEMAND FOR THE PARTICIPATION OF NONGOVERNMENTAL AGENCIES IN MONITORING AND ENFORCING FOOD SAFETY REGULATIONS AgEcon
He, Senhui; Fletcher, Stanley M.; Rimal, Arbindra.
Lack of consumer trust in governmental food safety regulators hinders the promotion of consumer confidence in the safety of their food supply. One possible way to boost consumer trust is to allow nongovernmental agencies to participate in monitoring and enforcing food safety regulations. This study identifies factors affecting consumer desire for the participation of nongovernmental agencies. The information obtained from this study can be used in further valuation of the feasibility of the participation of nongovernmental agencies.

THE EFFECTS OF IRRATIONAL RESPONSES IN CONTINGENT VALUATION SURVEY AND THE APPROPRIATE TREATMENT AgEcon
He, Senhui; Fletcher, Stanley M.; Rimal, Arbindra.
This paper investigates the effects of irrational responses on stated willingness-to-pay (WTP) in a contingent valuation study. A significant portion of the respondents stated that they were willing to pay a higher price for irradiated beef which they would avoid consuming due to their concerns about the side effects of irradiation. Such responses may not reflect true WTP and may cause bias in WTP estimate. Excluding these responses from estimation may result in sample selection bias. Whereas setting the bid values presented to these responses close to zero both helped to improve the estimation model and to reduce the potential bias in WTP estimate.

VARIETAL SALES AND QUALITY DIFFERENTIATION: THE CASE OF CERTIFIED SOYBEAN SEED IN THE SOUTHEASTERN U.S. AgEcon
Houston, Jack E.; Jeong, Kihong; Fletcher, Stanley M..
Variation in annual soybean plantings contributes to uncertainty in supplies of and demand for soybean seed in the southeastern U.S. This study used an expenditure valuation approach in an hedonic analysis framework to estimate returns to soybean seed quality differentiation. Analysis of pooled cross-sectional and time series observations narrowed important quality characteristics to yield and disease resistance attributes. In general, unexpected environmental factors affect seed crops over time, and the demand for other performance attributes is less predictable than for expected yield attributes. The results also suggest that geographical location is not significantly related to sales of varietal soybean seed in the study area.

INFLUENCE OF PRODUCT ATTRIBUTES AND HOUSEHOLD CHARACTERISTICS ON CONSUMERS' ATTITUDE TOWARD AND PURHCASE PATTERN OF IN-SHELL PEANUTS AgEcon
Rimal, Arbindra; Fletcher, Stanley M..
A nationwide household survey was used to examine U.S. consumers' attitude and purchase behavior toward in-shell peanuts. Fishbein's multiattribute model was the basis for evaluating the effects of perceived product attributes on attitudes toward in-shell peanuts. Consumer purchase behavior was analyzed using a count data model. The results suggest that attitudes toward in-shell peanuts were influenced by attributes such as fat, taste, and healthiness, and that taste was the only attribute influencing consumers' purchase decisions. Consumers who perceived that in-shell peanuts contained undesirable nutritional ingredients, such as fat and cholesterol, developed unfavorable attitudes toward in-shell peanuts. These perceptions translated into reduced...

EXPLAINING PRICE TRANSMISSION ASYMMETRY IN THE US PEANUT MARKETING CHAIN AgEcon
Revoredo-Giha, Cesar; Nadolnyak, Denis A.; Fletcher, Stanley M..
n the paper, we study price transmission from wholesale peanut prices to retail peanut butter prices. Using monthly data since 1984, we show that, while an increase in peanut prices is almost immediately transferred to peanut butter prices, it takes several months for a price decrease to be reflected in the peanut butter prices. Besides, the long term price transmission effect also appears to be symmetric. The observed short and long-term asymmetry is explained as a result of profit maximizing inventory management and/or some degree of market power in peanut processing.

The Effect of the U.S. Foreign Market Development Program on Import Demand for Shelled Peanuts in the European Union AgEcon
Boonsaeng, Tullaya; Fletcher, Stanley M..
The main objective of this research is to evaluate the effectiveness of the U.S. Foreign Market Development (FMD) program on the European Union imported demand for shelled peanuts. We find that the FMD program had a positive effect on the EU demand for U.S. shelled peanuts. This result suggests that the information provided to manufactures through the FMD has helped to maintain U.S. peanuts in the EU markets. The marginal return per EURO dollars of U.S. export promotion expenditures on the FMD program is 277 EURO dollars for U.S. shelled peanuts.

Estimating Vulnerability of U.S. Peanut Producers to Changes in Farm Support AgEcon
Nadolnyak, Denis A.; Fletcher, Stanley M..
In the paper, we make an attempt to estimate the supply of farmer stock peanuts in the Southeastern Region of the U.S. and evaluate production effects of the recent changes in farm support policies and of trade liberalization that have affected prices. The choice of estimation methodology is dictated by the unavailability of suitable time-series data due to heavily regulated nature of the U.S. peanut markets before 2002. Supply estimation is performed by estimating farm-level supply using cross-sectional survey data on farm-level costs and returns. Results show that producers not able to expand peanut acreage are likely to be vulnerable to price reductions, as there might exist economies of scale. Production on dry land is likely to remain unprofitable at...

ON A NAME CHANGE FOR THE JOURNAL AgEcon
Epperson, James E.; Huang, C.I.; Fu, Tsu-Tan; Fletcher, Stanley M..
Membership of the Southern Agricultural Economics Association (SAEA) was polled to ascertain the strength of support for changing the name of the Southern Journal of Agricultural Economics (SJAE) to eliminate the regional connotation. The general view was that a name change is unwarranted. The overall impression of our profession is that the SJAE is a high quality journal and that the name is not the crucial factor in promulgating this image but rather the continued striving for excellence. A number of profiles were developed to show that the ordered-response model may be used in predicting probabilities for those who would or would not likely favor a name change.

European Union Import Demand for In-Shell Peanuts: The Source Differentiated AIDS Model AgEcon
Boonsaeng, Tullaya; Fletcher, Stanley M..
This research estimates import demand elasticities for in-shell peanuts in the European Union from four different sources: China, the United States, South America, and Africa. The null hypothesis of aggregation over product sources is rejected at conventional levels of significance suggesting that peanuts from different sources are differentiated by EU consumers which might attributed to their different quality characteristics. Conditional expenditure elasticities for U.S. in-shell peanuts are larger than expenditure elasticities for Latin American, Chinese and African peanuts.

NUTRITION CONSIDERATIONS IN FOOD SELECTION AgEcon
Rimal, Arbindra; Fletcher, Stanley M.; McWatters, Kay H..
The importance of nutrition consideration to households in food selection is instrumental in the development of information programs to promote public health and to market healthy food. Using a national telephone survey of 2880 U.S. households, this study examines the role and influence of socio-economic characteristics and lifestyle on a household meal planner’s consideration of four dietary components in food selection. Household income, children in households, geographic location, and gender, age, education, and lifestyle of meal planners affected the consideration of dietary components in food selection. The results provide a basis for developing education programs that focus on the particular dietary considerations of identified demographic...

CONSUMPTION OF REDUCED-FAT PEANUT BUTTER IN ADDITION TO THE CONSUMPTION OF REGULAR PEANUT BUTTER AgEcon
He, Senhui; Fletcher, Stanley M.; Rimal, Arbindra.
A set of factors has been identified to affect consumption of reduced-fat peanut butter in addition to regular peanut butter. We found that consumption of reduced-fat peanut butter, which is an imperfect substitute for regular peanut butter, may expand total demand for peanut butter. Interestingly, for those who usually buy the same brand of peanut butter, their consumption of reduced-fat peanut butter is more likely in addition to consumption of regular peanut butter, implying promotion of a specific brand of reduced-fat peanut butter tend to increase total demand for the same brand of peanut butter.
